Chocolate Chunk Cookie
Christina H.

WARM, GOOEY AND WORTH EVERY SINGLE CALORIE. As someone with a major sweet tooth, going to insomnia cookies alway gets me excited. Can't get a cookie better than this: the perfect texture and filled with chocolate chunks. Definitely has to top it with a scoop of moose track ice cream.

What 24 cookies, 3 milks, and a pint look like.

I've ordered from Insomnia Cookies a few times now, with varying results. It seems to be hit and miss. I've never been in the actual shop, but I have gotten deliveries to my dorm room. One of the things that I do really like about Insomnia Cookies is that it is one of the few places in town that delivers ice cream, and I think it's the only place that delivers whole pints. I've tried both the mint chocolate chip flavor and the strawberry cheesecake flavor, and both were good. I preferred the cheesecake. I was pleasantly surprised that the ice cream was still completely frozen and not at all melted when it got to my door. The first time I ordered, I got the TBMOC, which is 24 cookies for 28$ dollars. I got a combination of chocolate chunk, double chocolate chunk, peanut butter chip, M&M, and double chocolate mint. I also got three milks, and a pint of ice cream. The milks are $3 each, and the ice cream is $7 for a pint. They were warm and chewy and absolutely amazing, the perfect thing I needed to sate my sweet tooth. The delivery girl was super nice and friendly, and it was a good experience. However, the second time, not so much. I got the same general order, with the flavors switched around, plus a premium Smores cookie for $2.95. The boy who delivered my order was annoyed by the fact that he had to call me to get my order. I live in a dorm with security, I'm sorry it was an inconvenience to you that I wasn't going to wait outside for half an hour? It was rude. The cookies were also underbaked. They weren't just soft, but fell apart like they hadn't been baked enough. The smores cookie had a weird, salty taste that wasn't worth it. I do think they're overpriced. I understand that I'm paying to have it delivered, but seriously? $7 dollars for a pint of ice cream and $3 for a single serving of milk? I'd order a lot more if the prices weren't so steep. I'd order from them again in the future, but I'll definitely be paying more attention to service and quality to decide if I should keep them in my regular take-out rotation or to call it a aday.

Yummy! M&M Cookiewich

The portions are HUGE and the possibilities seem endless. Highly recommend creating your own ice cream sandwich

I think Nate and Michelle should stick to running a food truck! Out of everything, pasta was worse than Fazolis, the "fillet" was a cheap frozen pre grill marked steak folded in half to look like a filet, out of asparagus, side was frozen french fries, salad was floating in dressing. Had 3 servers, was told people were walking out so guess that should have been our clue to run for the exit as well! Michelle spilled a drink on my friend's phone, no apologies, I had sweet tea, Michelle sits the pitcher down and says "there's the pitcher". Michelle brings my friend a refill and slams her soda down. No apologies or nothing! I'm sure this place will be going bankrupt soon and back to the food truck big Nate will be going to! We did have lots of laughs because we've all never been somewhere so terrible! As we're walking out Michelle says "be careful don't let grandma fall", the woman she's referring to was highly offended because she's not a grandma! A frozen dinner or McDonald's would be better than this place. Some are food truck people some are restaurant people, we clearly know what kind of people Michelle and Nate are.

La Jarochita Mexican Grill - Delicious and fresh!

Did someone say Taco Tuesday? Well, I don't care what day it is, when I'm craving a little…read moresomething with flavors "south of the border," I'm heading to La Jarochita Mexican Grill! I have passed this little red food truck parked perched on the hill in the parking lot of the Shell Gas Station on Reed Station Road in Carbondale, IL for the last three years, but never stopped in. I would often wonder what they served, but figured that it must good be because they stayed in business and I would see customers lined up at different times. Today was my day to experience La Jarochita! I took my time looking over the extensive menu of options and asking questions. The menu consists of individual items and larger plates/dinner sizes. I found the prices and portions very reasonable. The sweet young lady at the window did her best to answer my questions while waiting for other customers. Once I decided on the Steak Sopes (something new for me), she told me it would be about a six-minute wait to get my food. As customers came and went, I took note of the quaint and clean picnic tables with umbrellas placed as a sit-in eating option. There are accessible parking options in the parking lot, and bathrooms are located in the gas station. When I received my order, I could hardly wait to try it. I opened the neatly packaged bag and the aroma of well-spiced beef hit me instantly. I can't express how delicious this little dish was. I have never had anything like it! The thick tortilla-like bottom layer was covered with tender beef, beans, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo salad, and lettuce-- it had a dance party in my mouth. Word to the wise, the sauce in the bag is literally FIRE. Unless you like spicy, leave it closed. LOL I cannot wait to go back to order something else, and I won't be waiting for Tuesdays to support this local minority-owned small business. I highly recommend you stop by this little red food truck for some yummy, fresh, and authentic Mexican food at a great price. When you stop in, tell them Kindra Speech sent ya!

I found aloe vera juice, spring roll wrappers, pho noodles, etc. You would never be able to find that at a Kroger's. The man who works here is very nice and accommodating. If there is something you need, he will try to get it for you (even if it's out of stock). The only downside is that they have no fresh seafood, but that is something I can live without. They were crunchy and delicious (a great chip replacement). I saw durian popsicles, too. Crazy. There were great cheeses I never find at the regular grocery store, including Kashkawan (or Kashkaval) cheese...one of my favorites. I also found Thai tea, tahini, horchata mix, and many many other delicious fabulous things for me to experiment with. The guy running the place was super helpful and friendly. I think the prices are reasonable. I saw some of the same international items at the grocery store for a higher price. There was plenty of parking.

If you have never heard Winston's Bagels, let me introduce you...Foodie, meet Winston. Winston,…read moremeet foodie. You can now fall in love. Winston's Bagels are LEGENDARY in Carbondale, IL. The genius behind the tasty treat is Winston. He's a hippy 60(?) something man with a food cart who, in my day set up his mobile shop on "The Strip" - Carbondale's main bar scene. I hear he's moved onto Grand now, but wherever he is, YOU NEED TO BE THERE TOO. Here's the scoop... Winston comes out at night, just about the time the college kids are bar hopping. He sets up his small mobile cart, and starts cranking out The. Best. Bagel. Treat. You. Will. Ever. Eat. Winston grills the bagels over charcoal, which gives the bread a traditional char taste and creates this fantastic crunch when you bite into it. He drizzles the bagel with margarine (I think it's Parkay from the yellow and blue squeeze bottle), and generously tops each bagel side with plain cream cheese. Then the magic happens. You choose your toppings. I'm partial to the Everything: apple, cinnamon, sunflower seeds, cucumber, red onion, garlic powder, bacon bits, and raisins. It's the perfect morsel to have when you're out drinking in Carbondale - every college student learns this lesson to perfection at SIUC - or even if you just have a late night craving for a sweet / savory treat. Of course as alumni (Class of '95!), we all crave a Winston Bagel now and then, and when we go back it's a must eat treat! I've tried to make them at home, but it's just not the same. It's missing Winston's je nais se quoi. He generously doles out hugs, stories, jokes, and charm along with his bagels. Plus the man is a total genius. He charges $2.25 for a bagel. That fits any pocket book - and more often than not - you give him three dollars and tell him to keep the change. The man is making some dough. I hear he takes a couple vacations a year just with his tip money. Go fall in love with Winston The Bagel Man. He'll be there in Carbondale grilling his bagels into the wee hours of the morning!

At last visit, they were $2.25 each and still worth every bite. Winston sets up shop across the street from Pinch Penny Liquors near Saluki Bookstore. Options are the same as I remember: Cream Cheese, Garlic Salt, Butter, Ground Cinnamon, Cucumber, Apple, Raisins, Sunflower Seeds, Bacon Bits, Onions. I used to get sunflower seeds, butter, and cucumber but recently tried all-but-onion and am not quite sure I can go back. Remember cash only, and they don't break $20s. Definitely tip Winston or any of his helpers running the cart! Truly an institution in Carbondale!
