Today I happened to be in the area with a friend and after having dinner at a Chinese restaurant we decided to go there to have ice-cream for dessert. When we arrived we noticed that the Ice Cream Parlor and Restaurant shares a large parking lot with the other stores of that Mall, and it's located in the last storefront on the left of the strip mall. The sign high above of the front of the business reads: Lickidy Split - ICE CREAM & MORE. And on the windows it mentions: HOT DOGS and BBQ. So this is not only an Ice Cream Parlor alone, it is also a restaurant selling comfort food ss well. The windows and the restaurant inside were very clean and organized. It had a sign with the names of the 40 flavors of Hershey's Ice Cream available there. The dining area was filled mostly with mostly square tables with different color tablecloths that gave the place a joyful look and unique decor, even though they did not have many other decorations. Since it had a very long open space and plenty of tables and chairs; including a lined up line of extra chairs. Next to the ordering counter, it had a traditional Hershey's Ice Cream freezer full of all the current flavors they currently had. On the wall before the cashier counter it had a Bulletin Board for their customers and other local businesses to post their business cards. It also had some wooden shelves with homemade jams, candies, and earrings made by local artists to sell here. As soon as we were in front of the ordering counter a very friendly young lady came out to greet and welcome us, and to take and serve our order. We both ordered a waffle cone with a scoop of the Premium Gold Caramel Cheesecake Cookie Monster. Although the waffle cones didn't seem made fresh there, they were crunchy, and the ice cream was amazingly delicious. We enjoyed eating them in this relaxed and cook environment. We found that this is definitely the place to go for a good cold and sweet treat on a hot Summer day.

This ice cream parlor is decorated with old memorabilia of the past hung from its walls and some on top of its counter. Its brown carpet which is the type of square pieces put together is old and stained in several area and could use a replacement to make the place looked cleaner and more cheerful. Yet this place radiated old-fashioned charm and warm hospitality. They mainly sell hand-dipped Hershey's ice cream and classic Nathan's hot dogs. And it seems they do Birthday Parties and Sports Banquets because they had a sign on one of the walls to this effect, as well as Sports League pictures. I went with a friend of mine after visiting the Roanoke Roanoke Antique Mall, which is the largest Antique Store in the area. Two young ladies employees treated us with a smile and took our order behind the counter. They graciously allowed me to try out two flavors that I was undecided on, with tiny Spoons. My friend had a scoop of Bourbon Truffle ice cream in a waffle cone and I had a scoop of Peanut Butter Twist ice cream also in a waffle cone. The waffle cones, although not made in-house, were nice and crispy, and the ice cream was creamy and very tasty. This place clearly serves an important role in this community and brings lots of joy to all those who visit it. With the suggestions I brought up in my review, the owners can make sure it will continue to do so for years to come.

I did so after having visited it several times, having had their ice-cream and homemade cookies, and having talked to and interviewed their store employees as well as their truck driver who brings their ice-cream and cookie dough from Lynchburg, Virginia. Now that Rookie's has relocated from their Downtown Roanoke store to Cave Springs, at 3549 Electric Rd, Suite D, I have decided to visit their new location, and write an update review. I urge all the readers to this review to also go back and read my first review and accompanied photographs to learn more about the history of the company. For Rookie's is more than just an Ice Cream Parlor. It's a place where desserts and friends meet to create something memorable. Their employees are encouraged to establish conversations with their customers and answer questions about their company and their products. And their comfortable ambiance and seating area contribute to the enjoyment and extraordinary sweet dining experience while people socialize with family and friends, and share quality time with them. The new location is more family-friendly and has more parking than their previous location. The residents of Cave Springs have welcomed Rookie's with open arms and have become steady customers in a relatively short period of time. I was impressed to find out that it is located in thr same Shopping Center as Cafe Asia 2 Restaurant, one of my favorites Asian Restaurants. Rookie's continues to offer different flavors of cookies, homemade ice cream, and signature ice cream sandwiches, in a clean and simple interior design relaxing environment, and with excellent customer service from their warm, knowledgeable, and friendly staff. Today I visited the new location with a friend and both of us interacted with the servers and had ice-cream sandwiches. Mine was Mint Chocolate Chip cookies with Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. The combination of the two made the perfect sweet snack or dessert. During the time we were there chatting and enjoying our ice-cream sandwich, we saw many other customers come in and do the same. It seems that Rookie's made a great strategic move for a win win situation between the company and its customers. A quote from the owner of the community I feel best describes it best: "We believe that community is built on a foundation of celebrating something good and we believe our handcrafted ice cream sandwiches. Ice cream, cookies & milk will bring you together! We're all about the memories made and the nostalgia we hope you feel whenever you tuck in to a treat with friends and family." All of Rookie's ice cream is handcrafted in Lynchburg, and they offer vegan and gluten-free options. Rookie's hopes to continue expanding to other locations, with some customers even asking for a location in North Carolina. I highly recommend this business and its products, and consider it one of the City of Roanoke's gem.

I went in Saturday for a birthday cake my mom ordered for me last week (I'm using her account to write this because I don't have an account for this). I had the receipt on my app and pulled up the card from the link DQ sent to my phone. The first woman I spoke to was very rude and literally, her words, told me to wait because she didn't have time for me. I stood there while several other people walked in and she helped them before me (sort of -- a manager had to complete an order that this 1st woman walked away from without finishing the order). When the 1st woman finally called me up, I explained very clearly that I was there to pick up a cake that had been ordered. She said, "Wait .. you're what?" with a rude tone. I repeated myself, even saying I was sorry because maybe I didn't speak loudly or clearly enough. Again, she said, "I don't know what you want. What are you asking?" AGAIN, I repeated myself. How many times did I have to tell her I was there for a cake? I gave her my name 3 times and my mom's name 3 times to check whose name it was under. Finally, around the 4th time, she goes, "Oh, you're here for a cake? You had me all confused because that's not what you said." Are you serious?!?! She went to the back and returned with some weird green cake and someone else's name, slamming it down on the counter like she really hated her job. I told her that wasn't mine and showed her the picture from the e-mail of what my cake looked like (a pre-made DQ chocolate cake, not custom, with Happy Birthday on it). She glared at me, rolled her eyes, brought it to the back, and returned with my cake. She slammed it on the counter so hard, the lid came off and I had to struggle, without her help, to get it back on. She asked if I paid for it online. I told her I had a gift card and wasn't sure if it had been paid for (shouldn't they already know? how many people steal cakes because they don't even bother to check??). She said, "What do you mean a gift card?" I showed her the link AGAIN and she said it couldn't be used for that, then she said they don't accept gift cards. It seemed to me like she wanted me to pay for it another way so she wouldn't have to deal with entering the gift card. At this time, someone overheard and came to help her. This 2nd lady was nice but she didn't know how to enter a gift card, either. How do the employees of a DQ not know how to enter a DQ gift card? Makes no sense! After asking someone else and looking up something, she finally found it and told the 1st woman. The 1st woman entered the gift card number and gave me a snide look as she said, "It's invalid. This code isn't real," or something like that to suggest I faked something. The 2nd woman gave her kind of a side stare like she knew she was lying. The 2nd woman entered the number and WOW! Magic! It worked! I was in there for almost half an hour just to pick up a freaking cake! All because the 1st woman took people before me who came in after me and then treated me like trash pretending not to understand simple orders and pretending my gift card wasn't real. I wish I had caught her name but my mom was waiting outside and we had to hurry to get home for my birthday party before the cake melted. NEVER EVER go to this DQ!

According to their website, "Macado's started in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, in 1978 and became popular for its eclectic decor and moderately priced food, especially with the college crowd." The chain emphasizes: "a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere for a diverse clientele, including families."  Today, as I was seated in the booth the Host had brought me to and observing the Macado's logo on the paper napkin laying on my table, I thought to myself: What is the meaning of the "Just to be there" located under the restaurant's name in its logo? And I thought to myself that It's possible "Just to be there" might be a phrase associated with the feeling of camaraderie or the comfortable atmosphere that Macado's aims to provide, and thus a popular spot for people of all ages and social classes to get together, eat, socialize, and be merry. I remember the very first time I ate here. It was for a lunch invitation from a good friend of mine I hadn't seen in a while. The first impression I got of the place was amazing. I loved the building where the restaurant was housed and all the interesting decorations. It was almost completely full from the lunch crowd, yet this provided a warm and cozy feeling knowing that so many people had taken the time to come eat here even though they knew it would be crowded. I was fascinated by the large and extensive menu, and after carefully reviewing it, ordered the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Burger. It came with half a pound of meat, a soft fresh bun, and a whole bunch of krinkle fries. It was so big and delicious I can't forget how full I was when I finished eating it. Just eating there for the first time and I couldn't wait to return. I had set such high expectations of the place that many of the other times I visited the place I was disappointed. It could have been by the lack of training of the servers on the Knowledge of and explaining menu items, or by the timing on how to serve them. Or it could be by a mistake from the cook in cooking or preparing an item. Like today, I ordered Bang Bang Shrimp as an appetizer and the shrimp arrived overcooked almost to the point of burnt with the Assian Crisp Noodles a bit stale. So much so that I had to ask to see the manager to formally complain. The manager was a friendly young lady who listened to me and admitted the shrimp could have been fried before they had just changed the oil. And she came up with possible solutions to the question: "What can I do to make it right?" Of which I choose for her to not charge me for the burnt shrimp and the bad dining experience they had caused me. I went on and ate the Lone Ranger sandwich with Onion Rings that were cooked right, and because of the manager's handling of the situation in such an effective way, I am sure to return, because there is something about Macado's that makes you want to "Just to be there."

In a cute, little, Hispanic family-owned business off Williamson Road in Roanoke, Virginia, I discovered this dessert shop named "La Michoacana." Followed by the slogan "El Autentico Sabor a Mexico." (The Authentic Flavor of Mexico). And to my surprise it was like finding the gold pot at the end of the rainbow. After being awarded the NC Triad Yelp Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And La Michoacana in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. First of all, I wondered, why this name? What does it mean? "Michoacana is a lady who comes from Michoacan", the owner of the business told me. "I am a Michoacana." "I was born in Michuacan.," she continued. What is the significance of naming this business this name besides being that the owner comes from this state in Mexico? I did my research and found that Michuacan, is a state in west-central Mexico, known for its rich indigenous culture and the world's largest avocado producer. It is often called "The Soul of Mexico" due to its deep cultural heritage and vibrant traditions. The state is also famous for its carnitas, a dish of pork slow-cooked in lard; and is known as the "carnitas capital of the world." Michuacan is also considered the birthplace of paletas (Mexican popsicles). And these "paletas" imported from Mexico, together with Mexican "nieve," which is the word used in Mexico for helado or ice cream are two of the main products sold here, together with creative fruit snacks. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review for seeing is believing, and for an ice cream and dessert shop to be in business for almost 10 years now their products must be good. And I can tell you they are for I tasted them myself. As soon as I arrived, I parked my car in one of only three parking spaces in front of the store. Later I found out by the owners that they have more parking in the back of the store. A friendly lady who was the original founder and owner of the store and for whom the store was named, gave me a warm welcome after I greeted her in Spanish. Her husband of 5 years, whom she met at the store, was also there working and welcomed me. The store used to be smaller but after they married, the husband helped expand it. Many of us are familiar with American and Italian Ice Cream. I am also familiar with Caribbean Ice Cream made originally by Cuban-Chinese who afterwards moved to Puerto Rico and established their Ice cream shops there and were well known by their Creamy Tropical fruits Ice Creams such as Mango, Mamey, Guanabana, Coco, and Piña, among others. Mexican Ice cream is also unique in its very own way. I ordered a Bionico which was fresh fruits cut in pieces with a special sweet cream and granola on top. I also tried their Mango nieve (ice cream), and a Mango paleta (popsicle). They were very flavorful and with pieces of the fruit inside. I definitely highly recommend this dessert place when you feel like eating something sweet and refreshing. I found out that soon they are thinking of having crepes as well. I definitely will be returning soon for some more sweet treats and enjoyable conversation with these very pleasant couple.
