Roti Vegetarian Full Sides chickpeas & rice yellow lentils potatoes & spinach
Brayden V.

went with friends on a cool early autumn afternoon. ample seating is available on a covered patio (no indoor seating) keep this in mind as there were several mosquitoes. ordering is available via QR code at the tables or ordering inside. I'd recommend ordering inside as when I tried to order sides for the veggie platter via the QR code, most of the dishes were marked as unavailable. When ordering inside, nearly all of the dishes were available to order (square site issue perhaps?). the veggie platter was $20 and came with chickpeas, rice and 2 veg sides. roti for $2, came to $27 for me. not the most price efficient establishment for the portions, but the flavors reflect the rave reviews i've heard from friends and acquaintances alike. bar opens at 4pm.

I was finally in the mood for Indian food and was able to try award winning restaurant, Indigo. I'd heard people recommend it since I moved to DC and it's right in my neck of the woods. I called in to place the order and it was ready in about 15-20 minutes. I paid $50 for 2 butter chicken plates here everything that I loved and didn't love as much, Things I loved: + chickpea side was really delicious + seems like they treat their staff well + lots of free street parking midday + food was made in a timely manner and the to go packaging was great Things I didn't love as much: + I thought the butter chicken was just ok .. their spicy level was actually spicy lol. It kind of made my stomach hurt how spicy it was. There's another place in DC that I personally like better and the portion is a bit bigger + they don't give you the side of bread with your order so I purchased their roti on the side. I thought it was rather small but it was tasty. Thank you to the Indigo team, and wishing you all the best :) Keep winning those Best of DC awards

Indigo Special

I walked inside this establishment and the aroma from the food smells incredibly good. I ordered the indigo special which consist of chicken, garlic ,ginger, chick peas and some other spices which was delicious. At first I thought I need more chicken, but I actually had enough to eat now and save for later. This restaurant is off K st NE in the NOMA area. The staff seemed pretty nice. I will definitely return to try other dishes.

This restaurant is located on the outskirts of downtown, in a residential area. There is limited street parking available. I ended up double parking and running in and getting my order. The place is decent sized and has a take out area, a dining area with a full bar and a patio area. As I mentioned, I got my food togo. I had placed an online order with about a group of 10 people from work. Before even eating our food, we disappointed. Some orders were wrong, they had missed telling us to pick up a drink that we had ordered and they did not include any utensils. I ordered the Coconut Chicken Curry meal with a Mango Tango Drink. My food tasted great, after i found a fork. It was flavorful with a little kick, just how I like it. The portion was not very big though, especially considering how much the food cost. My rating is based on the whole experience of me and my group. If it were based on the food alone, it would be a solid 4 star rating. If I were in the mood for Indian food and had the opportunity, I would definitely give this place another try though.

The food was incredible and delicious. service is great, food is taken to you except for utensils found at the front of the restaurant. All-together we had a great time and the ambiance of the area was wonderful, there was also many heaters to keep us warm. Keep it up indigo, great work tonight! -MG food reveiws

absolutely loved the style of this patio like takeout/eat in situation. So fun to sit with friends outside by the bar with ample heating. What a unique but fun idea. Butter chicken was great but coulda used a bit more salt. Portions are good sized and the rice with chickpeas is delish. A unique but fantastic experience.

Indigo is one of my favorite Indian spots. They're only open in the evenings, so you won't be able to visit them for a lunch trip. They're only open have outdoor seating that's closed in so you don't have to worry about swatting mosquitoes the entire time. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and everyone always seems to be enjoying their time there. The food is great. Everything I've tried from the saag, to the lamb jogan rosh is so delicious! Their curry shrimp is a must try! There's vegetarian, pescatarian, and meat eat options. There's something for everyone. Parking kinda sucks, but other than that, I love indigo!

Indigo has been my SPOT for excellent Indian food for years!!! For over a decade -- since way back in the day when they were a vendor at Eastern Market. The quality of the food has always been phenomenal! The spices always come together like no other Indian restaurant I've been to in the area. There hasn't been one dish that I've tried that has been less excellent. Service has always been great as well. Everyone is so personable. Nidhi and Dinesh have built something that many local DC restauranteurs only hope to build. They are a staple in the neighborhood and I can't wait to see them expand throughout DC!

Absolutely loved the food here! It's a patio style setup for seating which is great when it's not 95 degrees outside. They offer free water machines in several spots. We went inside and placed our order and then back out to wait. Order came out very quickly. The flavors were amazing and it was a decent portion size. There is also a bar.

Indigo is such a vibe! I have been hearing about this place for awhile and was so excited to try with my girlfriends on a weeknight before Thanksgiving! The ambiance is adorable - decked out with Indian decor from Bollywood movie references to Indo-American inspired art. Specifically appreciated the 'Got Punjabi?' poster :) I went with the Chicken Kathi Roll - a delicious masala blend of chicken, onions, and coriander wrapped in a chapati. While it wasn't as spicy as I would have preferred, it was a delicious roll that paired perfectly with a Mango Rupee. The service was quick and very accommodating! Excited to come back to Indigo soon.

Vegetarian Paradise Platter
An A.

Food is tasty and well made. Rice is fluffy! The chickpeas on the side isn't a lot, though. I chose the paradise platter with paneer makhani and baingan bharta. The baingan had a lot more tomatoes in it than I like, but their recipe is enjoyable. Service was quick. Ambiance was fine during the day, but I'm sure it's more lively at night. Only outside seating - no heaters from what I could tell. Good for larger parties, too! The only con is that Indigo has gotten more expensive for what it is, and used to give much larger portions! The $19 vegetarian platter is enough for one person (and leftovers).

Ian C.

Indigo lives up to the hype! The food was absolutely fantastic and the atmosphere was cozy with eclectic decorations / signage. Great community feel and staff is very friendly. Their Mango Lassi is dangerously good!

Ask the Community - Indigo

Hi - is the meat here halal?

Are dogs allowed on the patio?

I believe so, I've seen dogs multiple times and not asked to leave

Is there indoor seating? I'm wondering if it's possible to eat there in January or if take-out is a better option. TIA!

Yes there is limited indoor seating

Is it ADA/wheelchair accessible?

Doubtful. Tight space inside where you order. Lots of room outside though. Perhaps an order could be placed for the person in question then brought out to said person.

Is this place usually busy on a Friday night at 7:30pm?

They're busy but the service is quick! There's plenty of outdoor seats and getting takeout is easy. Not many indoor seats though!

Is it a dog-friendly place?

Yes it's dog friendly they have a large patio.

I've…read moreheard great things about Chai Pani in Asheville for years, so I was thrilled they opened up a location in DC. Chai Pani serves Indian street food, and the restaurant is vibrant and colorful and fun. The service was also great - friendly, helpful. My mom is vegan, and their menu is very vegetarian- and vegan-friendly. We shared: Disco Bhel (puri, puffed rice, boondi, corn poha, sev, onion, cilantro, roasted peanuts, tamarind & green chutneys, bhel mix, pomegranate); Sweet Potato Chaat (roasted sweet potatoes, pomegranate, masala cashews, golden raisins, red onions, cilantro & corn poha; tossed with tamarind & green chutneys); matchstick okra fries (julienned "okra fries" tossed with salt & seasoning, served with a lime wedge); Sabudana Vada Tots (crispy tater & tapioca tots seasoned with green chillies, curry leaves, cumin & ginger; served with Maggi hot & sweet ketchup); wild mushroom & scallion uttapam (Exotic mixed mushrooms, scallions, green chilli, ginger & curry leaf; served with coconut chutney & ghee-podi); Sloppy Jai (spiced lamb hash simmered with tomatoes, ginger & aromatic spices; garnished with onions & cilantro, green chutney, sweet yogurt & served on two toasted pav); and coconut chutney sorbet Sundae (coconut sorbet infused with hints of ginger, curry leaf, & cumin; topped with a chocolate shell). Everything (with the exception of the lamb take on a sloppy Joe) was vegan or veganized, and everything was delicious. I had reached my alcohol max for the day, so we had some non-alcoholic drinks (even though their drinks looked great). I had their Golden Pineapple (Spicewalla Golden Milk blend mixed with fresh lime and pineapple), and my husband had a Tamarind Cola. With dessert, I also had a Chai - and theirs is a treat (although I wanted to read my book and take a nap right after - the coziest beverage on a rainy day). I had a great time at Chai Pani. Their Indian street food menu is great - I wanted everything. And the service made the meal even better. We had a reservation, and I recommend you make one, too! They had some tables for walk-ins but they were time limited or high-tops. If you want to make sure you get a table, make a reservation ahead of time! I had a great dinner; I'd love to return.

She liked the food just as much as we do -- this time we tried the catfish special , catfish koliwada (I confess I was disappointed to find that the dish came in fried bite-sized morsels instead of whole filet), plus the disco bhel, aloo tikki chaat, and lamb kala masala (my favorite of them all), as well as another kale pakora chaat. Our daughter-in-law wanted some extra spice and was brought a small plate with a few hot peppers and a very spicy pickle (a small extra charge). One disappointment was the very loud music blaring , making it harder to chat in a normal voice -- the maitre d' explained that it is equally loud throughout the restaurant, providing an atmosphere comparable to Mumbai. I was not impressed by that excuse (and besides, it was NOT that loud every where in Mumbai when we were there 25 years ago) Sill, good and interesting food. A recommended place

Spoiler alert.) CHICKEN KORMA - 20.99 + mild spice level, basmati rice There was a large portion of korma and plenty of basmati rice, more than I could finish. The curry was nutty and creamy, but lacked a lot of spice and flavor, and I found it pretty bland. The chicken also tasted overcooked. Overall, this wasn't good, and I definitely wouldn't recommend it. PANEER 8 OZ - 4.99 The paneer was smothered with a tikka masala sauce that gave each piece a slight tangy sweetness. I honestly would've been happy eating the rice with this paneer and curry. My friend shared her tandoor chicken and paneer dosa with me so I could try it despite my initial stubbornness. The tandoor chicken was well-seasoned, juicy, and incredibly fresh. We'd definitely recommend getting this as an appetizer. The paneer dosa was a bit bland, but the paper-thin dosa with its elegant crisp was impressive. I enjoyed the sides and sauces that came with it. I'd probably order the masala dosa next time. Overall, super casual and chill dining experience. I always overlooked Spice 6 when choosing a restaurant in this area, but definitely enjoyed their tandoor chicken and dosas!

Mushroom Biryani (4.5/5) Solid biryani with a nice umami flavor from the mushrooms. I really like the bread top - you can dip it into any of the sauces you get. The fig raita is delicious too. I didn't take any photos because I really just wanted to enjoy it, etc., without whipping out my phone for every course. Even for a Micheline restaurant, I felt it unnecessary to serve the drinks on their own stage/platter with other things surrounding it (inedible trinkets and whatnots). The drink is presented to you, and the whole "stage" for the drink gets whisked away. I say bring the drink in the glass you're supposed to drink out of and let it speak for itself. Maybe this is done for quick Instagram picture moments? Other than that...meh...My husband did enjoy his drink, and I thought it was wonderful as well, as I tasted it. The Stage presentation was so unnecessary to me, though. Unfortunately, there are no non-alcoholic spirits, and for a Michelin-Star restaurant. I feel like this is a must have (non alcholoic, wines, sparklings, whiskeys, gins, ect.) That would be my number one recommendation for this spot. We found the menu a bit confusing at first, and didn't receive the best explanation of what the "rundown" was on how to order. Each course was okay, Service was quick to put the dish in front of us, and wander off, without explanation of what was going on, on the plate ( ya, we picked out what we ordered, doesn't necessarily mean we knew what we were eating lol)... The best dishes for both my husband and I were the mains. He had a monkfish, and I had the crispy duck...pretty good Our mains came with really great rice and lentils. The Naan, was incredibly underwhelming, didn't seem like it was the freshest, and lacked the salt and fat/butter/herbs and warmth I was hoping for. So interesting experience overall...
