Well, it wasn't. I got nervous, did not eat it and asked to see the ingredients- which were a giant powdered jar of brown sauce- 4th ingredient or so was what we are allergic to. Also, we had a nut allergy on our trip- what did they serve her? Nut roll. The food was not very good, even for those who could eat it. I'd avoid this place unless you're on a very tight budget.

What a crazy ceremony, but entertaining and extra fun because I'd never tried haggis (which was just fine, I might add). Admittedly, I had to seriously concentrate to understand what the Chairman was saying, most obviously because I'm Canadian and to me his Scottish accent was really thick. I still thought he sounded fantastic and it just added to the evening. My spouse was one of a few chosen in the restaurant to participate in the program, which made for some extra laughs. In otehr words, maybe counter - productive. But what a let down at breakfast. Not many hotels do a hot buffet successfully and this was one of the worst. Too much bacon in the tray meant all the stuff on top was cold, and its was poorly cooked , anaemic, fat not cooked at all , and also horrid sausages, which seemd to have no meat content, and be primarily filler and monosodium glutamate. Egg was gelatinous scrambled stuff. I realised too late that a fried egg was possible only to special order, but then it would have been a wait , and I already had a plateful of stuff. Why didnt the breakfast receptionist mention fried eggs were available ? The fried bread was also the worst ever, the crust around it was so solid it couldnt be cut without the table shaking so then your coffee (mediocre) spills over . What a pity , a good breakfast would have meant a 5 star rating. I can barely bring myself to score it with 3 stars

Smith's is the only hotel in the centre of Kirkintilloch. It was refurbed quite extensively a few…read moreyears ago, and is popular as a functions type venue. The food is not terrific, and tends to be a bit variable in quality (roast potatoes not roasted etc.) However while the staff are pleasant enough, I have to say that the actual hotel accommodation is not very good at all. When I stayed there I was given a room with only one working light. I then decided to take a shower, but the shower came apart in my hands. All in all, not good enough.

Our room was next to a door that was banging since early in the morning. The worst part was waking up with the fire alarm. We had to evacuate the building twice in a 10 minute slot, learning afterwards the fire alarm was caused by a shower in one of the rooms. Staff apologised for it, but I would have expected some kind of compensation for the inconvenience.

They offer a basic lunch menu with several larger dishes, such as salmon and burgers. The service was a little on the slow side but it seemed like the staff were rushed off their feet. My humous and grilled pepper ciabatta was large with generous portions of both humous and peppers. Although the humous was a little dry and it didn't taste freshly made, it was still an enjoyable, reasonably cheap lunch. Based on the location of the cafe and the fact that there's so much to see and do on the premises, it's a worthy pit stop. Ideal if you've forgotten your packed lunch! Otherwise, it's probably best for tea and cake!
