Gateway Plaza (also called Shop Gateway Plaza) might be the largest power center in central Suffolk…read moreCounty. Located on the north Sunrise Highway Service Road (NY Route 27) between Nicholls Road (County Route 97) and Waverly Avenue (County Route 19), this shopping center is humungous and busy. It is so large and busy, that Gateway Boulevard which connects it from the Sunrise Highway Service Road at the South to Waverly Avenue at the northeast has two signalized intersections. The shopping complex consists of a phase 1 shopping center, phase 2 shopping center, a McDonald's, LA Fitness building, Home Depot Building, and pads. Gateway Boulevard also passes through the wooded Tuthills Creek Greenbelt before the Waverly Avenue entrance. Gateway Plaza features 38 shops and restaurants that include: Home Depot, Burlington, Best Buy, Michael's, Dicks, Ashley, Five Below, Marshall's, Game Stop, Bagel Lovers, Applebee's, Cold Stone, Nonna's Pizza, Verizon, and T-Mobile. It seems to have everything but a supermarket. I am very familiar with Gateway Plaza. I remember in the 1980s when it was forests and that a lot of the shopping activity took place at the older shopping centers at Sunrise and Waverly, Sun Vet Mall, and Downtown Patchogue. Then suddenly in the late 1980s when I remember George Harrison's "Got My Mind Set on You" being #1, Phase 1 of Gateway Plaza was built. This brought major big box stores that offered value such as Nobody Beats the Wiz, Service Merchandise, and Bob's Stores to the South Shore of central Suffolk County. From there memories were made. I remember buying Nintendo games and CDs from Nobody Beats The Wiz, eating pizza with my Dad and grandparents, enjoying a bagel breakfast at Bagel Lovers, and buying clothes at Bob Stores. In the early 1990s, it extended with phase 2, which brought in a King Kullen supermarket. Home Depot, McDonald's, would follow. After I moved out of New York, LA Fitness would go up as would a Burger King at the Waverly Avenue entrance. Here is my perspective of Gateway Plaza, taken from someone who had been very familiar with the Patchogue area since 1983. That is that this development was so big that it transformed the area from semi-rural to suburban. This could of easily been used in its natural state as a county park with the Tuthills Creek running through it. When I visit Gateway Plaza those memories of forests cannot be purchased at one of their stores. With that said, I do like Gateway Plaza. It has made life more convenient for people living on the South Shore. When deer and wildlife roamed on this acreage, it was necessary to have to drive to the Smith Haven Mall area to shop at some of these stores. The Smith Haven Mall, especially during Christmas season can be very hectic. Shopping at Gateway Plaza is relatively stress free. The shopping center is laid out well and there are the two traffic signals adding a layer of safety. Speaking of safety and convenience there is one flaw. That is the North Sunrise Highway Service Road entrance. Where there are two traffic signals inside the complex, there is a want for one exiting onto the service road. The flaw increases with the lack of an entrance from the South Service Road. The customer approaching from eastbound has to exit onto Waverly Avenue then turn north and left onto the westbound Service Road. Interestingly Gateway Plaza expanded when Sunrise Highway was expanding into an expressway. However, an overpass was never built. Recently, when I have returned to Long Island to see my Dad, I have been to Gateway Plaza a few times. There was one time when we went to the Verizon Store and one on October 20, 2024 when we went to Dick's Sporting Goods. All in all, I like Gateway Plaza. With the exception of a supermarket, I appreciate their selection and variety of stores and restaurants. Additionally I appreciate the low stress level of visiting and shopping in Gateway Plaza.
