    Cookies and cream donut

This shop is not new and seems likely to continue on indefinitely. I passed through town on a football day, and thus was the only customer not decked out in the hideous burgundy regalia of Virginia's "other" university. I had time to peruse a selection of cake and yeast donuts and a few other items before settling on cookie-dusted yeast donut. It was delightfully fluffy, and I experienced no difficulty in paying for this small purchase by card and walked out without a lot of wasted packaging. I asked no more of them than this one donut, but the variety and quality would support much greater demands.

Are you an early bird and you love that fresh donut in the morning? They open at 6:30am EVERYDAY! Customer service was top notch... even at 6:30am We have heard nothing but good things about this place so I decided to try it out. Did it fill the hype? It sure did and surely bypassed it by far! I ordered a variety of random donuts which were all DELICIOUS but the ones that stood out were the white coconut, glazed and the FRESH Apple filled. By far the best in the business compared to all the famous competitors.

Easy the best traditional donuts I've had in a long time. Great spot and love the nostalgic vibe. It's simple. The staff was wicked nice as well!

A high level of intrigue based upon virtually perfect Google and Yelp reviews led me to Carol Lee Donuts. It's located in a small former gas station a few minutes off the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. A regular flow of customers in the morning were evidence of a loyal following among locals. A half dozen donuts came out to $7.50. We went with a toasted coconut, Bavarian cream, maple frosted, and a couple chocolate glazed donuts. Both the toasted coconut and chocolate glazed (3.5/5) were a bit too sweet for my tastes. I would have liked more of a crunch for both, and the toasted coconut was on a glazed donut, which I think worked against the flavor (some may like the super sweet glazed taste overpowering the coconut). My travel companion that had the maple frosted and Bavarian cream (5/5) really loved those varieties. Service was quick and friendly. While I wouldn't drive out of my way to try Carol Lee Donuts again and I feel some of the other reviews I read mentioning that they're the best donuts on the East Coast are exaggerated, it's definitely a place I'd recommend over Dunkin' for those in the Virginia Tech/Blacksburg area.

Discovered this place last year while in the area. Was back in Radford and made a point to stop by on the way home to Northern VA. The donuts are so good. The texture is similar to our favorite donut place in NYC...now that's high praise. It's a yeast donut so has a nice fluffy texture, but also enough heft to it so it doesn't feel like you're biting into a bunch of air. They have a lot of variety...the standard flavors you'd expect at a donut shop. The appearance of the shop is nothing fancy. It's a walk-in, and you order at the counter. No seating. But at a no frills place like this, you know they are focusing on what's important: the taste of the donuts/food. The young man at the register was very friendly and courteous. We purchased a dozen to take home. They are all so tasty. I ate the cinnamon sugar, toasted coconut, and the apple filled donut. They were pillowy soft and had just the right amount of sweetness. Even the apple filled donut wasn't saccharin too sweet for a filled donut. The donuts stayed soft the next day as well. They've really got the donut thing down! I'm sure we will stop by whenever in the vicinity.

Throughout my four years at Virginia Tech, I tried Carol Lee Donuts at so many residence hall events, club meetings on campus, and in classes where my professors felt extra generous. My favorite flavors from them are the blueberry, strawberry icing, as well as the double chocolate ones. Although Dunkin Donuts is right on campus, nothing compares to the fresh baked goodness from Carol Lee's. Please try this place when you get the chance!

THIS.IS.THE.BEST. I thought I had found the best donuts in our area but driving to Blacksburg, I discovered one of the best donuts on the east coast. This small stand alone shop is just down the street from the university across from some apartments. Their Social distancing setup was perfect. They had lots of staff taking orders. It was a smooth pickup process. The donuts..... they were excellent yeast and cake options. The yeast were light yet they had substance. I loved the soft and fresh tasting bites of these addicting cakes!

I have been craving Carol Lee's for so long, so I was super excited to visit again when I was in Blacksburg. It is hands down the best donut place that I've ever been to, and this time did not disappoint. My favorite flavors are the classic glazed, the toasted coconut, and the blueberry cake donut. Before your next trip, a few things to note is that the store closes for the day when they sell out, so it's best to go sometime in the morning. When I went to the store at 9 am, it was relatively busy and I ended up parking across the street. Also, the inside of the store is all a bit small with no indoor seating.

I have lived in Blacksburg my whole life and ODB has been a go-to bakery for most locals for a while. Serving a variety of pastries, cakes, breads, and offering lunch, brunch, and dinners. They have a lovely variety of options for customers to enjoy. The bakery primarily serves French pastries and caters to French cuisine at their meals. Although they offer more than just French inspired food. In the past, my family and I have enjoyed grabbing their cakes for celebrations and individual pastries from their pastries case. But recently, they have not been up to par and have left us very unsatisfied. The cakes have been dry and do not taste fresh at all. On my latest visit I tried a couple of things, all of which were cold, with dry, crumbly textures. It was evident to me that these pastries were not made day-of and had clearly sat in a fridge for at least one night (if not more). I found this to be extremely disappointing as ODB used to have a reputation of serving FRESH baked goods and pastries. I cannot attest for the hot food they serve during meal times, but the pastries and cakes have gone down hill. Over the winter break, I had their NY cheesecake bar (which I've gotten in the past and it was phenomenal) and it fell so short of what I remembered. It was lacking flavor and the crust at the bottom was dry. This past visit, I tried a Napoleon (also have had this before and really enjoyed it), a specialty cake, a scone, and a couple macarons and macaroons. The Napoleon was so cold and the puff pastry was super stale, it practically fell apart the second I tried to eat it. The specialty individual cake slice was also very cold and the cake wasn't moist at all. Again, indicating it was not fresh or made day-of. The scone was also a disappointment as it was dry and lacked any moisture. I thought the macrons and macaroons were fine though. While most of this was disappointing, the price didn't help either. Nothing was inexpensive and the quality was completely missing. So disappointing to leave this review as I used to enjoy coming here for sweet treats. It's sad to see that ODB is unfortunately not what it used to be. I will note that the service is very friendly and they do their best dealing with customers. Could have been more efficient, but I did go during a busier time. I hope they can turn things around, but until then I do not think I will be retuning soon.

I came by last Wednesday morning for a bit of caffeine and a bite to eat before my top-tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality (down the street at VA Tech) and I embarked on our road trip into Kentucky. I'm a hardcore morning person and it's often difficult to find coffee places that are open before 8am. The primary reason I came here was because they opened at 7am, well before most of the businesses in the area did. That's a point in their favor at least. And it's cute in there. Per my accompanying picture, there's a lot to take in, with tons of items on the walls and on display, and I needed a solid minute or two just to look over the large menu, which featured a lot of different types of coffees/lattes, as well as a significant number of Middle Eastern influenced snacks and pastries. I literally got over there just as the doors opened (promptly right before 7), so I had the run of the place for my short time in there; I have no doubt this place is hopping when students are actually on campus and don't feel like frequenting the obligatory Starbucks for whatever reason. Maybe it's just a personal palate issue but I didn't like anything I had. Since this was a very specific type of coffee establishment, I tried the Turkish Coffee. That one for sure just wasn't my speed - it's a super tiny portion, pretty much akin to a shot or two of espresso, and aside from the first two or three sips, was literally just grounds. My gut says that's just how Turkish Coffee is, and I won't be sampling that again anywhere. I did see some intriguing lattes including one of my all-time chums Rose, so that was probably the call in hindsight. I also selected two food items, both of which were also unfortunately misses for me. One was the baklava, a pastry I'm very familiar with and tend to really like. This was, I'm sad to say, the worst I've had. The biggest issue is that you can barely taste the main ingredients, namely the pistachio and honey. You know what you can taste, see and feel on your tongue though? Sugar. Lots of sugar. For some bizarre reason, they make their baklava here with a layer of this crystallized sugar. I don't know why, but it honestly ruins the item and drowns out the actual flavors you should be tasting. Arguably an easy fix, but I only took a few bites of it. I also got a Lebanese puff pastry, which looked intriguing but just didn't have much of a flavor. This was my first time trying it, so maybe it's supposed to be on the blander side for whatever reason, but it mostly just tasted like dough to me, especially the areas closer to the edge (not all that dissimilar in my experience from a croissant). The service was fine; there was just the one young woman behind the counter opening up for the day, and everything I ordered was provided within a few minutes. I got two coffees (a "normal" one for my chum as well), and the two pastries, which came to close to $30. I think that's a little pricy, especially for a place right off of a college campus, but your mileage may vary. Normally I'd recommend avoiding an establishment where I literally didn't like anything, but my gut says it's still worth stopping by. Just don't get what I got.

But above and beyond their Middle Eastern pastries and unique drinks like Turkish Coffee and Mango Madness, it is an inviting environment with comfortable tables, chairs, and couches, to spend quality time socializing with good friends or with a laptop connected to the internet with their Wi-Fi, doing research for that special project. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Halwa Bakery & Cafe is the perfect example. After having dinner with a friend at another restaurant, we decided to come here for dessert. When we arrived, it was easy to find a parking space right around the corner of the Cafe. The place had outdoor furniture to be able to enjoy your food and drink outdoors in nice weather. Inside, the beautiful hardwood floors and exposed ceilings, together with the unique lighting treatment, gave special character to the place, and providing an extraordinary environment in which to better enjoy the moment. On the left of the ordering counter there is a couple of large blackboards with the menu written on them in color chalk. On the right, there are several display cases with Sandwiches and Pastries for one to observe and make better choices. My friend ordered a Baklava Cheesecake and I ordered a Peanut Butter Special Cake. As we sat down enjoying our desserts, that were amazingly delicious, the place was full of people. Some working on their laptops, others socializing, and others simply enjoying their food and drinks. As we were leaving, I saw on one of the walls two framed newspaper articles from The Roanoke Times, with color photographs, on this Blacksburg bakery with Mediterranean pastries. I highly recommend this place as a perfect environment to enjoy some cultural food and drinks, either alone, with your laptop, or with good friends.

I was also a bit surprised that the cinnamon rolls their website promised didn't seem to be there, though a few other intriguing baked goods were on sale. Ultimately, I took some mouthwatering rosemary and sundried tomato bagels along with some plain ones for comparison, as well as a chocolate babka cake. The bagels had that bit of sourness that makes them worthwhile, and a nice bit of browning.
