I confess that I have not stayed in a Youth Hostel for many years - about the same length of time…read moresince I last considered myself to inhabit the 'youth' category in fact - but in looking for venues to host a small conference, I came across the Stirling hostel, which turned out to be the perfect solution. Located just down from the castle in the heart of the town, the hostel was built in 1994 behind the façade of an 1826 church, so the facilities are in reasonably good order throughout. They have a good selection of private en-suite rooms (mostly twins), and a licensed kitchen where you can pre-order breakfast and evening meals. There's a good DIY kitchen area too, and common areas to chill out in, with TV and free Wi-Fi (although I could never get that to work). The location is just dripping with history - a huge monument out front marks the site of the original church and the grave of Rev. Ebenezer Erskine, leader of the Secessionist movement in 1733 that split from the Church of Scotland and eventually became the Presbyterian Church. The grounds still have plenty of interesting gravestones around, and I suspect that some of these denizens may still inhabit the darker corners of the hostel..! The conference room accommodates up to 30 people and comes with tables, chairs, a screen and flip-boards (you'll need to provide your own projector); we had exclusive use of this room and were able to lock it when not in use so our equipment was secure. It's a hostel, so you can't expect hotel standards of accommodation of course; however it's a lot better than many student halls that I've stayed in at other conferences, and very reasonably priced too, even if you're not a member of SYHA.

The outside of the building is a bit scary and unwelcoming. I'm glad we canceled but they should really reimburse us and adjust their advertising on the Booking App.

We meant to only be here for a night but after the first night we fell in love with its charm and booked it for two more nights! There are quirky little William Wallace details strewn about the hostel. Whether in the logo or the signs warning you to wash your dishes before you feel the wrath of the lightning bolts from his arse, Wallace is well represented. The common room is chalk full of games, seats, tables, and usually people! There are a few outlets and extension chords allotted for the common room. WiFi is provided and they even have a Wii! It has a great community vibe and everyone hangs out together in the common area. I do have to warn you that this does make the Wi-Fi pretty slow so if you are antisocial and like to immerse yourself in the interwebs, such as ourselves, this may be an issue! The kitchen is fully stocked although does seem to lack a bit in space to keep your perishables. The refrigerator was packed! They even supply you with a small spice rack which is nice as most hostels are not this considerate. People seem to rotate pretty casually from the kitchen and there didn't appear to be any type of rush hour, which was a nice change of pace. The bedrooms are relatively quiet which is a rarity for hostels! The beds are comfortable enough and linen is provided. My only complaint is the lack of outlets! There appeared to be only two for the entire room. Luckily my bunk was right next to one! ;) My main issue was that our bedroom, room 1, is very close to the outside main street. There is a lot of bar activity in the area and each night we would be woken up somewhere between 1-3am by yelling. The first night it was just yelling and laughter, the second night sounded like a fight and we believe someone got hit by a car, and on the final night it appears that the entire bar decided to form a choir and belt out 'Bohemian Rhapsody' at the top of their lungs. While the third night was a bit entertaining, in general this noise really put a damper on our stay here. There are lockers available but they are pretty much only big enough for your wallet so everyone just leaves their stuff on their bunks. If you are paranoid, such as myself, about leaving your stuff about they do allow you to keep it behind the reception desk. The bathrooms are gender neutral and have mixed showers which was a nice touch. I really hate gender divided sleeping and bathing quarters. However, if you don't like mixed rooms this may not be a positive for you. The entire hostel was very clean without seeming like a hotel. The paint is warm, colorful, and welcoming. Almost feels like the building is giving you a hug! The staff were all very kind and helpful. It was nice how they seemed like any other hostel traveler as they hung out in the common room and cooked alongside us during their off time. They were all very approachable! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here in Stirling and that was greatly due to the Willy Wallace Hostel. We will certainly recommend and would stay again shall we ever return.

Also late check-in (till 12:30am) makes it a great spot for travelers. Kitchen is quite well stuffed and you should not have any troubles preparing any kind of meal you imagine. Location of the hostel itself is very convenient - just on the main street in Pitlochry, very easy to find. They have their own parking lot if you're planning to come by car. It is also possible to get a private room there. The pricing is quite moderate, so it is quite a competition the all B&Bs in the area.

I'd been to the sister hostel in Inverness (…read morehttp://www.yelp.com/biz/inverness-student-hotel-inverness ) and even saw a same staff person here, so I knew what to expect. Unlike my time at the Inverness hostel, this hostel wasn't fully booked which made a world of difference. A £10 key deposit or photo ID is required. Best to leave an ID that is NOT your passport. There were only two other girls staying in the all female dorm so plenty of space to spread out your stuff. No lockers in the room, however you can lock up your valuables for free at the reception desk. Each bed had two pillows, which was greatly appreciated. The common room/dining room with the pool table is a great place to meet people and chill out. I even bumped into a couple German girls I met at a hostel in Fort William. It was noisy the two nights I was there which is generally not a big problem for me. But after a day of hiking (some of it in the rain), I just wanted a quiet evening. The wi-fi didn't work in the dorm rooms so I had to be in the common room to use internet. There was a TV lounge room where you could get wi-fi signal; but the one time I was there, a couple was watching a movie. Showers for the dorm rooms were on the small side, and there was no place to change your clothes. Free coffee and tea as seen in hostels in England, Scotland, Ireland. Kitchen was properly stocked with pans, pots, cooking utensils, oil, salt, and the ever so useful "free food" section. Location was awesome, in the town center near The Co-operative Food market and bus stop. Overall, great place to stay while hiking and exploring Pitlochry, Scotland.

The building is old and very creaky with every step someone takes. Doors slam at all hours. I could hear someone snoring so loudly from next door the last two nights. It would be nice if halls lights dimmed at night so that when people come in at 4am it isn't so bright. Take earplugs and an eye mask. I mean, there is nothing staff can do about the many guests always coming through. It's just if you want a good night's sleep I wouldn't stay here. The showers are fine, hot water and mostly clean. There were contacts in one of the showers for four days so I don't know often they are cleaned. But I felt very safe and the location cannot be beat. Lots of great activities offered.
