I knew when Leesa offered me a beer while doing my hair that I'd found my rockNroll salon--just kidding! Kinda. Actually, my 8 yr old daughter (at the time) found them. I was having an art show next door in the gallery, Altered Asthetics (that's how they spell it, not a mistake on my part). Anyway, Stephanie had invited my little wide-eyed budding-hairNmakeup artist/fashionista child, who was bored and had wandered out into the hallway to gaze into their very cool looking rocked-out salon, to talk! Wow! I had once asked someone (at Jungle Red, might as well be truthful--she's no longer there apparently) that I wasn't "a good candidate" for extensions so, although I'd always wanted to get them, never thought I could. Stephanie scoffed at that and immediately called Leesa, HairOSmith's owner and resident extension magician. Before I knew it, I had myself an appointment for what I had always wanted: long, red, real hair extensions-- and fusion, natch. My daughter, of course, had Stephanie put a synthetic purple extension in (which, btw, stayed in for almost, I kid you not, TWO YEARS). My appt. with a slight trim thrown in was slightly less than 200 bucks! No way that you are gonna find such incredible work, at such a great place for a better price--unless you have a relative or friend who comes to your house (like I used to when I lived back home in Jersey--free cut & color!) Now all that said, I myself, with my insane schedule, have been woefully neglectful of my extensions this time 'round, particularly. I HAVE to make a damn appointment one of these minutes! read more

Unpretentious and light-hearted --these ladies know everything about hair. Describe any kind of look you have in mind for yourself: they can do it. I went to Stephanie for many years for extensions when I wanted long, luxurious, glamorous locks. Even though her stylist-to-the-stars career has been rising, she found ways to accommodate my schedule, and I will always love her for that. Our discussions were always lively, fun, and stimulating. The hours flew by! She has even styled a wig for me, for a different look. All hail Stephanie!! Life changed, and so did my look...but I still go to Hair-O-Smith--now to the wonderful Jennifer. Extensionless now (not saying I'll never go back, I miss them) Jennifer works equally well with my own fine curlish/wavish summer frizz, and my fine, flat winter blah hair to make me look pretty and professional. She's smart, conscientious, and funny! (And provides my favorite beverage, sparkling water. :-)) The new salon is very nicely appointed-- I LOVE the open-air feeling--although I'm sure that won't be year-round--and the parking lot is so convenient. The products they sell are truly top-notch. This is NOT just a neighborhood salon. It's a destination. read more

I absolutely love going to hair-o-smith. I have a very unique hair style and have always done it myself. Last year I took a chance with Jen, told her what I wanted, and she knew exactly what I was talking about, and did it better than I ever could. After not going to a salon for 10 years, I'm now going every couple of months because I can never see myself going back to doing it by myself. She's too good!! The salon is decorated in a very rock 'n' roll way and a girl even brings you a beer while you're waiting to get your hair cut. There's also other alternatives to beverages and snacks while you wait as well as a huge range of magazines. Since they moved I love it even more because it is really easy to find. They're right on Marshall from Hennepin. All the girls that I have met their have made me really comfortable and you definitely can vent about anything. No need to censor yourself or what you talk about. It's a place to bitch, talk, and get a really awesome hair cut. You can even book online and see when the stylist you choose has openings. They make it really easy and really fun. I wouldn't trust anyone else in the cities for unique hair cuts or dye jobs, and you shouldn't either! read more

It's a fun, relaxed place with friendly, dedicated people who know what they're doing! We are a family of five who has been going to Cathy for many years. She caters to our different needs and personalities without missing a beat. We have the 9-year-old chatterbox of a boy who wants the shortest possible buzz cut, despite his mom liking it longer. Cathy somehow manages to appease both parties. We have the 11-year-old girl who wants to "try everything before college". Cathy loves to help her explore the possibilities and try a new look, whether it's waist-length or a wedge. The latest is a pixie cut that inspired a classmate to get a pixie as well. Our oldest is a quiet 14-year-old with hair nearly to her hips, whose wildest experiment has been to get bangs. Change isn't easy for her, even when it's her idea. Cathy is both stylist and counselor throughout the process. :-) My wife has Cathy do some coloring, and plays around with different looks. I'm the dad who wants "the usual" but branches out now and then. We all enjoy the decor. It's great to go to a place that puts a smile on your face with its sense of humor. Ten thumbs up! read more

Leisa at Hair-O-Smith took me from drab to fab last night, you guys. Dull, lifeless BLAH to rich, gorgeous, rockin' locks! (seriously, the before & after pics are shocking.) It was a HUGE change, and I'm glad I could trust her to totally nail a difficult "makeover." Ok, besides the great haircut, color & Special Effects, the shop itself is just super fun to hang out in... If you're into rock & roll, cool chicks and fun '80s decor & style, this place is for you. Staff in general is personable & treat you well. I'm usually kind of awkward & quiet at hair appointments. But after they offered me a beverage of my choice (I picked a beer, of course), and we chatted in detail about the look I was going for, I felt comfortable and at ease in the chair. So much so, that I probably gabbed their ears off. (And all to an awesome soundtrack of rock, punk, new wave & hair metal, of course!) I'll be going back, that is certain. read more

I've been going to Stefanie for almost 20 years now (sheesh, I'm old) and every time I go elsewhere due to poor planning and needing last minute appointments I regret it. I mostly foil basic blonde and LOVE how she does it. Don't let all the hair extensions and more unique colors fool you, she can do it all. Her haircuts are my fave and when I don't know what I want to do with my hair she takes the time, listens and offers suggestions for a fun but not drastic change. Plus she's a blast to talk to and I always leave feeling cuter than when I walked in the door. Couldn't recommend this place more, everyone is up beat, positive, fun music playing, great place to go for any of your hair needs. The tasty beverages are the icing on the cake :) read more

My favorite hair salon ever! I used to go see Steph for extensions/color/cuts before I moved to Florida. Oh how I miss those days! Not only is she incredibly talented, but her spirit is so bright, and beautiful! All of the stylists have great talent, and attention to detail. It's so lovely to get your hair done in such a fun and positive environment. The prices are ridiculously good for the quality of service. I've even thought about flying back to get my hair done here because the experience is so one of a kind! A true jem of a salon that I will never ever forget. You can't go up from here in my opinion. Since going to hair-o-smith I been given some of the best haircuts and color jobs I've ever had(by Stefanie), in fact at this point if I go anywhere else I leave upset because I've been so spoiled. I have been going to Hair-O-Smith for several years now and I have never been disappointed with my hair. The salon is totally awesome with a fun, 80's rock-n-roll vibe. It's always reminded me of "Steel Magnolia's" but with a serious edge. The entire staff is awesome and fun and there's never a dull moment. Stephanie is my stylist and she rocks. I have been seeing Leisa for about a year now, my husband a bit longer I think. We are both very happy with the service we get. Everyone's been very nice & Leisa is very accommodating if something's not quite right, I can be very particular but not always the best at articulating whats in my head. I have trusted Leisa with my hair for 12+ years. I have thick, curly hair and not many folks can handle it. She can! The color is perfect, my 'natural' highlights look... natural! I have been going to Stefanie for 7+ years and you don't go to the same stylist for 7+ years if she isn't a freaking Guru with a pair of shears and a bowl of color.
