Love sugar magnolia as a treat all times of the year. They have fantastic ice cream with a large selection of flavors and delicious chocolates. I also hear their hot chocolate is delicious, but I haven't tried it myself. Additionally, there is a little store in the back with preppy decor largely themed around the university. The prices for the food are a little high, but the ice cream is so good, I think it's worth it. read more

We visited when we were dropping my daughter off to college. My son got chocolate ice cream (he's 7 so he liked it). My husband and I both got milkshakes. He got the chocolate and banana and it was normal. I got the peach cobbler milkshake. It was very "watered down" with more milk than ice cream and the flavor was lacking but likely because of all of the milk. read more

My friends and I walked over to Sugar Magnolia for a sweet treat after dinner on a Friday night. Since it was summertime in a college town, it wasn't too busy. The shop is in a great location downtown, close to campus and other familiar spots. We hopped in line right away and were greeted with a variety of ice cream flavors to sample. I went with the classic Vanilla Bean in a kiddie cup, which I appreciated since sometimes you just want a little taste without going all in. Everyone in my group enjoyed their picks. While checking out, I noticed their display of chocolates and other fun sweets. There's also a gift shop attached with cute trinkets to browse. The shop itself is friendly, clean, and charming, with plenty of indoor seating if you want to stay and hang out. It's a great local spot for a causal dessert run, and I'd definitely stop by again. read more

What a terrific ice cream and gift shop Wry open bright and welcoming Felt like a large one you would find at the beach or something Highly impressed and friendly service Give it a rare five star first visit as I don't know how the experience could have been any better A few outdoor seats as well read more

2nd time here and had to get sugar magnolia! Favorite flavors are Sea turtle - caramel flavor with mini chocolate turtles filled with caramel. So yummy, very sweet. Coffee - balanced the sea turtle out well as a double scoop. I love the mini chocolate bites sooo much. Great added crunch. Great indoor seating area with a little shop connected read more

Fiiiiiiiiiiiinally (after 4 years!) got a chance to try this place in the "off season" a couple weeks ago after school ended for the academic year and the campus was a ghost town. So nice to be able to walk into Sugar Magnolia and not see a SOUL in line. We walked right up and got served. They have a lot of cool combo and creative flavors - I can't remember the exact name of what we got but it was a coffee based ice cream with caramel and chocolate - decadent, dense and rich and, between the 2 of us, a small sized cup was all we needed - definitely shareable. It felt like the cup held a pound of ice cream lol (see my pics). GREAT LOCATION RIGHT IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN ON MAIN. The interior of the shop is super cute (and clean and well maintained) with a lot of table and chair seating. There's also a sweet shop and a cute gift shop attached. Even with it being a ghost town for the summer, you can tell this is a happening place and a fun student hangout. Again, if you're in town during the summer, definitely pop in for a sweet treat. (We saved some room for dessert here after a nice dinner at Yeah Siam - THE BEST Thai food (and reasonably priced) in Blacksburg - and walking distance steps away, around the corner from Sugar Magnolia - check out my reviews for Yeah Siam!). 4 STARS for Sugar Magnolia because I didn't have to wait in a line lol, because it's a small local business (support small businesses!) and because the ice cream is amazing - from the first mouth-watering bite, you can taste the homemade-ness and creamy rich quality of the ice cream with so many amazing creative flavors to choose from. I'm a fan. :) read more

One of the few gems in Blacksburg. Great place to cool off after a hot day on campus or a big exam. Ice cream is tasty and very reasonably priced. Every flavor I've had has been delicious and makes picking my order very difficult. The stationery store is also cute! They have amazing creative flavors that are unique to the store. I personally loved the mint cookie and Eskimo kisses . They have candy, chocolate, coffee, and popcorn! Lots of snacks to snack on. Beautiful decor, bright and welcoming. Fantastic service. My son, ordered a cup and soon realized the error of his ways when he saw the waffle cones. We decided to stop in for some ice cream after dinner in Blacksburg and Sugar Magnolia did not disappoint. We had no clue what we were walking into but the atmosphere was great, it was much more spacious inside than we expected. We were greeted immediately and our orders were taken.. when getting close to the register we just happened to notice these pretzels.(I can't lie, I do not remember for the life of me what either flavor is but they are amazing!!) This place has great unique ice cream flavors if you're in the mood to switch it up. They also offer a variety of desserts including milkshakes and banana splits. I like especially how they offer sorbet and dairy free options. It's location right in downtown Blacksburg is great although parking can be somewhat difficult. The ambiance of it is phenomenal and they even have a little shop for knick knacks. It can get pretty busy sometimes however the staff is very efficient in serving their customers. The pricing is great and they offer an array of toppings -- with the hood whipped cream iykyk. I would give this place 5 stars if the ice cream was a little tastier read more

We were out leaf peeping and found ourselves in Blacksburg. Beautiful. We found Sugar Magnolias on S. Main Street near the Post Office. Ice cream? Whaaaat? As you enter it looks like a typical ice cream shop. We had reviewed the flavor selection before I went in to order. Mom ordered her normal chocolate, double scoop. She said it was excellent. I got my 22 month old granddaughter a milkshake because I thought it was the best bet for her as we drove back to Roanoke. She got it everywhere. I had a sip as I walked back to the car...incredible. I got the Michigan Pothole which is chocolate ice cream with streams of fudge and chunks of chocolate. I'm not sure what the name means except maybe "extra yummy"!!! I will be back if only to explore the store. Who am I kidding? I'll be back for the ice cream! read more

This place is adorable!! I visited somewhat recently on a trip to Blacksburg, VA. This adorable little ice cream shop is located in the downtown / Main Street of Blacksburg, and just a couple of blocks away from the campus of Virginia Tech. It definitely feels like it's situated in a college town. The ice cream shop is so cute, the people who work there are very nice, and there are plenty of ice cream flavors to choose from! I opted for the strawberry cheesecake ice cream, which was simply fantastic!! We were able to go inside, but grabbed our ice cream to go (they do have a nice seating area as well). Parking is tough in the main street area, but we found parking on a side street behind the shop. In all, a great experience and I definitely recommend it, especially if you are craving ice cream as badly as I was when I visited! read more

I only ordered delivery, but both the popcorn and the chocolates are top-notch and the team went above and beyond when my order was mis-delivered and delayed. I do appreciate a business that shows it cares about its clientele! Would definitely recommend! read more

Sugar Magnolia is the kind of place you want to hang out with your friends on a warm spring evening, perusing the funny cards while you eat your ice cream. Unfortunately, during the Covid-19 crisis, you can't actually go inside anymore. But they've done a grand job pivoting. We got a sundae bar to go the other night--and one for our neighbors. For $25 you get a quart of Homestead creamery ice cream (we actually convinced the servers to make it two pints of different flavors, cookies and cream and Moose Tracks), a can of whipped cream, 6 waffle cones, and containers of M&Ms, chocolate chips, sprinkles, and mini marshmallows. It was the perfect way to perk up a Friday night in quarantine. I'm also a big fan of their chocolates. Truffles, peanut butter Oreos, chocolate-covered graham crackers and pretzels, we've tried and loved them all. Sugar Magnolia is also my fave place for gift certificates for teachers and friends. Who doesn't love ice cream and chocolate? So glad this fun business is in our downtown. read more

The pumpkin pie ice cream was delicious!! Great seasonal flavor!! I will look forward to coming back!

This is such a fun place. They have a great rotating selection of ice cream flavors and an amazing chocolate collection. They have a bunch of fun gifts if you need to grab something for someone. I went in their recently to try their ice cream nachos and was not disappointed by the yummy waffle cone chips, 3 ice cream scoops, and as many toppings as you want. Caution, bring a friend if you want to try it! You'll need at least two people to tackle that much ice cream! read more

I was super excited about going to this place....I've heard a lot about it. I was disappointed to say the least. Overpriced ice cream and not worth the cost. I prefer Cookout's ice cream. Quantity and price much better!!! read more

We came at 9:03 and the guy at the register said they were closed at 9 and they couldn't serve us, we walk around the gift shop and as we come back he's scooping ice cream for another person who came after us as a courtesy to them, looked at us and tried to avoid eye contact. Not sure why an ice cream shop in the middle of town closes so early, but that was just unnecessary. read more

Two words: Homestead Creamery. Thanks to the higher fat percentage of Jersey milk (the breed...not the state), it has to be the best ice cream in Virginia. Although they sell Homestead at your local Kroger, there's something about indulging in it at Sugar Magnolia while Main Street people-watching. There are a lot of cute gifts to be perused in the store, I will keep Sugar Magnolia in mind next time I need a present for mom or a friend. As a new place they have a lot of people coming in, and they do a good job of keeping the line moving. They don't have quite enough seats or tables though. My most absolute, minor, first-world complaint is their spoons: they are some of the biggest wastes of plastic I've ever seen! Yes, they're cute and match the theme of the store...but they are very hard to eat with, and I cringe at the amount of thick, green eating utensils being trucked to the landfill. Blacksburg needed a good, local ice cream shop...I'm glad one finally opened up! read more

This is a review for ice cream. The whole family agrees that this is our go-to place for ice cream in Blacksburg now. I felt very confident in their coronavirus protocols and they had tall plexiglass between the employees and customers. Good service. The ice cream was reasonably priced and the 'small' size was a generous serving. I got the strawberry and it was sooo good. It was sweet and creamy with little chunks of strawberry. Really good consistency too. I will be going here again for sure! read more

Kalley at Sugar Magnolia went above and beyond to make my daughter's birthday extra special. I made the mistake of using GrubHub for the delivery and they did not deliver what was ordered or willing to wait for a phone call to fix the order. In my opinion, a true test of a business is when something less than ideal happens and they truly want to make it right. This is exactly what Kalley did and I will make a point to patron Sugar Magnolia on every visit to Tech. Sugar Magnolia's is a business I am proud to support and the tremendous effort was made to correct a mistake that was not even theirs but GrubHub. Many, many thanks! Go Hokies!! read more
