In a pinch was looking for a little getaway for my wife and I ... not far from home in Richmond but…read morenot too far either. Its a little confusing finding their options using anything except their site directly (vaideninn.com) so GO there instead of anything else. I called and talked to Jess, that was the easiest to do. Booking was done with a link provided over email (but still definitely secure) - frankly, i have spent enough $ thru airbnb and other sites to be happy and book direct. We went with the king bedroom that had a private bath (our one real requirement) and the price is just right too I am rather amazed at how very few reviews there are for this place; I didn't realize that there are quite a few weddings and family reunions that are held nearby. The Vaiden has plenty of southern charm, historic details and quite t jj old feel with modern updates. I've attached a pile of photos to give you a sense of most all of the place. There are areas to be updated, but really didn't notice almost any of it until real close looking around....regardless, what did you expect for a house from the 1780s? Upstairs, to the far right is the smaller room that has I think a full size bed and no private bath. The door to its left is the king size bedroom with a dedicated private bathroom (w shower). To the left, is the two bedroom suite, including a larger bathroom with a clawfoot tub (can be used as shower). Outside the bedrooms is a large sitting area, with a couch and two comfortable chairs; in addition, there is a Keurig with plenty of options and a water tank. Downstairs, there is a large shared sitting area with a few couches immediately to the right of the entry. Off this room, is the kitchenette and a full bathroom with shower. Right in front upon entry is the dining area which has an area for another Keurig and again, there are plenty of options for coffee, tea, etc. To the right of the dining area is the final bedroom suite which I don't recall if was a two bedroom or not, but she did show us a second room with one or two smaller beds and if I recall, a full bathroom. Beyond that, there is a full long kitchen which I think is available when you rent the entire house. The housekeeper (Bonnie) has room beyond that We didn't need a lot of things to do - just a few options nearby. So if wine is your thing, there are least two nearby. Saude Creek vineyards (which we went to) had an amazing musician and good wine (not sweet enough for our tastes except their Muscadine - unavailable though) along with a food truck. There was another winery and brewery in the other direction. If you like casinos, Colonial Downs (Rosie's) is not far at all, but if you've been there, hit I-64 east and you will see another Rosie's but if you want something else, go an hour to Rivers Casino (we went here - talk about packed!). There's also Williamsburg not far away any which has quite its own set of options, including history and restaurants (checkout St George's if you want seafood buffet) and a little stretch of antique shopping. We probably would have done that the following day if it didn't go all rainy :( Bonnie was charming and a joy to talk with towards the end of breakfast. She gave us a nice tour, talked about the house and the area. I didn't mention it before but when booking with Jess, she mentioned and recommended highly the Martha's Kitchen restaurant. I booked a reservation online just in case but that's another review (). Great little getaway spot!!!! Very recommended.

Tammy greeted me at the front porch upon check-in Friday afternoon and immediately I felt right at home with her. We chatted for a while and she told me about a few places to see in town and gave me a few dinner options. I met another couple staying the weekend and chatted with them and Tammy gave me a tour of the property and a few brochures. My room, the Virginia Wilson, was adorable and cozy with red and wood hues, a comfy bed, and corner bookcases. Ah, adorable! I had dinner at The Shanty and walked around the town into the shops where everyone was just as friendly as Tammy had been. I returned to the inn to relax and bumped into Tammy and her husband, Jim, while getting something to drink at the little kitchenette space for guests which has an ice machine, wine, soft drinks, water, tea, etc. We chatted for a while and they suggested a few movies from their DVD collection for the evening. The next morning breakfast was served promptly at 0830 to all 7 guests (8 is the max for the inn but since I was a single there were only 7) and we enjoyed a warm egg soufflé (YUM) with some homemade salsa and jams and fresh fruits and orange juice, coffee and teas. Tammy and Jim talked to us and we all made pleasant conversation together about plans for the day and suggestions. I had planned to drive to Chincoteague but decided instead to explore the town, shop, walk the beach, have some brown dog ice cream (it's the best, really) and lay out on the porch to read a book. Tammy and Jim had to leave for a reunion so Erica, another innkeeper was there, she's younger and super friendly. She welcomed me back in the afternoon after my walk and spent a little time talking with me on the front porch. I then napped and read a book for a few hours before walking to the beach, taking photos, and listening to live music in the park right behind the inn. Jim had left folding chairs out for us. I spent my second night reading on the screened porch and met the neighbor who came to make sure everything was OK since Tammy and Jim were away for the night. Erica returned early in the morning and served us all ooey gooey French toast with fresh berries and bacon. Yum! Again, we had a pleasant conversation at the table of seven with four new guests from the day before and three of us who already knew one another. The location is excellent - it's right on the corner of Tazwell and Peach and you can easily walk to all the shops and dining (5-10 minutes) and the beach (5 mins). The big park is also right behind the inn and you can walk in the lovely gazebo or under the vined lattice awnings carefully kept by the garden ladies of the town. I loved it. I didn't have to start my car once the entire weekend. I am charmed by both Cape Charles and Bay Haven, which truly was a haven for me when I needed a weekend to recharge my batteries, I can't wait to come back again!

Upon check-in, we were told we needed to put a card on file--which was expected--but then were informed of a $130 hold being placed on it. This was never mentioned during booking, and our room had already been paid in full. Once we got to our room (after needing our key cards reactivated three separate times), we discovered the AC was barely working. I reported it to the front desk and was told to "wait until night" to see if it improved. It didn't. The pull-out couch was incredibly uncomfortable--thin padding with metal bars digging into your back all night. We also had to call maintenance because the toilet wouldn't flush. Turns out, it needed to be rebuilt. WiFi was another issue. It only worked if you were standing right by the door. Anywhere else in the room? Zero signal. While the staff were friendly and the pool was nice, the splash pad area was shut down for the first day and a half of our stay. Everything around the resort felt like it was "off-season" despite being the middle of summer. The putt-putt course was completely unmanaged, several buildings on the property were visibly falling apart, and the onsite restaurant was closed. Breakfast was underwhelming and overcrowded. It seemed like anyone could just walk in and eat--even people not staying at the hotel--which added to the chaos. The website also advertised golf, but there was zero mention or sign of it during our entire stay. For the price we paid and the additional resort fees, we expected much more. Unless those fees actually go toward providing a fun and well-maintained experience for families, I wouldn't stay here again.

The room we're staying in is really run down. Didn't look like anyone cleaned the room, the tub has a HUGE disgusting stain on it, there were flies and a BIG OL SPIDER. Unfortunately we don't have anywhere else to go since we already paid. We had no choice but to go get a bottle of lysol and disinfect the whole entire room. If the room wasn't bad enough, on their website it said they had a pool and free continental breakfast but I was just informed that the pool wouldn't be opening until some time in June (it's literally memorial weekend so it's crazy that it's not open) and they don't have the continental breakfast until some time in June as well. This is FALSE ADVERTISEMENT. If they only have breakfast during certain times of the year then say that on your website. If the pool isn't opening memorial weekend like 99% of other hotels do, then say that! Don't waste your time at this place. I'm sure there are other better hotel/motels to stay at around here.

The choices were camping or staying at a hotel. I didn't feel like loading my car up with camping, fishing and trade-show stuff, so I checked Yelp for reviews. Sunset Resort didn't have anything available, but the Kiptopeke Inn had plenty of rooms open and was comparably priced. The rooms face outside, and my first impression was, hey this is where Earl (My Name is Earl) lives! The room had an identical set up. Tip: Be sure to fully close your curtains or what happens in your room is there for all to see. Nothing special about the room other than there is no bedside clock. I had my cell phone, but it is always nice to wake up, roll over and see the time without having to pick your phone up. There is a microwave and a fridge in there. Flat screen TV, although it is satellite TV, so the channels are limited and some are kinda fuzzy. No plates, napkins or utensils in the room. The pool looked nice, I didn't swim, but it was nicely lit at night. So why the two stars? Well, first of all, this is a $70 per night hotel. I paid (with fees and taxes) ~$150. The breakfast buffet is woeful. Several mini bagels, a few pastries, some mini muffins in plastic and not much else. Yeah, there was coffee and juice, but the cups aren't much bigger than shot glasses. I overheard some other guests say the hotel wasn't ready for prime time and that they had no hot water in their shower. At least mine was ok! After I was out fishing all day, I came back to take a shower and found although my bed was made, they hadn't replenished the tiny shampoos. After my shower I went down to the front desk to get one so I would be able to wash my hair in the morning. They were out of them (which is probably why they didn't resupply my room). To their credit, I found two shampoo containers outside of my room in the morning. So, overall, if this had been a $70 per night place, 4 stars, because my expectations would have been in line with the price (value). But given how short they fell compared to a Marriott at the same price, there is work to be done. I wouldn't dream of staying here again at the current price.
