the owners are helpful, the store is full of history, and they have the best meat in a one hundred mile radius.

I try to keep my business here in town, but I just can't do County Market anymore. In the last 6…read moremonths I' ve gotten green potatoes, rotten apples, slimy organic lettuce, and then today was the last straw: I took a loaf of expensive pane bread out of the freezer, and the bottom of the bag fell out along with all the bread. So, OK, I have some organic celery- I'll make chow mein! Took celery out of its sleeve and it was all brown and gooey. Celery lasts quite a long time in the crisper, so it probably sat on the shelf for a month before I bought it. I appreciate them trying to carry organic produce, but no one likes to waste food and money. They' ve done some kind of store reorganization that is less organized than it was before. I don' t know if they are trying to emulate Dollar General, but some of the aisles look like rummage sales, with cheap stuff just randomly on the shelves. They carry a lot of off brands now, and no longer carry what I want. The craziest thing is that they have the magazines hidden away so that you can' t see them until you are at the cash register. No one is going to take their full cart and wait in line again to buy a magazine. How stupid. Price- wise I come out better at Schnuck' s- if you stick to their store brands and on- sale produce it' s quite economical- and there' s never any throwing away their beautiful produce. Too bad the nearest Schnuck' s is 20 miles away. I wish we had some choices here in town.

So we kept our shopping to the essentials we needed. There were a couple of good deals like some frozen pizza and coffee. Upon leaving, we needed to stop at their produce section. We got a bag of potatoes. A couple of days later we decided to make some sausage and potatoes in a skillet. Well, look at these pictures. Only 4 out of a 5 pound bag were able to be used. The rest had these moldy spots and when you sliced into the potato, it was a gray or near gray center. Never buying any fresh meat or produce from there again.

I usually shop this store for fresh vegetables and fruit. I picked up some plumcots which were…read morealready in a bag so did not check them. This was mainly my fault for not opening the bag and checking to see if the fruit was eatable. When I got home I opened the bag and all the plumcots were shriveled and uneatable, also tasted bad. So I wasted $6. Lesson learned -- always opened their bags and check!

My Experience at SCHNUCKS-Mahomet yesterday:…read more I was in Mahomet yesterday doing some errands for a friend, who needed an item from the grocery store. This was not my first time at the store in Mahomet, but it was the first time in quite a while - in fact, upon walking in, I was quite impressed with the recent remodel. The store looked new and very clean. As you walk in, you immediately hit the produce section. I noticed they had black seedless grapes for $1.99/lb, so I decided to pick up a bag of them. I weighed the bag at the produce counter, and it weighed ~2 lbs., so, by my calculations, my bag would cost ~$4.00. I picked up the items for my friend and continued to the register. I got to the register and the young man scanned and weighed my grapes and said my total was $6.55. I questioned it in my head, but thought maybe the scale was off in the produce section, so I swiped my card - something I wish I hadn't done. The kid handed me my receipt, which I noticed that the grapes weighed 2.19 lbs, but the price was $2.99 - $1 more than the sign said. I explained to the kid that the price was wrong, and he and the bagger both followed me over to the produce section to verify the price I saw. When we confirmed the price, we went back to the register and he tossed my receipt and handed me $0.75. I said that's not right, that he owed me a little over $2 - and he said he did not, and in the commotion the "manager" stepped in. I explained the situation to the "manager" [the quotes are here because the Manager, according to the receipt, was David Bryan, and this was a woman. Now unless this woman was named David, she was not the Manager]. The woman took me over to the front desk, where another young lady was, and started to give me the refund. This young lady was just as confused with basic math, having to pull out a calculator. I just don't understand how these kids can't see that with $1 difference at 2lbs means that you owe back $2. Meanwhile, the "manager" walked over to the produce section to check the price. When she returned, she said I was wrong and the price was $2.99/lb. I told her SHE was wrong and that I would not have picked up the grapes at that price, PLUS the kid that originally rang me up, who has now mysteriously disappeared along with my receipt, had verified the $1.99 price point. She stood her ground and told me I could keep the grapes at the price I was originally rung for, along with a smug "Have a good day." At this point I was pissed. I demanded a refund, then walked out - but then, as I was walking out, I turned around and went back to the produce section. There it was, the $1.99 sign, not once but on 3 rows of black seedless grapes!!! I removed the sign and marched it back up to the counter and showed it to the smug "manager," whom was conversing along with her staff about how crazy I was! I marched up and showed her the sign and said "WHAT DOES THIS SAY???" She said "Where was this?" and marched back over to the produce section. I showed her the area with the signs, but NOT ONCE did she apologize. Not once. She said "we can sell you the grapes for $1.99 - and I just said "Forget it. I don't want the grapes now!" and walked out the door. I will NEVER shop there again.

It has been a couple years since I have been in this place, but I was reminded of it whilst…read moreperusing Yelp here. It is a small store, but actually quite big for a small town shop. They don't have a large selection of more exotic things like dairy-free loafs of bread or frozen mock meats suitable for a vegan, but they do have some Mornigstar Farms items. I would suggest those for vegetarians if it were not for my recent discoveries about GMOs... While it sometimes feels like I am, I am assuming that I am not the only vegan or vegetarian visiting towns such as Monticello who is wondering where to go to get some eats. Anyhow, there is enough here that you can certainly make a meal no matter what your dietary needs. There just isn't much in the way of "quick" foods available here that I could eat if I just wanted to pop something into my friend's microwave. I am thinking that we did find some interesting items that I had not seen elsewhere, but it really escapes me what they were now. (I guess that means I will have to go back!) We were often visiting a friend in the area so we have shopped here when we did not feel like making the trek to Kroger or Walmart. I DO prefer to shop at small, locally-owned stores, but sometimes the hours didn't work for us or there were other things we needed at the bigger places. Everyone really should support this store though since it is such a luxury these days to have a grocery in a small town. It is for that reason that I am giving a four instead of a three because I am happy that it even exists. It was a huge selling point for me when we were considering moving to Monticello. All we have where we are now is a gas station and believe me I am grateful for that much! A grocery store would be heaven!
