It's usually around £6.50 for all you can eat Chinese (changes depending what time you go, happy hour etc) so you can't complain about that! Last year when I went in a few times the staff were very miserable and stuff but now I think they must of been taken over by someone else because the staff seem to be alright now and they smile when you walk in etc, there's one waiter there who I think is either Spanish or Italian who is absolutely hilarious, jokes on with me and all my friends everytime we go in which always lightens up the meal. The food is absolutely lovely, you've got to try their seaweed and their spare ribs lush! Only problems are the pricey drinks but I suppose that's how every restaurant with fairly cheap food makes the money, oh and if you want water make sure you explicitly ask for the tap water (unless you only drink bottled for whatever reason) otherwise you'll end up with a nasty surprise on your bill, but I suppose that's like most places aswell. I asked if they provided free water like most places, the waitress said yes so I asked for some and she brought a jug with lots of glasses over for me and all of my friends, got the bill at the end of the meal and they tried to charge us for it which we wouldn't pay obviously because we asked for the free water, not the bottled but they didn't challenge us about it and deducted the water from the bill and everything was alright. It happened another time but when they brought it over I asked to make sure it was the tap water, it wasn't but the waiter said it was his first day and he didn't realise that they'd charge us for the bottled water as it was the only one he could see and told us to keep it and he'd just take it off the bill! - All in all: very nice food, good prices, new staff are very friendly, lovely location, just be careful with the drinks. read more

Visited here for a friend's wedding anniversary after a member of our party had visited on several occasions and really enjoyed it. We were sat at a nice table after a short wait in the bar area although we hadn't booked. We ordered our drinks and took full advantage of the buffet style food. Everything was going well until we ordered a second round of drinks and one of our party noticed something floating in his pint. On approaching the manager to ask to exchange the drink he was faced with an obnoxious angry man who stated that it would not have been one of his staff who had put something in the drink which made no sense at all as the drink had just arrived at the table and no one in our party had touched it. All we had really wanted was fresh drink which the manager was not prepared to give and in fact made quite a scene! A doorman did approach the table and gave us a fresh drink but by then we were all very embarrassed and the night had been totally spoilt. On leaving the restaurant I did ask to speak to the manager again just to state we had enjoyed the food but thought he could have been a bit more polite about the drink incident. However, I was faced with a tirade of abuse. This man has not got a clue about good customer service or indeed any manners at all and as a result he has lost the custom of the whole of our party some of which ere regulars. read more

Inshanghai is the worst place Ive ever eaten. The manager is unbelievably rude, obnoxious and aggressive. He has no people skills whatsoever and is extremely argumentative. The rest of the staff ignore you if you speak to them, I wonder if they are actually scared to say anything in case their overbearing boss shouts at them. Any families with children are kept out of sight in the darkest recesses of the restaurant. There are lots of rules and regulations that customers have to abide by, but this restaurant does not abide by the simplest of food hygiene regulations; food on the hot buffet is anything but!! lukewarm rice and chicken is a recipe for illness. I tried to draw the manager's attention to the temperature of the food and he just said 'well, you dont have to have it, do you?' I told him I wasnt happy with this and he told us to leave! Any normal person would have apologised and rectified the problem and that would have been that. Instead he created a huge confrontation which showed everyone in there just how little their customers mean to them. I will happily tell anyone to avoid this horrible little place and it's shocking manager. there's much better places to spend your hard earned money, who will treat you as a customer and not as something that the cat dragged in. read more

Started out ok, food was ok and the place was nice. partway though the meal we asked for tap water and received bottled water so at the end we were charged for that and they wouldn't offer student discount since we didn't ask for the discount before the meal! Though both could be considered honest mistakes, there was limited notice that the discount has to be mentioned before the meal (aside from the notice by the till! it's apparently mentioned in the menus but they are not used for the buffet) and although politely requested, the staff would not offer the discount and then almost went on a rampage about how everyone seems to ask at the end (maybe they should take a hint) and continued to subtlety blame us (or students in general) for this mistake. Overall the restaurant was fine, but the staff/manager? at the end were unnecessarily rude over a simple question which pretty much ruined the experience. read more

Food great... Waitresses fantastic... Manager 'a complete cretin' If you want a nice meal topped by great service served with a large portion of inhospitable foul language... Inshanghai is the place for you. Never have i suffered such a hostile unreasonable and foul mouthed response from a manager in my life. The sentence "if you dont like it you can leave I cant be doing with this s**t" was growled through gritted teeth in full earshot of my 7 year old son, my 2 year old nephew and my 11 year old niece. He then proceeded to take out his frustrations on the two waitresses who were serving us... who were the only thing keeping me from walking out. Durham is full of dining options and with such a complete arrogant scumbag like this in charge... Im sure Inshanghai wont outlast its competitors. InShangai is a lovely place to eat at, the food is amazing, the manager could brighten up and be much more pleasant instead of rude but overall I love it. I would definitely come again but I believe that it can get boring as it is the same food day after day and it could have a change once in a while. The good things about the restaurant: amazing food, not too bad prices and waiters are friendly although the bad things are: grumpy manager, can get boring and the queue is always coming out of the door. I would give it a 7 out of 10! read more

Had lunch there 21/11/2010. Reasonable price but food preparation in low to poor quality in terms of preparation. Other diners have complained of too much salt, I think too much MSG. Avoid the jasmine tea! We were told it was slow release in terms of flavour but in all the time we were eating it was still just hot water. To be fair after pointing this out they did not charge us for the "tea". Perhaps they could serve some real Chinese tea and save themselves some embarrassment. Dine there again? No. Recommend? Went this evening after 7 so we had grand buffet, they were really busy but very pleasant doorman took our details told us there was 20 min wait but to sit in the bar, we were shown a table about 25 mins later at the rear of restaurant, this is the area usually reserved for private parties but they had opened it up because they were so busy and they weren't ushering folk out. Choice of food was fine food was plentiful and tasty and ALL the staff were polite and helpful. read more

Now under new management Inshanghai is now a great place to eat. No more grumpy staff. The place is always spotless and the new range of desserts they now provide make the experience. The food is always tasty and the bar always well stocked with new and interesting drinks. read more
