I was extremely honoured to be invited last evening, to the launch event for:…read more Tulsi Restaurant, 51 High Street, Holywood, BT18 9AB Tulsi is also known as Holy Basil and can be found all over the Sub Continent. It is cultivated for religious, medicinal and essential oil use especially in Auyurvedic medicine and is also used in traditional Hindu ceremonies. The Tulsi plant is not uncommon in many Hindu households- it is truly an elixir of life. The very name Tulsi personifies purity and authenticity and this was very evident in the whole experience, right from the decor, the welcome and hospitality to the intimacy of surrounds and of course the traditional and very authentic North Indian cuisine. There was also some fantastic live music by Noel. The four partners have certainly put a lot of love and effort into bringing Tulsi to our shores, having been in N Ireland for over ten years. Indeed Chef Ram is a seasoned campaigner and in race horse terms is a pure thoroughbred when it comes to professional and superb chef skills. He has had extensive training in major 5 Star Hotels in New Delhi and Hong Kong before coming to Belfast over ten years ago. His ethos is perfection in quality ingredients and cooking methods, always seeking out genuine, authentic menus. After a meet and greet drinks reception we were seated and served a sharing non veg platter consisting of: Samosa, mint chutney, malai chicken, chicken skewers with sweet chilli sauce, mixed vegetable pakora and lettuce-my mouth is watering as I write this!!!! This selection showed me that Chef had it spot on and that this was as good and genuine as the food I've eaten in India!! Roll on the mains.... For our main course it was buffet service and again we were spoilt for choice: Clockwise (viz picture) from the soft, fragrant garlic nan I had Thai vegetable curry, cucumber salad, butter chicken, ghosth bhuna, daal makhani, aloo gobhi all served on aromatic pilau rice. This was pure and wholesome with none of the excess oil, artificial colours and sugar which is evident in many restaurants near and far. We had a rich and delicious Gajar Ka halva, which is a carrot dessert and topped off the meal fittingly. In short the food was delicious, true and authentic.......so enough said pay them a visit and experience the real Indian Cuisine. I would argue that this is certainly in the top 5 proper Indian restaurants in Northern Ireland and has a huge thumbs up from me!!!

The selection is amazing and my favourites include the Sizzling Seafood Balti and the Chicken Madras but I'm intent on working my way through the menu. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the servers are extremely polite and helpful. One of our party has special dietary requirements and they couldn't do enough to help us and make sure our needs were catered to. Worth booking at weekends as it does get very busy, especially as it's near the cinema but you'd probably be fine walking in during the week.

There was a very select few to choose from but the winner hands down was Tale Of Spice in Dundonald!! It won hands down on a number of scores. First it has ample free car parking. Second it is owned and run by a fantastic all Indian team from kitchen (Chef Gautam) to Front of House (Abhishek and Sunil). Third the food is as authentic as if one was sitting and eating it in any Northern Indian restaurant. The decour is modern contemporary with a subtle Indian touch. The staff are very helpful and knowledgable and chef himself a real expert. I asked him to make three dishes (two chicken and one lamb). He duly obliged but not before we tucked into fresh crispy popadoms with tasty dips-so many restaurants fall foul of serving oily soggy popadoms- a real turn off! Our three mains came out with two pilau rice, a nan and garlic nan. The butter chicken was creamy and tomatoey with no artificial colouring-and not overtly sweet. The Karahi gosht was divine with the lamb being tender, juicy and succulent. The chicken tikka saag was excellent-all three dishes garnished well with ginger juliennes and parsley and coriander.....just like one gets in Punjab. Alas the portions beat us quantity wise. This really is as authentic North Indian as you will get. A must visit place.

After an hour and a half, I then received a call from the restaurant claiming the driver had come to my address and no one answered the door. This is a complete lie. No one rang the doorbell, no one knocked, and no one called my phone. When I asked why the driver didn't call when the door was supposedly unanswered, there was no explanation at all. Now I'm left having to waste even more of my time dealing with an online app to get a refund that will apparently take up to a week. Dishonest, disorganised and utterly incompetent. Worst takeaway service I've ever experienced. Avoid.

Kinara is really great and with top staff to match it's a great dining experience! We popped in one evening and ordered our usual amount of food that would feed five people. We went for lamb vindaloos (my partner) and I went for the chicken Jalfreze. Both were excellent and I couldn't fault wither portion size or flavour. The rest of the food, the Onion Bhajis, Saag Aloo, Bombay aloo and naan bread were all as good as I've ever had. They also let you bring your own if you want which brings the bill price down which is great. Can't recommend this place enough!

One of the most unique dishes was the Horin-Er-Mangsho, a loin of local venison flame-grilled to medium rare and served with tamarind sauce on the side. The venison was super juicy, meaty, and flavorful, making for a delicious starter. For my main, I got the Kolkata Thali, described on the menu as "South East Indian Tapas." This metal platter came with a sampling of different vegetarian dishes including breaded paneer, aloo tikki (spiced mashed potato patty), stir-fried okra, shredded potatoes, dal (mixed lentils), chickpeas in tomato sauce, eggplant in tomato sauce, raita, rice, and plain naan. My favorite was the aloo tikki, which was nicely spiced--in general, however, most of the dishes on the thali were all toned down in spices to fit a more Anglo-Indian flavor palate. So while this wasn't the most authentic Indian food I've tried, the restaurant still made for nice trendy dining experience.

But the wine list in-restaurant is different to that detailed on Safa's website. Would be good to see it updated. I visited with 3 friends and we started off by sharing crisp, crunchy, fresh poppadoms. Unfortunately the accompanying dips were a little lacklustre as there could have been a bit more flavour to them. My Vegetable Pakora appetiser was delicious and my main of Ponnier Bhuna good but with a slightly strange bitter taste. My side of Mushroom Pilau Rice disappointed as it lacked mushrooms, being more of a mixed vegetable rice. Probably room for improvement in food flavours required for me personally. One of my dining companions thought the meat in her Goat Korma tough. Another that her Vegetable Madras not spicy enough, though on sampling it I thought it had quite a kick but could have been more flavourful. A nice little restaurant visually, but very quiet on a Friday evening with few other tables occupied so ambience was low. Nonetheless, our visit overall was a pleasant experience, enhanced by the friendly staff and great service. Probably a 3.5 star spot for me personally.

I was hoping to have a little more variety of main meat or veg options and maybe some sides saag aloo or naan to experience the offer. I would try here again as I know this style of event is different and sometimes difficult to cater for with so many taste buds!
