As we travel we try to stop in and enjoy what the local Indian Food has to offer, as there are several styles of cuisine from the Indian continent your never sure what your going to get (it's all good regardless). We arrived at 2:00 (14:00) and they close at 2:30, we were seated and our drink order taken. The buffet was still very well stocked so we went over and filled a plate. This is my 5-star lunch favorite in Amarillo. The buffet provides great variety for the Indian food veteran and a great opportunity for uninitiated to see what they like. People who say they don't like it have either never tried it or tried one dish. For the aforementioned uninitiated: Authentic Indian chicken dashes are not made with boneless, skinless pre-processed chicken breast. Usually the moist dark meat parts are used. Goat dishes are almost always prepared bone-in. Don't think "yuk! Goat!" Prepared in Indian style it is delicious in a fragrant and spicy sauce. Try a little of everything and enjoy! I ate here more than anywhere else in town during my 10 months in Amarillo. I loved the butter chicken and the mushroom dish (mushroom mutter?). My favorite thing was going to the lunch buffet, where I could try small bits of everything and learn new flavors I had not yet before acquainted with, while still getting to enjoy a fresh salad and a small amount of butter chicken. One of our favorite restaurants in a town dominated by the usual chains offering the same old, same old....Indian Oven offers a huge menu of choices always prepared to perfection. The exotic tastes, smells, and textures are a welcome relief from the steakhouses, BBQ joints, burgers, and Tex Mex that dominate the local scene. The understated exterior is forgotten once you enter the door to the very nicely designed, slightly upscale decor that has been created that only enhances the amazing food experience.... Amarillo is lucky to have such a fine restaurant to call our own, as it rates with some of the best Indian food I've experienced.... The Garlic Naan alone is worth a visit...!!! read more

This place gets 5 stars simply for the lack of competition in Amarillo. It's reliable, good, classic Indian food. Outside of the more unorthodox "Punjabi Affair," it's the only game in town for this type of cuisine. Come for the lunch buffet, right around 11:30 when it's most fresh, and you will not be disappointed. If I do come in for dinner, I'll order the butter chicken extra spicy, which provides a level of pleasurable heat you can't find at lunchtime. For those folks a bit tired of BBQ, steak, and Mexican, let's hope Indian Oven is around for a long time. read more

Oh my goodness! We are newly vegan and I had no idea where to go! I was missing Indian food so I called in hopes they could help my veganness! They told me to get the Medras Veggie and a fried appetizer with potatoes and peas, also the whole wheat bread with honey all over it! SO GOOD!! This is my place! We have had the buffet twice, and each time found it to be varied and quite good. As would be expected of buffet fare, sauces have added water, but no dish has ever seemed stale. The Indian Oven buffet includes both vegetarian and animal protein options, plus naan and a few dessert options. In general, their buffet fare is seasoned mildly, but there are several add-in options for those who favor a more incendiary plate. Their goat curry was decent, although the steam table pan always seems to be light on its meat component. Palak paneer, a personal favorite of creamy seasoned spinach and homemade cheese, lacked punch, but otherwise tasted fine. Indian Oven occupies a store in a strip shopping area, and isn't much in terms of visual décor-- a bit run-down in appearance. Further, at $13, their lunch buffet offers no bargain. I don't recall very much in the manner of service, but the gentleman who brought our beverages was pleasant. Its toned-down approach to spice, wide variety of choices and generally good food would make Indian Oven a good starting point to those unfamiliar with North Indian food. Just remember that, unlike Americans and European practices, Indian food isn't "eaten with the eyes first." Some of the dishes which are least appealing in appearance may very well become personal favorites. read more

They deliver for free for orders over $30. On the phone, I had ordered what I thought was just enough for my friend and I to get over the $30 mark and the lady said I was at $27 and should order additional Nan. I did so and when I got the bill it was $38. Of course, $3 of that was tax, but I was definitely cheated. . . which is sad because they've managed to slaughter the sheep instead of merely taking it's wool. I love Indian food and would have been a regular customer had they not fooled me to sell an extra order of Nan. The other problem with the Indian Oven is that it is a poor value. While I enjoyed the food, I felt cheated by the portion-sizes vs. the cost of the dishes. For example, Bhendi Masala (an okra and onion dish glazed in a buttery tomato sauce) and Chicken Curry both cost about $10. That gets you 2 cups of the dish and 1 cup of rice. If you want Nan, then that's $3-4 more as they give you one pancake cut in half per order. . . so no sharing unless you want to skimp. In total, that's enough food, but you've just spent $15 after sales tax for a meal that would cost $8-10 in Austin or anywhere else in the world that has numerous Indian restaurants. Plus, while the Bhendi Marsala, Chicken Curry, and Nan were delicious, our appetizer of Veggie Pakora (a fried vegetable fritter) was greasy and was mostly batter rather than veggies. It was also a greedy portion. We also shared the Kheer, which is literally a single cup of watery yogurt and rice pudding. . . okay, and if I'm going to be perfectly honest, some of my Nan tasted heavily of lavender. I assume this is a one-time mess-up because no one could taste this and serve it that way due to the soapy bitter taste, and most of my Nan was fine, but it deserves mention. Still, given all those complaints, I would have gladly paid the 50% extra over expected prices and just order from here less often (due to the poor value) except that they cheated me into ordering more than I needed to for the delivery. It's not much money, but it still feels like I was treated like a mark. read more

Indian food is one of my all time favorites and I've eaten it all over the world. I was very skeptical when my niece wanted to bring me to a spot in Amarillo, TX. In my head I was thinking "no way will this be close to authentic or remotely good", but boy was I surprised. It's a small joint that's hard to notice and I wouldn't give it points for the interior (hence the 4 start vs. five), but some of my favorite places are divey and haven't spent tons of money on an interior designer. I would like to see them take the beer bottle motif off the doors and spruce it up just a bit more, but if won't stop me from coming back here again for some good food. The service was great. Our waiter was very attentive, checked in often to refill waters and even brought my Mom (who's never had Indian) a free dessert sample to try. He knew I knew my stuff as he mentioned the desserts to her and was trying to explain it and I took over. She thought it was super sweet that he brought her some to try. The food was surprisingly good. It was authentic and meet all my expectations. I would have liked it spicier (more traditional), but my mom's a pansy when it comes to heat, so we only ordered medium. :) But all the flavor profiles were there. We opted for the Masala Chai, Palak Paneer, Mali Kota, Aloo Gobi, butter Naan, Garlic Naan and Paratha. The breads were some of the best I've had - so fresh, soft yet crisp and I could tell they used Ghee. The Masals Chai was perfect, with just a hint of sweetness to round out the spices. The Palak paneer was my Mom's favorite (I knew it would be) and I thought it was pretty good as well. My favorite dish of the three was the Mali Kofta - certainly right up there with some of my favorite restaurants I've been to. The dumplings weren't dry or mushy, but the perfect consistency and the sauce was creamy and well spiced. The rice was also cooked just right and not greasy at all. I wouldn't hesitate to take anyone who loves Indian or has never tried it here. And I would happily come back when I'm in town again. We ordered the veggie somosas, sag paneer, some mixed veggies in a curry sauce, and tandoori chicken. Everything was super good! The only thing that wasn't amazing was the tandoori chicken. There was two kinds of bread, both very good. I didn't see a dessert though. Perhaps I overlooked it. I will definitely go back. This place is very clean. Not a drop of spilled food on the buffet and tables were cleaned immediately, no food or napkins or dropped items on the floor. The health department inspection gave them 100. This is the best chicken tikka tandoori I've had. There's a weird phenomenon in this town. As soon as you get about two blocks from the interstate it seems to disappear (any Gaiman fans out there?) I have tried to implore the adventurous I-40 scene to turn (evil mariachi bands aside) nay swerve off the interstate and explore the thin dearth beyond. Actually, this little hole in the wall is second only to the Big Texan in I-40 signage! (joke, not a fact!) In addition to the tandoori, which you must get whether you intended to stop in Amarillo or not, I had the saag, the aloo gobi, and the masala. I loved it all. I'm no expert on Indian food ( YET! ) but this place is absolutely delicious! Some of my favorites are the "Navtatan Korma" which is such a flavorful veggie dish, the "goat curry" is phenomenal, and I love love love the saffron Rice. As far as Naan goes, I'm a fan of the garlic Naan I love the spices and flavor of the food here- MEDIUM is SPICY- it won't blow your socks off but if your sensitive to spice I recommend the "Cucumber Raita" it'll neutralize the spice and it also tastes fabulous. It's been years since we'd eaten at Indian Oven, back when they were still in the old truck stop on the east end of town. Frankly we hadn't been impressed, however we were in the mood for something different and decided to give them another shot at their new location. My how things have changed! The building was clean and the staff friendly. We were greeted immediately and courteously and our server quickly explained what was what on the menu. I already had an idea of what I wanted but it was nice to have the unfamiliar items described instead of just being handed menus and left to our own devices. Now I had read some of the recent reviews complaining about portion size and the fact that the naan was just one piece cut in half, so with that in mind we asked for two orders of the garlic naan, a lamb curry (American spicy) and a lamb biryani (medium spicy) plus two iced teas. I used to raise sheep and love lamb but it's rare I find it in a restaurant so I take advantage where I can. Our server brought us a couple of vegetarian samosas with two dipping sauces to try, which was unexpected and very appreciated. They were absolutely delicious. When our food arrived I wanted to smack the whiner that griped about how small they were. Yes the naan is one piece cut in half but they failed to mention that one piece is the size of a big dinner plate. My husband and I could have easily shared one. My lamb biryani was heaped high on the plate and his lamb curry was generously portioned as well. The Basmati rice was cooked perfectly, and the lamb was perfect in both dishes. The medium spicy is probably hot by a lot of American standards. They also offer hot in American hot and Indian hot. If you go Indian hot be prepared to sweat profusely, lol. The American hot curry was just right to me but had my husband sweating. I REALLY wanted to order the Kheer and Gulab Jamun desserts but we were totally stuffed by the time we gave up eating. When two fat Americans wind up stuffed to the gills and still taking home half their food, that should tell you Indian Oven will feed you well. So happy we gave it another shot, and we'll definitely be going back a lot now. :) read more

Indian Oven has excellent service! We were passing through and have wanted to stop here previously but weren't able to. We were greeted and seated immediately and had drinks on the table moments later. My partner and I ordered a couple dishes to share. While the menu doesn't state it, each entree comes with rice. We shared plain naan, palak paneer, and vegetable tikka masala. This is the first place I've been to that I recall the naan being a little dry. It was still good but didn't have a particularly crispy bottom and it's not brushed with oil or butter, that's why I found it a bit dry. The piece of naan was very generous in size however. Vegetable tikka masala varies quite a bit from one place to the next. This one was in a yellowish sauce made with higher quality frozen vegetables. It was ok but nothing to be excited about and knowing that's their tikka sauce I'd not order any tikka there. I prefer a more tomato cream tikka sauce. The palak paneer was by far my favorite dish and I'd definitely order it again. It was the perfect spinach creaminess and the paneer was very fresh. When I return, I will stick to the palak paneer and order my naan with butter, oil, or ghee if they have it and that meal will be 5 stars. Again, the service was great! I live in a rural area and don't often have an opportunity to indulge in Indian food. I ordered the Marsala Paneer with garlic naan, and it was amazing. The marsala was perfectly seasoned, with a lovely creaminess. I could enjoy the flavor even though I ordered it spicy...the spice didn't mask the flavor. The naan was a very generous portion, light, and delicious. The wine was nice, especially at only $6/glass. The atmosphere was perfect- subdued and peaceful with excellent service from all staff. Absolutely 5 stars from me! Some of the best Indian food I've had. We ordered the vegetable samosa chat, chicken biryani, navratan korma, and onion naan. Samosa and biryani are excellent, and the medium spice level has my mouth aglow in a pleasant way. Haven't tried the korma as we got so much food with both the samosa and biryani. The sauces that come with both are good too! The onion naan is very good, it's soft and has filling inside with great flavor. We ordered takeout, but the restaurant is set up for dine-in now with staff wearing masks and every other table blocked off. Would go back and order some of everything. read more
