She is AMAZING! She really takes the time to work out the perfect cut and color that I'm looking for. I appreciate that she's gentle with my sensitive head and that she keeps the color off all my peach fuzz! I get more compliments on my hair after she does it than any other time! To add, she's always up to date on the newest tricks and styles so no matter what you want, she can do it!

You know the experience won't go as well if this happens in the middle of your haircut:…read more Hairstylist: Sorry about that, I had to answer the phone. Me: That's ok. Hairstylist: It was somebody from...Yelp? They wanted to talk to the owner and she's not here so I told him I'd take the message and have her call him back. He asked me if I wrote down all the info but I didn't...oh well. Me: Ohh ok... It made me wonder if she knew any idea of what Yelp was and made me not tell her that I may or may not review this experience. I may not review all the time, but for the most part, people always remember their not so good experience so here goes nothing: I got a tip from one of our managers on our floor where she got her last haircut and I was in dire need of a haircut (hadn't gotten a hair cut in almost a year so the mop on my head was was in desperate need of TLC). I told her that I loved her hair and she had a good experience with the girl at Shear Success. I said I am totally going there and happen to see they had a Groupon. Score for me - made me look forward to it even more so. Finally the day arrived to get my haircut and I was anxious all day for it because I was ready for healthier and lighter hair. Unfortunately for the hairdressers here, I compare their work with what I get back at home in Michigan. I've lived here for the last 5 years and CANNOT find THE hairstylist that is a keeper. I told the hairstylist you can do whatever you'd like to my hair, all I ask is that you do not give me face-framing layers and that it's no shorter than my armpit. I would think there would be endless possibilities as my hair was waist length. So this is what happened: She took the shears and cut off the length with maybe two cuts. Then proceeded to color my hair with partial foil. When she got to the hair closest to my forehead she slapped it on and probably punched my right eye a couple times in the process. I would have told her but I probably blacked out both times. And here is where I should have stayed quiet and not ask any questions: Me: So...what do you plan on doing with my hair (this is while she is blowdrying my hair, at which point makes me think she was close to being done) Hairstylist: Oh what do you mean? Me: Like what kind of plans do you got for my hair? Layers? Etc? Hairstylist: I already cut your hair, I'm just going to texturize it. Me: Oh ok (in my head I said, hahaha, just kidding). I don't know if it was because I had a Groupon in tow, but I felt like she did a half-ass job. Like she just wanted to get the job done. I was disappointed that there wasn't more dimension in my hair. If I wanted to get my haircut at one length I felt like I could have done that myself. I asked her if she could go back in and put some layers in there and she said that there already were layers in there but I just couldn't see them. At that, I tipped her nicely - probably more so than I should have, but since I don't think I'll go back, it was my "I'm not coming back and guess what, you'll be on Yelp." Overall, it wasn't a botch job, it was not horrible, I'm not a person that is attached to my hair, I think I was just disappointed - hoping for more creativity. And onward goes the search for the perfect hairstylist....

I am sad to write this review but figured it's good information to share with others…read more I read a lot of reviews and I made an appointment with "stylist A", about a month in advance. The day of the appointment I got a call from someone else (stylist B) saying that she was running 20 min behind and asked if I could come 20 min later than scheduled, I said sure and that's what I did. I get there and stylist B greets me, this is when I realized she isn't the person I booked with, based on the picture. She said "your haircut is now with Stylist C and pointed to another woman standing by the desk. I had no choice in the matter and was already very annoyed but the switch ups but didn't feel like I could say no, plus I needed a haircut. Let's just say I was less than thrilled with stylist C and the haircut I ended up with. Also very unhappy with how unprofessional stylist B was, she never mentioned she is taking over my appointment, and she called to change the appointment time and was still unavailable. I also want to mention that I emailed the salon sharing my disappointment and have not heard back at all.. no apology, explanation or anything. So if you have a preference for a stylist make sure they don't change things up on you! Very disappointing customer service.

0/0***Edited Response to Unprofessional Owner:*** I am devastated by how badly my hair has been…read morebutchered, and the owner's shocking response only adds to my frustration. Such an unprofessional, non-factual, and condescending reply reinforces my decision not to return and should serve as a major red flag for anyone considering this establishment. It's particularly troubling that neither the owner nor anyone in authority has had the decency to address my negative experience directly. The baseless attacks on my character are unacceptable, and it's disheartening to see lies and opinions spread publicly without any attempt to understand my side of the story. I want to share my incredibly distressing experience at Lua Nova Salon. I walked in excited for a new hairstyle, having shown the stylist a picture of what I wanted--a long bob (LOB) with layers. However, from the very first cut, I sensed something was off. The stylist next to mine reacted with wide eyes, looking back and forth between my hair and the floor, which immediately raised my concerns. Unfortunately, my fears were confirmed as the stylist butchered my hair. Instead of the layers I requested, I left with a blunt cut short bob that was nothing like what I had envisioned. To make matters worse, I was asked to leave while still in shock and tears. My distress made the stylist uncomfortable--yes, MY tears over my butchered hair were making HER uncomfortable. I was asked to leave looking like this, which made the situation all the more horrifying. I can't believe I walked into a place where, within 15 minutes, all my hair was chopped off, and I was treated as if I were the issue. I felt dismissed and invalidated during a moment that was deeply personal to me. I cannot express how heartbroken I am over this experience. If I could give negative stars, I absolutely would. I strongly advise against sitting in Emma Carlson's chair, as my experience with her was nothing short of horrendous. Please be cautious if you decide to visit this salon. What was meant to be a fresh cut to help me take a step forward in overcoming my deep depression has only made things 20 times worse. I hope others have a better experience, but I certainly will not be returning. I will be surprised and blessed if I make it out of this one. This has truly been an absolute nightmare and one of the worst days of my life. The first picture is my hair before I walked in; the second is the picture I showed the stylist for reference. This is what I was kicked out looking like. I'm still crying over this at 9 PM and can't believe this happened. I balled up what hair is left and put it underneath a barbell cap, topped with a hooded sweatshirt. I can't even look in the mirror. My head is throbbing from how much crying I've done. Jaynee Studer For…read morethe past seventy - four years, I have been getting my hair cut about every five to six weeks. In that number of years, I have been to many barbers and stylists. The reason I am writing this review is to say that Jaynee Studer at Sakada is the best stylist I have ever had. I have been going to her for over two and one - half years and she is superb in every respect. She is an exceptional stylist and has found a way to cut my hair (with all of its cowlicks) so that it always looks very nice when she is finished. For over ten years, I went to a stylist at another salon and, after ten years, she could never even remember on which side I parted my hair! Jaynee is exceptional in her techniques and I would recommend her highly to anyone who is looking for a stylist. Besides being excellent at her profession, Jaynee is also very friendly and personable and a good person with whom to have a conversation. I always look forward to my appointments with her.

I returned to get a nice new look for date night; unfortunately, I had horrible service this time around. I did bring in a reference photo for inspiration. I was open to talking about colors if there was a need to. I was a golden blonde on the parts that were balayage from last time. After some discussion, Melia asked if I looked like the reference photo and if I would be happy. I said yes. The service started fine, but she didn't get a lift from my hair. She said she feared damage, but I don't know why she didn't do a strand test if that was the case. Either way, she went through it again, and this time, it lifted very yellow. I was pretty concerned when she was drying it and not noticing that it needed some correction. She kept saying there were light issues, but being next to a big window, I didn't feel that was the case. I asked her if we could put some toner or something to help it. She did this, but it left blue spots in my hair, and I felt my blonde pieces were inconsistent in tone and application. She styled me before I really had a chance to look it over and as we were over time she had me pay her. She gave me her card and kind of awkwardly said if I needed anything to contact her. When I got home, I looked at my hair closer, but it didn't look good. I went to straighten it to get a better look at the issues; it was apparent that this was a bad outcome. I'm extremely disappointed in the lack of honesty. I understand mistakes happen, but professionals note when things don't turn out well and schedule customers for a fix before leaving. I sent my photo to get an opinion and was advised this would need some big color correction. I do believe in giving people another shot if I think they can do it. However, I already made many comments of concern about the color to which I felt wasn't validated when it should have been. I also didn't feel we had enough trust if she let me walk out looking this way. My hair already went through a lot and I don't have the confidence that she has a solution to get me where I want. I did ask for a refund as I would need to pay for a corrective service. It's one thing if this was about a matter of taste, but this was technically a bad job. In a text, she said she didn't do refunds and would do a corrective treatment followed by recommendations of foils. I don't want foils; I want blended pieces. Right now, I have harsh lines in my hair that shouldn't be there. There was back and forth about whether she thought this was a good outcome and about consistency/patterns. I have had multiple balayages over the years, and I know what is expected, so it was pointless to argue further. At this point, I think the pictures speak for themselves. It sucks when things go wrong, but I would have hoped that it would have been acknowledged at the time of the appointment or at least in the end. I did get my tip back after I sent pictures to push my point further, but this experience was beyond disappointing. Lessons I learned: 1) These people are independent contractors, which means their work is not guaranteed. Make sure you discuss bad results and alternative solutions if they are not nailing the look they promised. A good stylist stands behind their work and cares about your happiness. If you have any doubt, go somewhere else. 2) Be your own advocate. If you are too shy to say something, go somewhere else that has a manager in charge. 3) Always tell them to do a test strand if they have any concerns about lifting or hair integrity. It's better to do a test than doing a service again and running out of time. 4) If you are in doubt, ask another stylist in the salon to come over and give feedback. That way, you will know if your concerns are valid.

I mean, who doesn't like sipping a PBR (or La Croix if that's your jam) and listening to rock music while gettin your hair did? I've been coming to Hair-O-Smith regularly since April 2018, when I decided to do my side shave and having already had my first positive experience the previous July when I did a simple trim and dye to hide those pesky grays for a wedding I was in. Alison has been my gal and she's awesome. We usually just do a monthly touch up on my side shave (husband does one in between cause my hair grows so fast and I can't afford going there THAT many times lol), but I've been branching out more recently and we've started to do little designs in the shave and I recently added some red to the front for funsies. I just shoot her a text a few days before I'm ready to come in and she has no trouble fitting me in. The NE location is convenient as well because I can just pop over real easily during lunch or after work. I never thought I'd be the girl who went to the salon, but for this one at least I'm glad to have found a chill and laid back place! PS - there is a (clearly marked) parking lot attached so that you don't have to park in the street, although there is plenty of street parking all the times I've gone as well.

My experience was disappointing from beginning to end. The first stylist didn't take the time to communicate clearly about my haircut or make sure we were on the same page. I left with a haircut I wasn't happy with and feeling like the experience itself wasn't important. After contacting the salon, I met with the owner for a consultation. While she made some adjustments, the entire appointment was awkward. She barely spoke, so I found myself trying to carry the conversation just to break the silence. She didn't seem interested in building any rapport or making me feel comfortable. Near the end, she interrupted me while I was still talking, ended the appointment, and sent me on my way. I left feeling dismissed rather than cared for. The salon advertises itself as welcoming and experienced with diverse hair types, but my experience didn't reflect that level of customer care. I never felt listened to, valued, or genuinely welcomed. Every interaction felt like an obligation instead of someone who enjoys their work and wants clients to come back. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I think people should know that customer service here was just as disappointing as the haircut. I won't be returning, and I can't recommend this salon based on my experience.

Unfortunately my concern is regarding their communication and strict policy. They would rather loose me as a future customer than help find a middle ground of a missed appointment that I tried to call the office for. Their booking service had an outdated number associated to it, so I didn't receive any communications with them. I hate to have to do this but if this is how a repeat customer is ignored and treated then it's just actually unfortunate. They took my money, which is expensive. I cannot and I don't any one really can afford an expensive hair appointment and receive no service. People budget for these things because yes they have people with skills and it's expensive! I am stuck in need of hair service. Without any regard. Just a rigid cold - rely on policy vibe, as in they disassociate with what they are saying because it's not right. And act with toxic positivity. Policy is NOT law binding. I will be disputing with my bank and considering further actions. As they even have a voicemail from me they never returned. I called them 4 times. And spoke to someone 1 time who couldn't assist me in any way as she was the register/ host and no one was available to be actual help. I didn't miss my appointment they ignored me. So yeah. Sorry but just a heads up out there- if you have kids or a family situation or work that might change your schedule unexpectedly due to, for me, a court date was set. Don't book as schedule may change and they will not care about taking 100 percent of price for nothing all because life is life and policy is just a pretend word to act like and/or hide behind.

NO PROBLEM to reschedule since I was given my next suggested preference BUT, when I got there at my rescheduled time, my stylist was caught off-guard when I arrived. Just had to work through the initial "icky" feeling of realizing that things hadn't been prepared for my first visit. At first, I was already writing up a review in my mind of how bad this was going to be, but as soon as my stylist came to terms with how quickly the morning had already flown by and that, yes indeed, I had been rescheduled, she jumped into the game and was ready to take action. She has a winsome and delightful personality. She was sincere in her apologies about the situation. There was another woman in the salon with her hair in foils and in the middle of a coloring process, so my stylist continually said that she works well fast. While I trusted that, I was letdown since I wanted my hair to receive the full time-allotted attention. I have long hair and said that I was looking to have 2-3 inches cut off. We agreed on it being cleaned up, but she didn't check visually with me on the actual amount being cut off before or after she started clipping away. Regardless, she did do a great job on the actual cut, but in the end, I would have liked the full 3 inches rather than 2 inches. She didn't ask what I thought when she was done, because she was in a rush. She offered $15 off my next cut and gave another genuine apology. I would have been much happier with my first impression of this salon if I had been rescheduled at a time where she wasn't stressed out. I'd much rather wait another week or two so that it feels thorough and leisurely rather than to be crammed in, and feel like an inconvenience. She's clearly got the right personality, ability, and talent...she just needs to create boundaries for her work so that any given day doesn't become THE hectic one as I experienced. I'd imagine I would otherwise have given her 5-stars.
