Kokoro Training Academy - Best jiu jitsu school in Springfield Missouri

Kokoro Training Academy

In my humble opinion, Kokoro is the best jiu jitsu school in Springfield. Steve and his staff have…read morecreated a wonderful, open environment for both men and women (a lot of women love training here). Steve is also very detail oriented, having a background in education and as a crossfit trainer, he really knows how to teach the finer points of jiu jitsu to make sure your technique actually works on larger or stronger opponents. Lastly, something I really appreciate about starting out at Kokoro was the fact that we had a super clear curriculum, which meant everybody knew what they needed to learn and be able to perform to get their next belt. A lot of gyms operate on a "bro code", when the coach thinks your ready type of promotion system, or just promote based on competitive ability... my wife and I both appreciate the clarity.

As a woman who has never been very athletic, I have felt completely accepted and safe learning…read morejiujitsu here. There's no pressure to do anything I'm not comfortable with, the classes are fun, and everyone is friendly. Because the classes follow a fundamentals-based curriculum (and because Steve is a great teacher), the concepts are all accessible to beginners regardless prior experience or physical fitness level. Within just a couple of weeks after starting regular classes I started noticing myself progressing and became addicted! And it's far more fun than most types of exercise because your brain is engaged while you're sweating!

He said he liked Dominic Retana and he was one of his best students in town and His brother Phil Retana was one of the best next after his brother Dominic. Both come highly Reccomended to me by him and Phil's brother, Dominic, is maybe the only one I would reccomend before him.

The instructors here are top notch, and I could not possibly be any more impressed with their professionalism and knowledge in the art of KENPO Karate. Their patience and wisdom at this school is second to none. There is also a lineage to Grandmaster Ed Parker the founding father to American KENPO. In my opinion this ranks it number one in Springfield, Missouri. Please understand that when you come to the school there is an unwritten code here, "EARNED NEVER GIVEN," you will advance only with hard work and perseverance. Call Phil Retana today and schedule a time to come to the studio and chat. Walking in the door the very first time really is the hardest part.

They have a small selection of live plants, garden markers made from ornate silver utensil handles, unique hand made greeting cards, clothing, ceramics, beautiful hand made jewelry...just too much to list. You've got to check them out. The space is light and airy with plenty of room to move around, with a couple of thoughtful seating areas as well. I purchased some rice filled eye & palm pillows and my sister purchased the garden markers. We will be back!
