Overall: Great effort, decent execution.
I'm not going to discuss my own value judgment of the concept of InStock, suffice it to say that they rescue food that would otherwise be thrown away and turn it into meals. 50% of the food we produce gets thrown away and they want to draw attention to this, so they are as much about spreading the message as about the actual process. Some people like this, some don't, but the food is all perfectly fine to eat.
Food: 3.5/5
Obviously they have to work with what they are given, but to me the food was a bit too "Dutch palate" to be truly enjoyable. We had broccoli soup (which was literally just warm grated broccoli with some garlic, a very weird mealy texture), curried beef and potatoes (nice flavours but absolutely lacking any spice/salt/interest) and devil's food cake with oranges and a little bit of cream (clearly out of a box). Everything was *fine*, especially for the price of €22 for the whole meal, but objectively as a meal? Meh.
Atmosphere: 3/5
When we arrived at 8 pm on a Wednesday it was PACKED. Luckily we reserved, but we were squeezed into a row of tables with large groups on either side of us. You couldn't get up to use the bathroom without hitting someone in the face with your butt. Accordingly it was also very very loud and my party of 3 had a lot of trouble hearing each other even though we were around a tiny table. Decor and everything is nice but this is definitely a trouble point.
Service: 4.5/5
Not a full 5 stars because they did get some things wrong a couple of times, but overall the service was lovely - very friendly, very earnest, and clearly very invested in the whole concept and wanting everyone to have a good experience. (AKA the opposite of normal Dutch service!) One of the cooks even came out from the kitchen to ask us how we liked the meal. Easily the best part of the experience! read more
