Polash - Vegetable biryani

We dined here twice over a week. It was recommended to us by one of the staff in the hotel we were…read morein. We were staying in the nearby Gloucester Robinswood hotel (reviewed separately). It's apparently a signature hotel, though dear knows why as the evening food there is dire, it's mismanaged and staffing levels are low. On our first visit we hadn't booked and despite being fully booked the deal was 'give us back the table at 7pm' and that gave us an hour. We started with poppadoms. I asked if they had the black pepper ones - most of the Indian restaurants we go to no longer offer them - and it was no problem. I prefer them for two reasons, first they aren't fried rather they are dry cooked over flame, and second they are peppery spiced. The portion of dips was tasty too. I got a lamb curry and the portion was generous, it was moderately spiced tender meat and very tasty indeed. My wife got tikka chicken pieces with a thick korma sauce and we shared a Peshwari nan and a pilau rice. The nan was the only disappointment as I like plenty of filling but the place is undoubtedly 5 star. The staff, likely Bangladeshi, are friendly chaps and they sure are kept busy as the restaurant was full on a Thursday evening. Pint of beer and a glass of rosé wine came in about £8 for the two. Second time, we booked. It was a Tuesday and it was still busy. We just had mains: a chicken and a vegetable biryani with a vegetable curry and a korma with a Peshwari nan. The biryani's were deliciously spiced and again generous portions. Again a pint of beer and a rosé wine. The only real downside is that parking nearby can be difficult. What a pity we don't have anything near this good at home. Polash in Hindi: Ocean; Name of a King; Leaf.

Excellent Indian cuisine at Polash in the Abbeymeade area of Gloucester. The restaurant is very…read moreelegant with modern decor, a small bar and an intimate feel. The staff here are really friendly and will make you feel welcome. I recently came in for take away and heard almost every customer who came in referred to by their first name. As a visitor from the US, I found the prices here excellent and very reasonable. We ordered an array of different dishes including; Aloo Gobi, Tandoori Chicken and Chicken Kadai, all of which were excellent. Even the Naan bread and simple rice pilaf were fresh, tasty and above average. Thoroughly enjoyed by dinner from Polash, the great prices and the friendly staff.
