I was a 38 year old mom of four who always thought it would be fun to learn Karate, but had never had the time or opportunity to try it. I also wanted myself and my children to learn self-defense because of the world we live in. I found Mr. Dunhanm's school on line and called to set up an introductory session for myself and my fifteen year old son. Mr. Dunham allowed us both to feel very comfortable and was very encouraging during this initial session. Then, he took the time to sit with us and discuss what we were hoping to achieve from taking Karate and what our concerns might be. He asked a lot of questions to find out more about and what we would hope to gain by taking the classes. After the first introductory lesson I was very excited about joining the group classes. It has been a great bonding experience for myself and my son. We have met some great people through our classes and the school as a whole. We have taken Karate under Mr. Dunham for a year and a half now. My son is now 16 and I feel so much better about him being able to defend himself if he ever found himself in a dangerous or threatening situation. I also feel so much more confident that I could use the skills that I have learned and the conditioning that I have gone through to defend myself if I ever had to do so. I have long believed that martial arts could be an effective tool in molding a child into a responsible adult. This art instills many values I find lacking in society at large, values such as self-discipline, self esteem and goal-oriented learning being a few. I want my children to earn their places in the world and I want to give them the tools to do it. I was in a situation a couple of years ago that caused me to be fearful. My son had asked about doing karate and asked me to do it with him and I thought this would be a great opportunity to learn some self-defense. In the past few months I have come to really love walking into my training not only for self-defense but for the incredible feeling of belonging to something with such a long and proud history and culture. My focus at work and my everyday life has improved and hopefully will continue to along with my confidence. My 8 year old has started to show more respect at home and in class and I rarely have to ask him twice to do anything, which before was a regular occurrence. He even asked to have his birthday party there and all the kids had so much fun and learned some things as well. I really enjoy being a part of Dunham's martial arts. As an adult student we go through lessons a lot quicker but it is worth it. Chris Dunham is amazing at teaching and I learn so much just in one lesson that even when I have to miss classes I still feel able to remember the techniques given for certain things that could happen. After classes I feel confident and excited to learn more and more about Karate. Chris makes it worth your while to take classes and makes sure you work hard to move on to the next belt and that is what makes being in Dunham's Maratial Arts such an accomplishment for me. I started in March and because of other things I have not been able to attend classes as much as I would like, but when I do attend classes I am greeted by Chris and the students with open arms and learn several things and review several things. I am close to my next belt and I'm hoping soon to be able to attend more classes so that I can get it. I cannot say enough about this wonderful program! My son started here when he was 5 years old. He has learned so many good things from this program! Not only is he learning how to keep himself safe and what dangers to look out for, but Mr. Dunham creates a curriculum that encourages kindness, thankfulness, health, etc. They are not only training them to be safe and smart kids, but that training continues throughout their training. I've been training at Dunham's Martial Arts for over 3 years. I'm 40-something and wanted to learn self defense, but thought that only kids did martial arts. I was glad to find a great group of adults who train for many different reasons: self defense, good exercise, social/fun, and just to study the art of American Kenpo. It's ALL of these things! Mr. Dunham knows his stuff and is the most patient instructor when I can't seem to get coordinated. I like to watch the kids classes, too. They have a lot of fun while learning how to seriously defend against bullies and would-be kidnappers. Our daughter has really developed a wonderful level of focus, and has really applied the "always try your best" model both in sports and at home since starting martial arts training at Dunham's. She is more focused and confident in her school work, and has learned to focus on the positive. She is excelling in other areas as well, as her self-worth and awareness has grown. She is willing to weigh opportunities and take healthy risks to achieve/earn greater rewards. Our soon-to-be 7-year-old started going here a little over a year ago and is now a purple belt. We have watched her grow in self-confidence, self-discipline, focus, and respect. Last year she was so shy she couldn't talk to her teacher whatsoever. Now she is shouting out "yes sir's" and even raising her hand to answer questions. I enrolled my ten year old son I this school back in the fall. I did not "shop around" because of the immediate trust I felt with Mr. Dunham. On our first meeting I knew that he cared as much about my boy becoming successful in life as well as enjoy the class.
