We have a 6 week old baby and it's so nice when staff are understanding of the difficulties faced at times with a newborn. The staff seated us next the fire so that we were warm and away from drafts. The food is wholesome but doesn't really rock the tastebuds. My starter of breaded Brie was done well and Hubby's lentil soup was piping hot (a must for soup!). Both were palatable and enjoyable. I opted for lasagne which was served with salad and chips. It almost reminded me of a school lunch in that it was comforting. Hubby's burger was well seasoned and quite tasty! Dessert was homemade profiteroles in chocolate sauce. It was tasty but didn't rock the tastebuds. It's a little out the way from Glasgow as it's just outside of Kilwinning. However there's a good sized car park and the staff are simply lovely. Great value for money in that we both had 3 courses and a few non alcoholic drinks for the grand total of £25. All in all we were happy with the meal and the staff made it even better.

Buying a bow, arrows, and target is less expensive than that!!! I made my money's worth, as I made the record for the week, but still, $500 is way too much. Besides that, beautiful rooms, scenery, and food. My favorite part was the breakfast buffet. I had the best smoked salmon I've ever had. I would recommend you only come if you're willing to blow a few thousand dollars.

They have a main restaurant and also a little bistro in a separate onsite building, called The Potting Shed. We ate in the bistro. Food was incredibly good. The outdoor grounds provide a peaceful place to walk -- and the flowing river is just 100 yard down a short hill. The real star is the Bistro restaurant next door which turned out to be our best meal during our two week tour of the UK. Only reason we wound up there is because they were full at the main hotel "fancy" restaurant - the the desk manager steered us to The Potting Shed. Chef was Polish and is certainly going places -- as for VERY reasonable prices we got amazing, beautiful dishes like Beet Root, Parsnip Fritters, Chicken wrapped in Parma Ham, Fish and Chips, Lamb, and the most wonderful Bread and Butter Pudding for desert. Atmosphere was rustic and charming -- sit on the small covered patio for that view. Would HIGHLY recommend if you are anywhere near this area -- it's worth a special trip just to see the Peacocks parading on the lawn.
Friars Wynd

I'll be honest, I was puzzled by the location of this boutique hotel and wine bar. Having lived in…read moreStirling for five and a bit years, I knew that Friars Street was the street which students ascended/descended to reach either the club on the street at the bottom or the club at the street at the top. After all, I was a Stirling student for four years - a reasonably well-behaved one! - and had seen firsthand the havoc that takes over Friars street in the wee hours. So, I was a little perplexed that they'd picked such a central location for the hotel, all things considered. And, not long after Friars Wynd had opened its doors, there was a deadly attack on the street. Jeez. Forgetting the location, Friars Wynd is completely different from its much-loved predecessor, The Junk Rooms. And they have done such a good job of making the place look so fresh and bright. There's a lovely bar in the corner and ample room for seating, and a selection of fresh cakes displayed by the window. You can tell instantly that Friars Wynd is worthy of the 'Boutique hotel' title because it feels so luxurious from the moment you step inside. And if the rooms are adequately soundproofed then I'm sure a night's stay would be a blissful one. I've had both lunch and drinks at Friars Wynd and I was impressed by both. The owner is a really lovely, passionate lady who, on both my visits, welcomed me and even remembered me the second time. Lunch was delicious and it was just the spot for the kind of evening drink we were after. My only comment would be that some background music would really do good in creating even more of an atmosphere, especially in the evenings. I do know that the owner is looking to branch out to live music and jazz would be just perfect for Friars Wynd! I do hope Friars Wynd grows, because they've got just the right attitude for a new business; in aiming to impress absolutely everyone that comes through their doors.

In the back and beyond of sterling in search of an elusive breakfast we stumble upon what is apparently the only place that seems to realise that people want to eat before 10am. We came in and both ordered the full Scottish breakfast and wow was it worth it. Locally sourced meats and cooked to perfection. My only slight down point is my tattie scone was a little hard for my liking however the other half likes hers hard enough to hit a nail with so I won't mark them down for this. The food was freshly cooked and bacon was crispy. Coffee was nice and well made. The service was impeccable. While we were in another customer came in and asked for something off the menu and it was instantly accommodated. If I could give 6 stars I would.
Red Lion Inn
During our recent Scotland vacation, I decided to stay here for the novelty of staying at a Pub…read morewhich is also an Inn. Having expected a dirty cramped room and lousy service I was overwhelmingly pleased at being dead wrong. The Inn is owned by a older Scottish couple who were quite spunky. The wife services the bar / restaurant in the evening and the husband in the mornings. They make all of the food from scratch and it is proper Scottish food. I'd got a red tartan hat in Edinburgh and the man teased me a bit to make sure I understood what it was before complementing me on it. They simply could not have been nicer. One odd thing is that in early to mid day you have to walk through the pub to get to the stairs to go up to the room. This is clearly the best local watering hole as all of the locals in the teensy town of Doune were there. They helped us get in and offered to take our bags up for us along with opening the door and all moving. The Scott's really do have a way with hospitality. Now the room was great. The bed was comfy and there was very little to no noise at all despite a pub being below us. The dinner and breakfasts there were also top notch all local made on the spot style. Bonus: This place is a five minute walk from Doune Castle, which was the castle used for every single Monty Python and the Holy Grail castle scene.

The entrance very confusing. The restaurant was lovely but some staff more attentive than others. We asked for the bill twice before having to go up ourselves. The portion size was out of proportion e.g. my husband had loads of hummus left because he only received a few crackers. The leisure facilities had no staff there - you were left to your own devices to find out how everything worked. The lockers were complicated - again signage very poor. Nothing flowed properly. Quite disappointing really. We got this as a gift - not sure if I'd go out of my way to return.

Service upon arrival was fantastic and and were quickly checked in and given directions to our room (thank goodness!) The room was spacious and had its own sauna which was super cool. Each room had a balcony and the shower/sinks had an interesting layout without a door, but somehow fitted well with the design of the room. It was quite rustic in terms of design and I've rated one less star because the room was dusty (I pulled up the blind and heaps of dust fell on me) and the walls appear to be paper thin (10pm and I could hear conversations through the wall and children carrying on in the hallway). The views from the room look directly over the lake and mountains in the background which was utterly breathtaking. So onto food. We were seated by the window with great views of the lake again. Service was prompt and friendly which was lovely. For starters: bread with oil and balsamic, and scallops with black pudding. Both pretty good and the scallops were cooked well. Mains: beef burger and the rib eye cooked rare. Again, both good, not amazing though. Dessert was the peanut butter parfait which was clumsily plated but tasted good. Overall it was... good. There was really nothing that stood out or wowed me though. Breakfast the following day was good, we had the classic Scottish breakfast which was hot and tasted good, but again nothing remarkable. Overall a lovely stay due to the views of the lake. It was generally peaceful and relaxing and a really great gift idea.
