This place is a time-warp back to 2015! I suppose they started it when self-serve fro-yo was a big thing, and it just somehow hung on in town even as the trends shifted. In any case, the ice cream is pretty good. Not spectacular, but they have a lot of flavors and they come through pretty clearly. This place is very similar to YogurtLand, but this place has more ice cream flavor options and topping options, including various amounts or sprinkles and sauce toppings. My sister and I were talking to the clerk (and she was SUPER nice!!) and it came up how we have nothing quite this intense back in California - sure, we have frozen yogurt, but never in my life have I seen so many toppings!! I would have to say that this place is just a little bit better than Chill. The decor of the place gives off a downhome feel, where families can mingle and enjoy each other's company (unlike Chill which is more of a teenager hang out). The service is great! The people are very nice and care about what you think. I think the two things that made Cool Spoons stand out for me was the fact that they have the tart flavored yogurt (or California tart) that is famous at other major yogurt chains, and the way they serve their toppings. Most of the toppings are in these tall tubes that can be emptied with a push of a lever. To me, that is much more sanitary than Chill which leaves everything pretty much out in the open. They also have happy face spoons for you to scoop other toppings that aren't found in the vertical tubes. I would say that this place has better service, better selection, and a better set-up than their competitor. read more

Cool Spoons is one of the best discoveries I've made in my time down here in Carbondale. The decor is really friendly and welcoming, and there's a good amount of seating. It's always clean and the staff is always helpful when you need them to. This is a pay-by-the-ounce do-it-yourself frozen yogurt place in the same vein as 16 Handles or Red Mango. I really like that this shop has little sample cups on display, so you can try the flavors before you commit to them. You grab a cup, go to the wall of frozen yogurt, gelato, and sorbet flavors, and fill and blend flavors to your heart's content. Most recently on my visit, I combined Key Lime and Cake Batter- it was definitely a good life choice. If you don't want a bowl, for an up charge you can get a waffle cone. And then there's toppings, and good lord do they have everything you could ever want. They have a bar of cold toppings that includes cheesecake pieces (my favorite), boba, fruits, and bacon. That's right. Bacon. Then you turn and the wall is FILLED with topping dispensers. These are filled with anything from graham cracker crumbs to Jelly Bellies to chocolate rocks to animal crackers. They also have some no sugar added options. And then you get to the sauces, hot or cold, in any flavor you could imagine. It's pay by the ounce, and I believe it's like .47$ an ounce or something like that, so the price depends on how much you load up your cup. For me it's usually between four or five dollars. It's a great place to hang out or bring kids, and it's fun to keep coming back to try new flavor combinations. read more

Excellent place in you are in the mood for frozen yogurt! We started going here when they first opened and have been by every time we are in town. There are about a dozen flavors of yogurt to choose from and probably near 100 toppings. I don't think I made the same thing twice yet. The store was hopping but not obnoxiously loud. It is a place you can take your kids for a treat and let them draw on the chalk board walls. it is almost set up like a living room, entertainment area vs a sterile ice cream store. read more

I agree with other reviews. Lots of choices. Great atmosphere and location I have to mention that the young man that works there acts like he owns the place. Others mention Julie is the owner, and I did not get this young man's name. He was off the charts customer service in showing us the shop, helping us and doing all sorts of intense cleaning work. I thought he was the owner as he acted that way. I am not sure if he is, but if he is not the owner the owners are super lucky to have an employee who treats the store like it was his own business. With employers struggling to even hire someone. I hope they appreciate how over and above he went for the customers and store. read more

Cool Spoons is one of my favorite froyo places I've ever stopped at. They have 12 different flavors, ranging from the basic vanilla and chocolate, to the more exciting birthday cake and butter pecan. What I like best about Cool Spoons is they create really great swirls such as cookies and cream and birthday cake to make "Oreo cake," which was SO GOOD! I also have a friend that is lactose intolerant, and I'm glad he can join in and come to Cool Spoons because they always have 2-3 sorbet options as well. As much as I love the froyo options, the toppings are even better! They have a million different cereals, gummies, fruits, chocolate pieces, syrups, and everything in between. I probably put on about 15 different things, totally going overboard. At only $0.49 an ounce, it came out pretty cheap, which makes me way more inclined to revisit again and again and again! Tip: outdoor seating means you can bring your dog as well! :) read more

Omg! Couldn't say anything better about Cool Spoons! Absolutely fabulous!!! All our cups were empty before I could even get a picture. This place has sooooo many toppings!!! The next best thing I have to say is, wow on the ice cream, gelato, sorbet, yogurt, and custard options! Normally I'm not a frozen yogurt person but thank goodness this place has a ton of other options! Amazing selection on the toppings, you couldn't image one and it not be there literally they have EVERYTHING!!! Good pricing too. It wasn't that bad. 40cents a ounce, seems just okay on price but for what you get and how good it is, totally worth it!!! Very helpful and friendly staff too. They also let you try out the different flavors. Great space, inside and outside dining, & clean environment. Very impressed! Cool Spoons is much more "chill" than their competitor, Chill. For a frozen yogurt shop, this place is surprisingly low-key and relaxing. They have less flavors than Chill, but they have way, way more toppings available. Also, there's information for people with food sensitivities/allergies posted next to each flavor of yogurt. It's super helpful that they have little "contains gluten" signs next to the flavors that contain gluten. It's this kind of friendly helpfulness and attention to detail that makes me want to give them all my money when it's hot outside! My biggest complaint is that the spoons you're given to eat your yogurt with are plain, boring, non-colored plastic spoons. If you're going to call yourself Cool Spoons, give me a cool spoon to eat with. (Chill has neon ones - that's 'cool' to me, oh burn). Fantastic. New flavors based on the season (yesterday they had peach and strawberry - talk about a hard choice!) as well as the classics. We were in town visiting our son at SIU and the weather was unseasonably hot and humid. While picking up some clothes for him at the nearby mall, my wife decided frozen yogurt was needed to beat the heat (and put out the fire from hot wings we had for lunch at BW3). Cool Spoons is top notch, from the selection of frozen goodies, to the toppings, to the quick, friendly service. They are conveniently located, the facilities are clean and inviting, plus the price is right at around $5/person for some sizeable portions. Another plus is that they accept the SIU "Debit Dawg" payment card, which make it more accessible to students. We willl be back! read more

I do wish they would change the flavors of the frozen yogurt more often. But I guess it's a good thing that they don't because then I'd be in there more. The flavors are always pretty tasty, they're about standard I'd say, with a few 'special' flavors sometimes. It's really the toppings that are worth going for. They have a wall of frozen yogurt flavors that you can choose from, then what seems like a small candy store for toppings to choose from.
