I envisioned it more as a café, but it has more of a warehouse, bulk-order feel to the building. Someone told me that this patisserie provides the croissants for one of the major airlines so I guess that makes sense. Aesthetics aside, we placed our order for one butter croissant, one chocolate croissant, one raspberry croissant, and one pumpkin croissant. The croissants were delicious, but come frozen so if you would like to eat them, you have to request that they warm them up. I know that they ship their croissants all over the country so if you are looking for a unique gift idea, who doesn't love butter and carbs?

That said, it's completely different, totally low-brow, and absolutely nothing like 112. And that is OK! Because there is nothing wrong with a cafe or deli when elevated or even done RIGHT, and they are doing it at Madeline's. Yes, they are still building out the space, and sure, their focus is now specifically on baked goods, but everything we tried was perfectly delicious in a completely simple and unexpected way. From the Caesar salad, which VERY untraditionally comes with radish slices and dried cranberries and is topped with an outrageously bright and tasty dressing, to the tuna salad that is so perfectly balanced you can almost forget it's seafood, I see good things coming from this spot. The menu is limited, it is NOT fancy like Element 112, and the service is... rough, but damn that simple food is exactly what the lunch doctor ordered. My only complaint is that this glorious new bakery is in Sylvania and not downtown Toledo, but I know, some people like the burbs. PS: try the soup. Holy shit it's good.

You are always greeted with a welcome when you walk in and never rushed through choosing amongst their many delicious dessert offerings. The eclair, carrot cake, cannoli and lobster tails are always a favorite. And the mini cheesecake bites, especially the banana pudding one, so very good, and a great value in my opinion for it all. Prices are very resonable and in this economy that is appreciated. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I had my first match here. At the time it was a special, banana pudding matcha. It was so delicious. After that I was hooked. My order was always a banana pudding matcha with oat milk, and strawberry syrup. That was one of the best drinks I have ever had. The banana with the matcha, with the strawberry was just an absolute delight and hard to not drink all at once. Now the special is blueberry cheesecake, and it is also a wonderful drink. Highly recommend trying this little cute shop.

The homestead started with a few chickens and it has exploded into an enviable way of life many of us could only wish for. After the chicks she bought a freeze dryer that runs 24/7 - she cans many of her own foods - she's making her own soap, among other things. Her most recent endeavor has been perfecting sour dough bread and today I was the lucky recipient of a lovely, crusty boule. Through recent events, such as medical, deaths and life in general I had stopped making sour dough so I contacted Shell to get a new starter. She very kindly gifted me the starter and a loaf. The starter had a nice hooch on top and a reminiscent scent that I couldn't wait to stir it in and feed it, then left it on the counter. Then I turned to the bread. It had a slight heft to it and I was afraid it might be a bit dense. My husband sliced the loaf in half and spread out the open centers for a photo. The halves pressed together easily and there was a nice crumb texture. I would have preferred more air pockets running through, however, the taste was not affected. It was moist with a chewy crust. We are half the loaf with some olive oil. As someone who used to make breads every single dough day I know that it takes a little time to get a feel for when it's right and that that feeling can change from day to day depending on the weather. And each particular type of bread is different from another. I applaud Shell for her efforts. She is well on her way to becoming a sour dough whirlwind in the area. Watch for her roadside stand as the weather warms up and treat yourself to some farm fresh eggs and other goodies.
