If you really want to get a sense how grand Alaska is, you need to see it by air. Now of course…read moreyou are just seeing just one small area of a state so large it is bigger than Texas, California, and Montana combined. But when you see tree covered mountains for as far as the eye can see, and huge lakes spilling into other lakes below, it's humbling. Ketchikan was our first stop on our cruise ship, and we booked Misty Fjords Air directly through the company rather than the cruise ship. The van picked us up from the cruise ship port area and took us a few minutes away to the runway. Being a seaplane, they pretty much share the same runway as your cruise ship. Taking off and landing on water was incredibly smooth, which makes me wonder why we ever use wheels on a plane at all. After taking in the breath taking views of lakes trapped between mountains, waterfalls, flying high and low between rocky mountains, our pilot landed on a lake in the middle of nowhere. Just a small floating wood pier to tie the plane up to, so we could get out for a few minutes and take in the serenity of nature. Taking off and landing is a big part of the fun, so it was nice to get to do it twice. While in the plane we could ask questions and our pilot was happy to answer as many as he could, along with his narration. For the most part people were just happy to take in the surroundings and it was nice that the pilot allowed us to just enjoy the moment with some background music piped in the headphones. This is a must do excursion if you are on an Alaska cruise, I know it's not cheap, but coming to Alaska without seeing it by air, is like visiting the Sistine Chapel and not looking up.

Since my friend is vegan and the most of the float plane excursions our cruise offered included a seafood feast, it was not an option for us so I did research and found that Carlin prices were fair. Heidi, the owner who picked us up, was very bubbly and friendly. Our pilot, Timber, was very experienced and personable. I'm very happy with the overall experience, and felt it was worth every penny spent. The aerial view was utterly breathtaking, and every second of it was a grand sight to witness! Once we landed, we were allowed to take pictures and immerse ourselves in nature's beauty. My friend and I switched seats on the flight back so that we can experience different views, which was also spectacular. Highly recommend to anyone who is just stopping in Ketchikan for the day!! When we arrived to the fly shop we were given some basic information and then led to the plane with our pilot(Jim) and Brooklyn. Once in the plane we were given clear safety instructions by Jim and off we went. One of our group was a small plane pilot himself and even he stated that he was very impressed with Jim's piloting skills. The flight was smooth and the skies were clear which allowed us all to get beautiful views from all sides of the plane. The scenery was magnificent and the information given in a recorded message by our pilot Jim was very informative. We were able to land in the fiord and I can honestly say that the landing was perfection as you did not even know you touched the water before slowing down to drift! We were able to get out of the plane in water that was 600' deep and sit on the floats. The most peaceful place on earth and scenery that was indescribable. We got a photo op and more information about the history and area before getting back into the plane for the ride back to the dock. We flew through the Misty Fjords and landed on a pristine mountain lake in our float plane. We took off again and flew over snowy mountain tops and saw many, many waterfalls. Although the flight was a little bumpy at times the pilot worked hard to make it as smooth as possible. I started to feel a little queasy so when we landed on the lake the pilot gave me gum to chew since it apparently helps. A miracle, because it worked! Our cruise had canceled our Juneau port and so any helicopter tours there were cancelled, so we were pretty bummed and hoped that Ketchikan would be a little better when it came to getting on a helicopter. My husband booked the flight with the nicest woman over the phone who didn't make us feel pressured in any way. She was super informative and sweet. Our email told us to meet someone from the company near the bronze statue near berth 2, so we waited a few minutes and no one approached us and there wasn't anyone with a sign for the company, so we were a little confused at first. Eventually we were able to find the person picking us up and he was apologetic that he didn't have the sign on him, so no worries there. The tour headquarters is one of the comfiest places I've been, it was so welcoming and everyone is just so nice. We were given a safety demo and Ryan Maehs flew us in one of the cleanest helicopters I've ever seen. Ryan was super knowledgeable and took us to see great wildlife and even landed for about 20 or so minutes while we were able to put our feet in the water and enjoy Alaskan nature away from the crowds. After my husband enjoyed the excursions at the other two stops on the cruise, he asked if we could book something for our day in Ketchikan, hopefully a helicopter tour. So the night before we docked, I looked on Yelp and found Ketchikan Helicopters and explored their website for almost an hour. I emailed Ryan at Ketchikan Helicopters and he responded very quickly with all of the information I needed. When we pulled into port the next morning, I was able to call Ryan and finalize the details for our trip. Ryan made it extremely easy to find him when it came time for the tour. He was so welcoming and reassuring. And he went out of his way to build a rapport with our six-year-old son, who very quickly lost all anxiety about going up in a helicopter for the first time. My husband is retired from the Army and he immediately felt comfortable with the helicopter given it's immaculate condition, which helped me feel more relaxed. (I had never been on a helicopter, so I have no idea what a well-maintained helicopter looks like. My husband on the other hand has been on dozens and dozens of helicopters.) Ryan made sure we experienced everything we asked for with the tour. He was able to take us where we saw five black bears. He sat the helicopter down for 20 minutes and let us explore the terrain ourselves. (This was amazing! It was so beautiful. It gave us our first experience in Alaska where we were far removed from anyone, which is rare for people who tour Alaska by cruise, but is common for backpackers.) It was a long tour and we felt we really got our money's worth for the excursion. We felt safe with Ryan's decades of experience and his well-maintained helicopter. And the landscape he flew us over was breathtaking. Words and photos can't come close to doing it justice. What's really cool is that both my son and my husband say this way the highlight of the trip for them. I think that's a pretty good endorsement, given the six-year-old really enjoyed all Disney was offering on the ship and my husband had a trip to Alaska on his bucket list.. Everything about the helicopter tour was wonderful. It was very easy to book it, even with very short notice. Ryan was not only a skilled pilot, he was also very warm and informative. You can book your tour with confidence.
