I was really looking forward to eating here, and made sure I skipped breakfast and lunch to arrive good and hungry. I left hungry and disappointed. Upon arrival, I was the first person there and was told to sit anywhere that I liked. It took a good 10 minutes before anybody came by to check on me or ask what I wanted. The waitress was or seemed annoyed that I was there. There was no smiling there was no chitchat. I tried to ask her about menu items and she just kept asking what I wanted. The mango lassi had been prepared with what must have been expired yogurt, it didn't taste right. When I asked her about it, I was told that that's the way it's supposed to taste. I've had mango lassi before, at a lot of places. I really like Indian food. This did not taste ok. The food had been microwaved. It was not a uniform temperature. Some chunks were hot and some were cool. When served, the waitress half spilled the contents of one of the dishes across the table. It was messy and she did not come by to clean it up. It didn't taste any better than what I would expect to get in the freezer section at the grocery store. I had asked for spicy. I was very clear that I wanted legitimately spicy vindaloo. The waitress repeated mild several times and then finally medium. I said no I want spicy. The food was mild. I asked for the check and was told that I had to go upfront to pay. I did again, I waited another 5 to 10 minutes to even be acknowledged despite the fact that both staff walked by several times. Another guy came in and was served his takeout before I was acknowledged. I'm not sure what happened, I'm not sure why they were so rude... I tried to smile and be polite and was treated with really subpar service. I will not be going back, I expected more for almost 50 bucks. In looking at the reviews, it looks like people either have experiences like mine or something that is completely different. There doesn't seem to be a lot of middle ground. I'm wondering if this is a staff issue? I'd be curious to know what day the people that had a bad time ate? I'm almost wondering if the people that had a bad experience died on the days where the chef and primary staff have the day off and we were served frozen leftovers by people that really don't have any interest in running or working in a restaurant. read more

Came to Billings from Denver and thought I'd take my Mom to lunch at India Grill, my FAVORITE Billings spot. I'm sure glad I did. This family-owned and operated restaurant is still fantastic, after many years in Billings. My Mom is 95 and has lived in Billings most of her life and she thinks it's amazing too. I have lots of choices for great Indian food in Denver. This place rivals the best of those. So glad people in Billings have such a great place that serves excellent quality, authentic Indian food! We went to this restaurant hoping to sit, eat, and spend a good time together, but for the first time, our whole group of six felt disappointed and insulted by the rude behavior of the owner (Sikh paaji). The only reason was that we are Pakistani. When we arrived, we gave him good business--one full table order for dine-in and another to-go. Instead of serving us properly, he packed all our food in bags. When we politely asked why he was being rude and not treating desi customers with respect, he arrogantly said, "My customers are only non-desi, why should I care about desi?" He became angry, started abusing us, and when I picked up my phone to record his behavior, he shouted at me to put it down. After taking $145 from us, he kept shouting, came outside with a camera, and threatened to call the cops. Even after payment, he questioned why our car was parked there, despite us being paying customers. He clearly tried to create unnecessary drama. When we mentioned we were from Pakistan, he showed outright racist behavior, mocking us with comments like "Oh, you Pakistani, you Sindhi". I have visited many states in the U.S. and met countless Sikhs, Indians, and Pakistanis, but he is the only one who behaved in such a third-class, unprofessional way. My first sit down Indian food in a while and I really enjoyed myself. I think this restaurant has a future in Billings. I have two complaints that I will address later. My order (when at a new restaurant I always order everything medium heat): Mango lassi - just the right amount of sweetness and not overly thick like some places make it. Keema naan - dry due to being overcooked on one side but undercooked on the other, minimal Keema inside, will order aloo paratha next time. Tomato soup - I LOVED the flavor of this, I would say it's the 2nd best Indian tomato soup I've ever had (in Vermont). It was HOT in temperature and HOT in flavor so I burned my mouth and will finish it tomorrow since the spices are now painful to my burned mouth, oops. In California we'd call this amount of spice, Indian hot, it was almost too much for me. Vegetable samosas - perfection. The dough was flaky and golden brown with the right thickness to hold it together but not so thick it took over the dish. A little spicy too, I like that. I wasn't a huge fan of the mint or tamarind chutney (I tried them without the samosa) but the mint was the better of the two, neither was spicy. Butter chicken - I think they added the spice from this to the tomato soup as this was mild, mild, mild. Good flavor, I just prefer more kick to my dishes, especially with Indian food. Basmati - white, no spice, tender and moist, no worries there. After I was done eating (the restaurant wasn't closing and it was slowing down from the dinner crowd), something happened that I HATE. When I finish a meal I want to sit for a few minutes, have something to drink, contemplate life for a moment then leave. The waiter asked if he could take dishes away and motioned to the stack of plates, so I said yes and he took EVERYTHING from my table including my water glass. I would've normally said something but he palmed the opening of the glass to put it on his cart, I'm not drinking from a glass where someone else's hands/fingers have touched the rim. Period. Overall it was a good experience. Just be mindful your spice level may vary with different dishes. The waiter was trying to be efficient by clearing my table I just always prefer having a few swigs of water after my meal. I will return! LOVED the samosas and lassi. read more

I arrived a bit before closing time, but they fixed me up with dine-in chicken biryani accompanied by a small dish of raita, garlic naan, and a ramekin of kheer for dessert nonetheless. Interior decor gave a strong impression of being dark & under lit. Chairs were padded & comfortable, but a bit chewed up. Young man who was my waiter was courteous and conscientious to insure my meal went well & insured there was nothing else I wanted. Great job! Chicken biryani had nicely spicy flavor. Texture was mostly okay, except that one chunk o' chicken was *very* dried out & crusty and there were occasional clumps of rice that were quite dried out as well. The rest of the chicken ran tender & flavorful. And there was a *lot* of chicken in the dish. Portion was mondo!! Easily enough to share. Raita had lots of yogurt flavor and cool smooth texture, so worked well to mitigate the spiciness of the biryani. Naan was very, very pungent with garlic sharpness. (Hey, it's a good thing!) Texture was just right, being soft & toothy chewy. Would have liked 2 pieces per order instead of just one. Kheer dessert had good cardamom forward taste & excellent slightly firm rice texture. One demerit for small portion. At $4 it came of as less than good value for the price. Price overall felt a bit high. $24 for the meal, even though there was a bit of leftover for a doggie bag. read more

Would not recommend to anyone who wants authentic Indian food. No flavor, overly oily, and I was served chicken when I asked for paneer. I emphasized that I was vegetarian but was still served another chicken entree. The young waitress appeared lost and flustered the entire time. Tantalizing smells lure you as you drive by, compelling you to make a sharp U-turn and causing fellow drivers to scream in terror. Then they see you pulling into India Grill and they know. They understand. Mouth-watering lamb saag that will require many napkins to wipe up the drool, spicy butter chicken that makes you weep uncontrollably, cool and refreshing raita, naan so pillowy you could take a nap on it. Mixed review here. Small and poorly lit, has a very dingy feel to it. Clearly family owned and operated, with the "patriarch" having social skills slightly better than Attila the Hun. Still, the rest of the family seemed friendly if somewhat inattentive. However the food was excellent. Was recommended to try the "ghost lamb" by my server and it did not disappoint. We had been in Montana and Wyoming for a week and craving Indian food as we were passing through Billings. India Grill is the only Indian restaurant for hundreds of miles around. We called and asked what time they would be opened and a lady said 8:30 pm. When I got there, there was a man taking phone orders that told another customer they closed at 9:00 pm. Food was mediocre at best. They use left over tandoori chicken for their chicken tikka masala and butter chicken. The naan was the only thing that was good. The man taking orders and was the cashier was rude and when I asked if there was plastic ware, he pointed me in the direction and did not even get for me. This restaurant is not recommended because good Indian food doesn't take this like mess. read more

Back when India Grill first opened, this place was a powerhouse - all kinds of foods, smells, tastes, and it was amazing. After the pandemic though, things took a sharp downturn - the buffet was gone, never to return, and there were far fewer people working there. We went for lunch today, and was expecting great things, but immediately when we went in, we knew things were not quite a good as they used to be. There were many tables around that didn't have anyone in them that were still filled with dishes just sitting there, and it was COLD inside - bring a sweater! The taste of the food was really good......at first, but soon after we left, my wife started feeling really sick, and she'd ordered the same dishes many times, and I felt ill as well, so I have no idea what happened this time. The cold and dirty ambience and feeling ill soon after just really told me that things are just not the same anymore, and I think this put the final nail in the coffin for me going back there again. Very bad customer service. Rude and disrespectful people. They didn't give us the food that we ordered.. one item was missing from the order. We realized this after reaching the hotel and opening the packet. Checked the receipt and found they charged us for that. We called immediately and the man on the other side said he can't give us a refund as he doesn't know how to refund the money on credit card.(lol) Didn't refund our money. Called them after a day for refund and they stopped taking our calls. What a joke.....first don't give the food and then don't refund the money either. Food was bad as well!!!! There were lot of negative reviews about this place, still we thought of trying it. But IT WAS A BIG MISTAKE. Wasted money and time! Will never go to this place again. We wanted to try this place. Got there at 3:30 because their hours online said they were open. Pulled up...the sign says open. Walk to the door... locked. Hours on the door say the reopen at 4:30. We live 1 1/2 hours away, and we're starving, so we didn't wait. Please update your hours and turn off your open signs so people don't think you're open. This was the least welcome I've felt in a restaurant in a long time. We started our order with an appetizer "we don't have that" immediately and curtly responded. Then ordered two different vegetarian appetizers, garlic naan, masala chai, and mango lassi. 3 of our 5 items came out and the different server asked if there was anything else. Why,yes - the missing naan and lassi. Those finally came out later. Our mixed vegetable appetizer came out with chicken in the mix, which isn't cool. I'm very disappointed in my meal from India Grill although the food was very flavorful there were a number of issues. We are visiting Billings and staying in a hotel so we ordered this food using GrubHub. We are missing a drink (which the delivery driver said was in the bag), our chicken biryani had 2 small pieces of chicken, our soup had the consistency of dishwater and we didn't get any utensils! OMG!!! Visiting Billings, Montana for a conference and had a craving for Indian food. I found the Indian Grill on Yelp and was delighted to find NINE different lamb dishes alone! I ordered takeout Lamb Tikka Masala which came with perfectly cooked rice and ordered a side of garlic naan. The woman that handled my transaction was very pleasant, and I have to say this was one of the greatest culinary delights I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing! I was excited to try this place after such great reviews. My first impression was less than stellar. When we walked in (family of three) there was only one other couple in the restaurant. We hadn't been here before so we waited by the front to be seated. Immediately the male (owner?) gruffly said menus are right there (pointing) and then told us to sit. We sat and noticed right away that the menus were FILTHY. Not just my menu, but all of our menus had food and grime on them. I let that slide and went to pick up the salt... same situation. I was super grossed out (we ARE still in a pandemic). The female waitress was nice enough. The food was really really good. I had a difficult time enjoying it because I had the "ick" feelings from the menu and grime we encountered. I usually love the food we receive. We have ordered consistently for the last several years and generally been satisfied. I ordered lamb bhuna ghosht. Ordered it spicy. Zero spice and almost zero taste. The naan was ok. I will try again in a few weeks to see if this bad experience was an anomaly. My wife's dish was exactly to order. For reference, I have traveled extensively to the Indian subcontinent every year for 20 years. I love the cuisine and these folks normally do not disappoint. Something however went very wrong. Billings has very little in the way of Indian food options so I want to give this business 5 stars/ i really, really do. However, my go-to malai kofta was just a little off. Maybe it's a version I haven't tried yet-but I sincerely think that instead of paneer they used a grocery store cheese-almost like velveeta, for the koftas. And there were only three koftas for a 12.95 meal. Otherwise, the meal was good. The naan was delicious and I enjoyed the multiple options. I hope to try again in the next few weeks and see how the other options deliver. I did get this meal to go-and I should note that the high-end Indian dining establishments in places like Chicago do not include rice with the entree-so that could make up for the 3 koftas. read more
