Best place for coffee in Carbondale. Common Grounds is a pretty simple looking place with the coffee being the main reason to come here. It also seems like a popular location to study for SIU students. Has pretty basic options along with seasonal favorites. The prices are pretty okay for around here and it's pretty good quality. Any college town needs to have a place to get coffee. It's not like there's many other good options. This is one reason why it's the best in town. Good options among the flavors. It's about $6 for a latte. The last time here I got the Black Forest Mocha. Had lots of chocolate flavor. The food options are paltry. It's about $2 for a bagel. They also have a few other things such as muffins. For this town it's not bad. It's located on East Grand Avenue at Wall Street. Have not spent time here for several years. Are used to do paperwork and meet friends here at this coffee house. Really nice college coffee house vibe here -- understandable, considering its proximity to SIU. I got an iced tiramisu latte, and it was good, though not so different in taste from a straight caramel latte. Cost $4.35 for medium size, which felt expensive, but is comparable to Starbucks. I'd love to make it back here to hang out and work sometime, as the ambience is unlike anything close to my house. Sadly, Carbondale is pretty out of the way. read more

First time visiting the shop, I ordered a cold brew. When I got it, it tasted like water with a hint of coffee. Coffee isn't coffee if you can see through it. I felt kind of bad but I asked the barista to add an extra shot of expresso to it and that I would pay for it. This person said, "Yea, some people don't like our coffee because it's too weak." Hmm. If that's true why not make stronger coffee and keep your customers happy? After adding the extra shot of expresso the coffee was fine but really I shouldn't have to do that. read more

I came here looking for a place to get coffee and study. The coffee was okay, a little overpriced. I ordered a hazelnut iced coffee once that tasted like blueberry, that wasn't good at all. The killer for me though, is that they give you a WiFi password on your receipt, which only gives you 3 hours of WiFi per drink you purchase. There are too many other places where I can get free refills and study on the wifi all day to justify coming back here anymore. VERY DISAPPOINTED! Common Grounds says that they close at 6 pm. My mother and I got there at 5:45 and the young girl told us they weren't taking anymore orders after the two people who were in line. If you are open until 6 then she should stop taking orders at 6. Adjust your times if you need too. But you shouldn't turn paying customers away while you are still open. As a student, I love a coffe shop to study at but this place is often very noisy, poor hours, and isn't really the optimal coffee shop study place. This is a great little coffee shop. My brother and I were in Carbondale for about three days and stop by there no less than four times. Service was a bit slow but it was personable and it's nice that it's not a big chain or namebrand coffee joint. It has a nice quiet atmosphere and the selection is rather large. Great place to study, open late, friendly atmosphere, usually pretty quiet. If you get just a plain coffee, it's freshly made (like an Americano) which is awesome! You don't have to worry about getting stale coffee. The staff is always very friendly and the music is usually pretty good. I've spent many hours doing homework here and I have no bad things to say! Pretty standard cafe. They offer pretty decent espresso and are just okay at frothing. I am giving three stars because their drinks are consistent decent. One thing I would like to see is perhaps baristas who can do latte art when pouring into glass mugs, not a big deal though. Good texture without latte art is still worth drinking! Their prices are fairly average, being just a bit cheaper than Starbucks. Atmosphere is decent, it seems dark when first entering but I usually have no trouble reading on my e-reader, and the tables are generally large enough to do some mid-level studying. Moderate loudness music is generally played, so if you're easily distracted, it might be difficult to study here. Beware that, during semester, it can get a bit crowded with students, although, in my experiences, there is always at least somewhere to sit. read more
