This review is not for the campground, as there seems to be no direct profile for the Lake area…read moreitself. This is more for the water/lake access. We came here on a Sunday around 9:30am and met up with some friends. Like how they have a large parking area and it's extremely close to working restrooms and the walk from the parking lot to the water is very close. The lake access area is primarily coarse/rough rocks and sand. Make sure to bring your water shoes. Upon arriving there were so many geese. Heads up, if you go in the morning the geese come and there are tons of geese poop everywhere! Minus a star for this. It was extremely gross. But overall the area is a great spot for a fun relaxing lake day. There is a $12 parking fee. Cash or contactless payment works. There are park rangers that patrol around and are VERY strict about alcohol (and trust me they are literally looking at guests areas for any open alcohol) . They give a warning, and make you dump it out and second time they catch you get fined.

I've already written multiple 5 star reviews for Beals (here and on other platforms), and I won't…read moredelete them. You can scroll down to read one, if you want to. But this review is about some more recent experiences. I've been camping at Beals since I was 14. I made core memories here. I'll always remember my brother picking up a dewy leaf in the morning and yelling, "Look Jen, real Mountain Dew!" (We are from the Mojave Desert.) A few months back, I saw a sign at Beals saying they were hiring camp hosts, so I put in an application. I know this park better than anyone, most of the good pics on Google are by me, and it would be very convenient for me to stay here for April. Since I had no luck getting hired as a camp host for April (because I start my next paid job in May, and am only available to volunteer for one month at this time), I decided to try to get a reservation. My reservecalifornia account was completely locked out. I drove to the park in person this morning. I said I wanted to stay as many nights as possible in the same site. This is so that I can maximize my time taking care of business and still have time left over to hike and cycle the American River Bike Trail, which is one of my favorite things in the world to do. The camp host informed me quite rudely that he would absolutely not do this for me. I would have to come back every day at 3pm. I asked him why, and he said it's because they get a lot of transients. But this rule doesn't stop transients from camping here. It only makes their life harder by forcing them to check in in person every day and never knowing whether they'll have the same site from night to night. For a woman camping alone, this feels terrorizing. Why can't I reserve three nights on any of the many sites that are currently available? I asked the camp host if there was anywhere I could do this in person. He lied and said no. After being angry for a minute or two, it occurred to me to drive out to the field office and ask in person if they would do this as an accommodation for my disability. But the field office was closed today. Homeless people pay for their campsites-- they are paying customers just like any other campers-- and are trying to camp legally. Folsom Lake SRA is intentionally trying to make that harder just to be cruel, because the park management just feels icky about the fact that homeless people often use parks as temporary relatively safe places to stay. Although it is technically not illegal to discriminate against people for being homeless, it certainly feels like it should be. The majority of homeless people have mental illness or other protected characteristics-- so much so that discrimination against homeless feels like it's actually thinly veiled discrimination against mental illness, a history of incarceration, etc. This policy makes no sense at all because sites have to be reserved on the website at least 2 days in advance, but the kiosk is not selling sites 2 days out. This means a lot of sites are literally impossible to book based on silly rules that the park management specifically invented for the purpose of being cruel to homeless people. The job of park management is supposed to be to make the park as accessible as possible and as enjoyable as possible for everyone, regardless of protected characteristics. It's so disappointing that Folsom Lake SRA is prioritizing cruelty over accessibility.

We had booked a private tour for his birthday to meet the rescue animals who call this beautiful place home. Yasmin met us at the entrance and, after swapping shoes for some solid boots, gave us a very honest, very real, and very important rundown of industrial agriculture. Now, I have to add, neither of us are vegan or even vegetarian, but Yasmin proved to be an actively non judgmental, compassionate host. She walked us through the grounds, addressing each animal by name, and was full of knowledge and insight! After the initial meet and greet, we were off! We hiked across the beautiful grounds and met tons of sheep (Jet loved my partner!) goats, and pigs; all of the animals roam freely, coming and going as they please. It was actually delightful how so many of the animals came up to say hi and hang out out of their own volition! We brought some grapes for the chickens and they LOVED them! But oh my god, the turkeys. Wow, just, two little friendly, fluffy orbs that floated around our party showing off while Yasmin gave us an informed and empathetic story about them. She did that at every habitat; letting us in, introducing us (by name!) to the boldest of the bunch, and explaining how they ended up at Animal Place. It was an entirely wonderful, enlightening experience. Also, fyi, turkeys are so soft. I cannot recommend this organization enough. 10/10, please give Conrad an extra treat for me!
