I did so after having visited it several times, having had their ice-cream and homemade cookies, and having talked to and interviewed their store employees as well as their truck driver who brings their ice-cream and cookie dough from Lynchburg, Virginia. Now that Rookie's has relocated from their Downtown Roanoke store to Cave Springs, at 3549 Electric Rd, Suite D, I have decided to visit their new location, and write an update review. I urge all the readers to this review to also go back and read my first review and accompanied photographs to learn more about the history of the company. For Rookie's is more than just an Ice Cream Parlor. It's a place where desserts and friends meet to create something memorable. Their employees are encouraged to establish conversations with their customers and answer questions about their company and their products. And their comfortable ambiance and seating area contribute to the enjoyment and extraordinary sweet dining experience while people socialize with family and friends, and share quality time with them. The new location is more family-friendly and has more parking than their previous location. The residents of Cave Springs have welcomed Rookie's with open arms and have become steady customers in a relatively short period of time. I was impressed to find out that it is located in thr same Shopping Center as Cafe Asia 2 Restaurant, one of my favorites Asian Restaurants. Rookie's continues to offer different flavors of cookies, homemade ice cream, and signature ice cream sandwiches, in a clean and simple interior design relaxing environment, and with excellent customer service from their warm, knowledgeable, and friendly staff. Today I visited the new location with a friend and both of us interacted with the servers and had ice-cream sandwiches. Mine was Mint Chocolate Chip cookies with Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. The combination of the two made the perfect sweet snack or dessert. During the time we were there chatting and enjoying our ice-cream sandwich, we saw many other customers come in and do the same. It seems that Rookie's made a great strategic move for a win win situation between the company and its customers. A quote from the owner of the community I feel best describes it best: "We believe that community is built on a foundation of celebrating something good and we believe our handcrafted ice cream sandwiches. Ice cream, cookies & milk will bring you together! We're all about the memories made and the nostalgia we hope you feel whenever you tuck in to a treat with friends and family." All of Rookie's ice cream is handcrafted in Lynchburg, and they offer vegan and gluten-free options. Rookie's hopes to continue expanding to other locations, with some customers even asking for a location in North Carolina. I highly recommend this business and its products, and consider it one of the City of Roanoke's gem.

The hours are limited, but I suspect that after dark is not a great time to do business in such a location. For those not seeking dairy, the place does offer frozen lemonade. They are cash only. When I rolled up, I was gruffly told that you could only get one flavor with an order. I ordered a waffle cone and the cone itself was nothing special. The ice cream itself delivered the complex dairy flavor you would hope for, and my salted caramel was mouthwatering. It's a lot to pay for one flavor of ice cream in that amount, and if I came back I'd get a cup instead, but the quality was there.

Sometimes in the most common places one finds the most extraordinary things. For this reason we…read moresometimes need to "stop and smell the roses." In a cute, little, Hispanic family-owned business off Williamson Road in Roanoke, Virginia, I discovered this dessert shop named "La Michoacana." Followed by the slogan "El Autentico Sabor a Mexico." (The Authentic Flavor of Mexico). And to my surprise it was like finding the gold pot at the end of the rainbow. After being awarded the NC Triad Yelp Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And La Michoacana in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. First of all, I wondered, why this name? What does it mean? "Michoacana is a lady who comes from Michoacan", the owner of the business told me. "I am a Michoacana." "I was born in Michuacan.," she continued. What is the significance of naming this business this name besides being that the owner comes from this state in Mexico? I did my research and found that Michuacan, is a state in west-central Mexico, known for its rich indigenous culture and the world's largest avocado producer. It is often called "The Soul of Mexico" due to its deep cultural heritage and vibrant traditions. The state is also famous for its carnitas, a dish of pork slow-cooked in lard; and is known as the "carnitas capital of the world." Michuacan is also considered the birthplace of paletas (Mexican popsicles). And these "paletas" imported from Mexico, together with Mexican "nieve," which is the word used in Mexico for helado or ice cream are two of the main products sold here, together with creative fruit snacks. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review for seeing is believing, and for an ice cream and dessert shop to be in business for almost 10 years now their products must be good. And I can tell you they are for I tasted them myself. As soon as I arrived, I parked my car in one of only three parking spaces in front of the store. Later I found out by the owners that they have more parking in the back of the store. A friendly lady who was the original founder and owner of the store and for whom the store was named, gave me a warm welcome after I greeted her in Spanish. Her husband of 5 years, whom she met at the store, was also there working and welcomed me. The store used to be smaller but after they married, the husband helped expand it. Many of us are familiar with American and Italian Ice Cream. I am also familiar with Caribbean Ice Cream made originally by Cuban-Chinese who afterwards moved to Puerto Rico and established their Ice cream shops there and were well known by their Creamy Tropical fruits Ice Creams such as Mango, Mamey, Guanabana, Coco, and Piña, among others. Mexican Ice cream is also unique in its very own way. I ordered a Bionico which was fresh fruits cut in pieces with a special sweet cream and granola on top. I also tried their Mango nieve (ice cream), and a Mango paleta (popsicle). They were very flavorful and with pieces of the fruit inside. I definitely highly recommend this dessert place when you feel like eating something sweet and refreshing. I found out that soon they are thinking of having crepes as well. I definitely will be returning soon for some more sweet treats and enjoyable conversation with these very pleasant couple.
