It was taken over and 'went downhill' so we, along with many other regulars, found different venues. However, the 'Trout' is now in yet another pair of hands and so we booked for last Saturday evening to see what it was now like. Our hearts sank when we entered as the bar was empty and looked pretty cheerless. When I asked for a dry sherry the barmaid could only offer me an Amontillado but she tried to be helpful. The restaurant then came as a pleasant surprise. The food was very good and plenty of it too. The service was good - friendly and, considering a large party was booked in that same evening, quite quick. Not a fancy menu. We had Shoulder of Lamb (hubby) and Lamb rump steak (me). Pretty basic selection of starters - garlic mushrooms, pate etc. then fish, steaks etc. and some vegetarian options (although not all available that evening). The deserts are mainly icecream based but there was a fruit salad and a fruit crumble on offer as well. Our bill for starters, mains and one desert and coffee came at just under £50 which we thought was quite good value for a Saturday night and the standard of the food we had. The house wine proved quite acceptable and not expensive. Apparently lunches are cheaper and Sundays there are at least 3 roasts on offer for around £8. The Rainbow Trout is in a delightful location and has superb views over the Weald from the rear (if you visit in daylight hours of course). It also boasts a large carpark plus outdoor seating if you wish to enjoy a drink in the fresh air. The conservatory (with doors permanently open) is now used as a smoking area.

Good quality beers handled with love. Through the bar the restaurant and roof terrace stretch both overlooking the sea. Elegant and modern the food fits the surroundings. This was the first time I have been for lunch and a family visit to grandparents in the rain was the perfect excuse. Food was pretty much faultless - beautifully presented, perfectly cooked from great ingredients. Fish by the sea - as it should be done..... Definitely on my return to list for the summer.

And when the sun comes out, as it did today, this is a great spot for feasting on traditional fish and chips with a few beers in their garden. The building is functional and non-descript you don't come here for the architecture but as part of a Dungeness afternoon of delights including a stroll to Derek Jarman's Garden (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/439630-Derek-Jarmans-Garden-Folkestone) and a journey on the mini-railway its perfect. The Crown is just the right size to feel cosy without being too crammed, a bit dark on the sunniest day of he year perhaps, but then it's only sensible to take shelter at midday. I always insist on having fish and chips when by the seaside and was almost disappointed to not find this basic pub grup offering here ... the menu is a lot more sophisticated and I had my cod served served on a bed of sweet potato. The fish is caught locally and was beautifully presented and delicious. We had a taste of the chips as a starter along with freshly baked bread (on the premises!) and pickled eggs (I was too squeamish to try those, but apparently they were delicious and definitely not of the turned-blue-on-the-counter type). And we didn's stop there, the pudding menu was just too tempting. I decided to stick to ice cream (bakewell tart flavour!) and soon had food envy as other's plum compote, tarts and cakes arrived - everything tasted just as wonderful as it sounded on the menu and looked on the plate. Lunch at the Crown Inn alone is reason enough not to leave it too long till the next trip.

It felt old-styled and very English. We loved it. We were seated at a large table in the rear, as we had a large party. The whole vibe was great: dark, moody, exactly what you would expect a pub to feel like. Now, seeing as this was our first time in the UK, we had to get the staples. Fish and chips for the wife, and I had steak and ale pie. Both were great. I don't have the experience to compare them to others, but we were very happy with our choices. We also had the Scotch eggs. They weren't really my thing, but I'm glad we tried them. The food was hot, fresh, and overall really tasty. Everyone we met who worked there was very kind and welcoming, and they even offered guidance on local places to see during our trip. We are from the southern US, so I did catch a few locals staring as we talked, but I get it. I am interested in accents as well.

The chips were superb though, really crispy on the outside, yet moist on the inside. The portions were enormous, and neither of us could quite manage the whole lot (nor should we have!) The only slightly odd thing was that they allow animals into the dining room. There was a cat asleep on a bench next to a family dining (I was actually rather jealous, that cat looked so cute!) and a dog (on a lead) at the very first table in the bar, so pretty far away from any tables that were eating. I personally don't mind animals at all, but I would think that some people may be put off. It was friendly, warm, cozy and the food was very good. We will definitely be returning!

Make a reservation, especially on Sundays. There's plenty of parking and a nice looking patio (although a bit too cold the day we went). Reviews on roasts by my dining companions were mixed. I wasn't very hungry and enjoyed my chicken liver pate. Service was good, veggies were cooked properly (bonus in this part of the world), and a few yummy ales available. I was not a fan of the espresso in my Americano; I would stick with tea in future. I will probably return and get the pate again. Strange menu item: "Pedro's" Filipino chicken curry served with poppadoms turned my half-Filipina stomach --I was tempted out of curiosity but probably better to avoid it.

A character bar with log fires serving guest ales, beers, wines, and free wi-fi. The restaurant serves traditional pub food twice a day. Both management and guests have eaten at The Two Sawyers Pub and rate it highly. Nice to see a rural pub doing so well!
