After a week of hard skiing, and getting ready for mountaineering trips, I needed someone to really prep my body for life, and Elyse was a godsend. Very rarely do I find someone with the combination of strength and body awareness to really give me the deep pressure and the right bodywork. Basically, I felt like a brand new person after walking out. Real talk - I might actually visit my sister in Atlanta more just so I can come back for an awesome massage. The regular prices are way too high for me. But I figured I would give it a try because it's right by my home. It was my mistake that I arrived a couple minutes late, but I did have a bit of trouble finding the space. When I got there, it looked to be closed. I called the number on my confirmation email twice and got no answer. I was about to leave when Elise walked up and greeted me. She did give me a full hour of massaging anyway, so no complaints there. I definitely should have arrived at least 5 minutes early, though! About the massage. The website indicated that deep tissue would cost more, but it was plenty "deep" and rough, as is. Elise did, of course, ask me to let her know if it was ever too much, but I don't like to give alot of critique during massages; I like to let them do their thing as much as possible. But I did have to speak up when it felt like she was repeatedly kneading a softball into my neck!! Some people may love massages like that, but it was honestly far too painful for me. She had some moves where it felt like I was being choked and when she kneading into my scalp, I was wincing in pain. I get that I'm tight and she was just trying to loosen it, but it was just way, way too much pressure! And I am usually one to love deep tissue massages!! When I had no choice but to say that it was too much, she came completely off of my neck instead of just going lighter, which is what I was afraid would happen. Another thing that didn't really jive with me was how much heat and oils she used. I don't really need all that stuff; I'd rather the focus be more on the massage, itself. I was relieved when she finally removed a pile of heating pads that she had stacked onto my back! Even though most of it was not my thing, I think Elise is very nice and caring and talented at what she does! It's also a really nice, private setting. And lots of people will appreciate how strong she is! And yes, I could have taken the time to keep telling her it was too much, but again, I don't like to interfere too much with the therapist's flow.

Yes, it's their job and they've probably seen worse, but hey, it's my body and I'll cry if I want to. I also think I dislike massages because when I relax, I like to fart. Push down on my abdomen at your own risk, my friends. Massaging hands create external pressure leading to internal pressure and there's nary a release valve in sight. Oy. I don't find that too relaxing to be quite honest. I guess I could just let one rip, but then I'd have to tip at least 90% and I don't think I could afford that. Oh the winds of change, they are a-breakin'. However, once in a while my wife tires of massaging my shoulders and shouldering my farts and she buys me a gift certificate to her massage therapist, Christine Legnon. Despite my earlier protestations, I like my Christine massages. She has a supernatural sense of where to push, where to rub, how strong and how much. And I get by the farting part simply by falling asleep half the time. Yes, Christine's magical hands manage to keep even the crankiest of digestive tracks at bay. In fact, Allure Magazine agrees with me (with Christine being awesome, not my gassiness), blurbing Christine in a recent issue. (See the pic.) Christine will talk if you want, but since I'm not a talker during massages, she respects that. That's cool. I hate talkative masseuses. As if I don't have enough going on in my head, gassy and nearly naked on a stranger's table, I've got to come up with small talk? So if you're a massage therapist and happen to be reading this review, please keep the chit chat to a minimum. Just let the candles soothe and the Enya play on. Speaking of which, I've not actually had a massage at Christine's new place, but I have seen it. Pretty, cozy and Studioplexy. This is the only reason I'm reviewing Christine separately from Aviary Organic Beauty Collective. Now let's review what we've learned today. 1) Christine is a fantastic massage therapist. (And for you Mythbuster fans, I think she bears a striking resemblance to Kari B.) 2) Nothing is worse than a chatty massage therapist. 3) I'm gassier than the love child of John Madden and the Hindenburg. I was about to go on vacation, and my back muscles were a bit tight. I had been thinking about…read moregetting a massage for a while, since it had been over a year, and this business was right across South Cobb Drive from the Planet Fitness that I usually go to. I did check the Yelp reviews, and there were 6 non-recommended reviews. Even though the reviews were not recommended, they generally seemed positive. Since I had very little time left before my vacation, I decided to give the place a try. When I walked in, there was only one person working, and luckily they were available to give me a massage. They had a menu of services listed on the desk. A regular one hour massage is $70, but I decided to go for the one hour deep tissue massage for $80. One odd thing is that I had to pay for the massage up front, however, I was still able to add a tip after the service. Every massage place has a different style, including this place. You never really know what to expect the first time you go. The massage began without the use of oil, but it still felt fine. A lot of pressure was used, but I expected that with a deep tissue massage. Even though I had gone to the chiropractor three hours earlier, one part of my spine between my shoulder blades popped back into place during the beginning of the massage. It must have been out of place for months, and I'm not sure why the chiropractor didn't address it. Various pressure points were used during the massage, and it definitely helped my muscles to relax, even though parts of a deep tissue massage are not always comfortable. I was asked at various points if I was doing fine and if the pressure was good. I've had many massages over the years, and I could tell that the person had a lot of massage experience. At the end of the massage, I could tell that I felt relaxed. Any tight spots that I had were gone. For the next two days, I noticed that the area between my shoulder blades felt different. My spine must have been out of alignment for so long, that my muscles were readjusting. It has now been a week and a half after my massage. I still feel good, and my spine has held the adjustment. I plan to get a massage at least monthly, and I will come back to this place. I would recommend calling ahead to make sure that they have availability. I was very lucky that I walked in at the right time with no appointment.

At that location, I was given a form asking about problem areas, the therapist discussed what needed attention, and the massage felt customized to me. That was not my experience here. When I arrived, I was simply asked how long I wanted the massage to be, and I was charged immediately. After that, there was very little communication. I was shown to a clean but sparse room, and the massage began without any discussion of pressure, problem areas, or what I was hoping to get from the session. The massage itself was relaxing enough, but it felt very generic. Most of the time was spent on my back and legs, with no particular attention given to areas that actually needed it. I teach and train Brazilian jiu-jitsu, so my hands often hurt and could have used extra work, but since the therapist barely spoke to me, that never came up. My hands received only a few seconds of attention each. The room was clean, but there was no noticeable aromatherapy or anything else that made the experience feel especially calming. The music was also on a very short loop, which became distracting after hearing the same song repeatedly. I left feeling slightly more relaxed, but the experience did not feel personalized and was not comparable to other massages I've had at a similar price. It was not terrible, but it was disappointing and not something I would return for.
