They could possibly go up market a bit with the food, and might get more locals coming out for an evening meal it could be they don't bother because its so cheap ! In otehr words, maybe counter - productive. But what a let down at breakfast. Not many hotels do a hot buffet successfully and this was one of the worst. Too much bacon in the tray meant all the stuff on top was cold, and its was poorly cooked , anaemic, fat not cooked at all , and also horrid sausages, which seemd to have no meat content, and be primarily filler and monosodium glutamate. Egg was gelatinous scrambled stuff. I realised too late that a fried egg was possible only to special order, but then it would have been a wait , and I already had a plateful of stuff. Why didnt the breakfast receptionist mention fried eggs were available ? The fried bread was also the worst ever, the crust around it was so solid it couldnt be cut without the table shaking so then your coffee (mediocre) spills over . What a pity , a good breakfast would have meant a 5 star rating. I can barely bring myself to score it with 3 stars

What I will say is that the hotel has fabulous wedding facilities. Getting a taxi was a problem for some of the guests who stayed late. That should be kept in mind if one is planning to not drive.

I have never stayed here so wouldn't dare comment on the rooms or the service and so this review is off the bar alone, which itself is pretty good - small quiet and cosy, with an excellent beer garden. The Bothwell Hotel is a real homing point come a sunny day. Literally everyone ends up here, drinking cider on the grass, swatting away the bees and wondering how on earth we can be bothered with the wind and the rain we are normally lumbered with here in Glasgow. It's been here for years too which gives it a real sense of itself. It was formally known as the Country Club - most people, including myself, still call it this.

They told us where to place the our luggage, and its do-it-yourself, thus that room was a mess. Luggage all over the place, not utilizing the space efficiently. The hotel only had one working elevator and each can only fit 3 to 4 adults at a time. It was a challenge trying to use the elevator to go up and down, hopefully the other elevator has been fixed by now. The room was ok, we had two issues. Hotel WIFI - slower than a turtle... felt like we were using dialup service. Not sure if this was done on purpose or what, but they need to upgrade their wifi system. Room Layout - we had on full size bed and one sofa bed. When you expend the sofa bed out, it blocks the other folks using the other bed from accessing the restroom. They should flip this, so the sofa bed is by the window and the full size bed on the other side. Free breakfast & friendly staff.

Front desk was very friendly staff and very accommodating, had to use room key for lift (elevator) - staff jumped in to show me. Room not large but great for wife and self, very clean, nice little TV, not hear for glob tube anyway. Went out about 2100 (9ish PM) for a snack (no idea where to go), front desk man told me Pizza place next door, sure enough there was a little Italian restaurant, order pizza to go and grabbed a half pint cold Italian ale, all for less then £20, great experience, breakfast in the morning (included with room). Our room was next to a door that was banging since early in the morning. The worst part was waking up with the fire alarm. We had to evacuate the building twice in a 10 minute slot, learning afterwards the fire alarm was caused by a shower in one of the rooms. Staff apologised for it, but I would have expected some kind of compensation for the inconvenience.

The food is not terrific, and tends to be a bit variable in quality (roast potatoes not roasted etc.) However while the staff are pleasant enough, I have to say that the actual hotel accommodation is not very good at all. When I stayed there I was given a room with only one working light. I then decided to take a shower, but the shower came apart in my hands. All in all, not good enough.

The wedding was beautiful - the ceremony and reception were held in the same room. The food was delicious - I had the beef. Sticky toffee pudding for dessert - heavenly. Only bad part was the dance floor was quite small and the stage could only hold a band of four. We were so spoiled by the hotel - really comfortable and relaxing. You can also use a gym nearby for £5 a day - I didn't but I probably needed to after all the delicious food I ate here. Highly recommended for a stay or any function!

The Less-than-Good: - A shower that had a) barely found lukewarm (let alone hot), and b) was about as powerful as a sloth taking a piss. - Wi-fi only available in the breakfast room. - Wi-fi seemingly not available at all on laptops. - No TV remote. - A fire alarm that goes off at 5am 3 out of 6 nights (50% of the time, it works everytime!) - Need to leave your key at reception whenever you leave, meaning a lenghty wait for it back if the receptionist has taken a walk or there are other folk checking in. - 30% of plug sockets out of order. A decent price for anyone spending a night in the city, but for stays any longer than a couple of nights, invest a little more. Not really worth paying for everything that was wrong with it.

HOWEVER, the room-maximum rule is STRICTLY enforced. We were trying to fit 7 people into the 5-person suite and through the whole process with getting the key from reception each time we were found out (even though it was a different person at reception, so they must keep note of who the guests are when they check in). We were told the extra people could not stay so we had to find extra accommodations on a weekend in Glasgow where literally every hostel was booked. This is forgivable, because I'm sure they have lots of people trying to fit as many people into the cheap rooms in order to save money. In all other aspects, they were extremely hospitable: they allowed us to check in early and keep our luggage in the building after we checked out. It would have just been nice to know how strict they are on the room occupancy beforehand.
