Indy CD and Vinyl is like the old-school record stores I used to visit in my teens and 20s, oh so many years ago when I would actually purchase CDs and tapes. Except now, everything old is new again, and this record store actually has more records than anything else. So if you are a record collector, this is your place. They have new and used records, as well as quite a lot of CDs, cassettes, used DVDs, comic books and some records players and headphones for sale. It was my oldest son's idea to visit, because he loves record stores, and is proving to have impeccable taste in music. (He gets it from his mom.) He loves rap and hip-hop the most, and was a little disappointed that there weren't more albums by his favorite artists. I told him that I think album collecting tends to skew more toward rock and pop listeners, and people who listen to rap and hip-hop listen more digitally. That's my theory, but in any case, you should know that the hip-hop section is small. But the rock and pop section is large. This record store is a decent size, and in fact, there's a sign outside that says that they will soon be expanding. My son thought that the store was huge, but bless his ignorant heart: He didn't grow up going to the country's greatest record store, Amoeba Records in Hollywood, like I did. This is no Amoeba, but there's no place like Amoeba, and for a record store in central Indiana, Indy CD and Vinyl is really great. Two neat things about Indy CD and Vinyl: They have video games and pinball machines that you can play at the back of the store (for a couple of quarters). They also have a listening station, where you can scan the barcode of an album and listen to it before you buy it. It wasn't working when we visited, but that's cool that they offer that. No one in my household actually owns a record player, CD player or cassette player, so our visit was merely to look around and imagine the things we would buy if we had analog media players. My son did get a Tyler The Creator poster, though, so he was happy. read more

Store is clean, has an old school record store, after-school feel id seen in 80s shows & movies lol. I dropped in because I learned that Indy CD and Vinyl had expanded. It's been a long time since I was there, so I wanted to see the new place. The store looks as well-organized as I remember, with lots of used and new LPs and CDs. I was able to find what I was looking for. There is another room that is set up for in-store performances. There are a few pinball tables and some t-shirts and other music related items for sale there but I didn't spend much time in that section. I went on a Saturday afternoon and the place was hopping! People of all ages and even families were shopping for records. It was slightly difficult to maneuver because the aisles are narrow (which is not unusual for an indie record store BTW). I found some items I wanted to buy and headed for the register. This is the area that needs improvement. The clerk didn't say one word to me. Just rang up the items, put them in a bag, and plopped them on the counter. Maybe this guy has watched High Fidelity too many times and didn't think much about my purchases. Will I go back? Maybe. I prefer Luna Records. At least the staff are friendlier there. read more

This place was on the top of my list of record stores to check out in Indy. Only had time to check out one store, and decided on this one because I've followed them on Insta for a while and know they have a decent selection of metal and punk. My eyes quickly found the used vinyl recent arrivals and I spent a good chunk of time flipping through them. Came across a lot of metal, punk, and alternative, as well as indie and pop music. Impressed that their recent arrivals was all quality stuff, not junk records (you know stuff like beat up disco records and musicals from the 60's no one cares about...). Eventually made my way to the new vinyl section, and picked up the 25th anniversary edition of Elliott Smith's self titled debut. Also, I was super happy they had a section for Scott Walker AND Matt Berry. They're the first record store I've seen with a Matt Berry section! It only had one record, but that's more than I've seen anywhere else!!! My hubby found a stack of metal records and CD's. Not a huge store, but they have a great selection. read more

This is one of my favorite music stores to browse. They have lots of music on both cd and vinyl. Not just inventory, but lots of really good records to choose from. There are listening stations for cd's and a play area if you need to let your kids play while you browse. Great selection! I got a record player for my birthday but I wish I would've asked for one sooner, love a good nostalgic item from childhood. Like any entertainment section in stores (CDs, movies, etc) it's sorted alphabetically and by genre, but for the questionable artists, I think it would've been easier if it was all sorted just by alphabet. There's a nice small lounge area, clearance/sale corner, music playing throughout the store, and friendly and helpful staff. I seem to always have the best luck finding great purveyors of used and new vinyl, and Indy CD and Vinyl makes the cut. Well stocked with quality used and new vinyl and CDs of all genres. Displayed in easy to reach bins that are organized for efficient searching. Staff is pleasant and helpful. When I first walked in, I thought oh boy, I'll spend hours in here! A short tour by the nice blonde-headed gal helped me locate a few used gems reasonably priced for their condition. Would have liked to spend more time in the area, as it was full of Bohemian pubs, stores and cafes. Parking is convenient in the rear. Highly recommend visiting this store when you are in the area (or not). Would make a great day-trip! read more

Plus they are down to earth ladies that had that Outkast - Southernplayalisticadillaczik album ready for your boi when they just got it in. They were very friendly and it shows from when you come in. Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon with my 16 year old to show her what a *real* record store is like. I miss the days of "One Music" in my good old hometown of Muncie and figured she had heard enough of my stories about midnight Pearl Jam releases and Doc Martens that it was worth the trip to Indy CD and Vinyl. It did not disappoint. She was amazed at the selection and even commented that she was able to find artists from her obscure pandora play lists here. Score. I could get lost here for hours just flipping through the records and CDs. They also have a listening station with about 10 different genres to explore. Nice. What do you usually expect from a record store? Snobby staff? I expect that. And that's because I'll never live my dream of going to a record store and seeing someone who looked like/was John Cusack slanging vinyl. (I'll get over it.) Indy CD & Vinyl is not snobby. This staff welcomes you with open arms ready to shove some rad jamzillas into your ear holes. Expensive? You should know that resurrecting vinyl is a costly business. Anyone complaining about prices of vinyl should stick with CDs, download Kazaa, go back to 1999. I just bought a SINGLE of Nelly's Country Grammar for $29. This record had two songs on it. Supply and demand, guys. You wanted vinyl, pay for vinyl. Anyway, this store rules and I'm going to miss it when I'm gone. read more

Good selection and environment - but don't order vinyl through them. I would shop what they have in store only. I ordered a record in January and never received the call to pick it up, so when I happened to be in the store last weekend, I asked about it. I was told that it came in and that they should have called me, so they assumed I decided not to pick it up. I paid for it, so why would I just not pick it up? I reordered, which was no problem or bother to me. However, I then got the call a couple days later and went to grab it today, and they claimed to have no proof of purchase and of course, I don't have the receipt after two months. So, I paid twice for one single record. All I have is my word, which is that I bought The Roaring Silence by Manfred Mann's Earth Band (used) i think around $7, a pink floyd pin, and a led zeppelin pin. Surely that didn't add up to $50.18 all on its own? Nice people, maybe just need to update their system for orders. read more

This is one of those reviews I write that goes completely against popular opinion. I really can't dig this place. Just looking at it makes me think it's not going to be for me. The place could definitely use a face lift, inside and out, but I guess that could be my OCD talking. The stacks are hard to navigate, and the prices seem absurd. Every time I've ever stopped by the employee's are usually too involved in their conversations with friends to approach with questions. I don't dig it at all, but it is an independently owned music store with has a lot of merit to it, but over all I just can't being myself to go here for my music needs, I think I'll just drive a few blocks south and dig in at Luna. read more

It's a giant music library of all different kinds and the only difference is you get to keep them! (After buying of course). Great selection of music, DVDs, music magazines, etc. for any standard music store. If the pricing was a little better(and which both abovementioned stores hold an edge), I'd likely add a star. Least I did find a DVD here that I hadn't seen anywhere else, and the staff went out of their way to help, so no complaints here. read more

I'm about as Millennial as it gets, yet there's just something about walking into a music store and holding something in my hands that gives me something that hitting the download button on iTunes doesn't give me. I collect CDs and vinyl, but outside of a handful of major chain stores, there aren't many places to go. Enter Indy CD and Vinyl, a local store that exists to feed my need for music. There's a great selection (plenty of old favorites and more contemporary artists, and even a few local artists), the staff is very welcoming and friendly (one cashier and I once had a brief conversation over our mutual love of Doctor Who at checkout), and even if CDs or vinyl aren't your thing, you can also find a great selection of DVDs and the occasional action figure. Plus, there's also the occasional in-store performance for those who like more intimate, stripped-down performances by their favorite artists, local or national. Sure, it's a little expensive at times, but hey, that comes with the territory when you're building a collection. Indy CD and Vinyl is a place for people who love music. read more
