One of the most important pieces of my wedding was for guests to have fun celebrating our marriage, and In the Groove Events got everyone on the dance floor. When I spoke with Paul (DJ Pablo) on the phone about the possibility of the wedding we spoke for an hour and he provided lots of helpful answers and I could tell Paul was thoughtful, enthusiastic, and a groovy DJ. Their wedding package was affordable and included drone video footage (which I thought was super awesome!). We told Paul that we had guests with a variety of ages and backgrounds and that we loved Latin/Pop music,but would love variety for different tastes. Paul helped us to set up music cues for various events in the night and was very accommodating in helping us with two live music performances by friends, and by playing "Life's a Happy Song" from the Muppets as we walked down the aisle. Paul and his team were professional and fun! Everyone from my grandparents to friends in their twenties loved the music and were able to laugh and boogie. This is a long awaited review since it's been about 6 months since we've gotten married. Up until this day, my husband and I still have our family and friends letting us know how much fun they had at our wedding. Although some of it was due to us not being super "cookie cutter" about our wedding and letting our own personalities take the lead, a lot of it had to do with our DJ and the vibe throughout the whole night. We had many dancers at our wedding (from ballroom dancers to hip-hop dancers) and DJ Pablo and fellow DJ (I can't remember his name) totally catered to us and our guests. We wanted to have fun and get the people moving and our goal was accomplished. The price for services was super reasonable. I had looked at a previous company (that charged an arm and a leg, semi stalked my husband on facebook by saying in one of our inquiry emails "Hey, it looks like we have mutual friends on facebook! I had a wedding this past Saturday at the Museum of Flight in Seattle and DJ Pablo was amazing! I had the unfortunate situation of losing my DJ literally a week before the wedding. I was frantically searching for a DJ because the music portion at my wedding, was one of the most important things to me. With no recommendations and hardly any time, DJ Pablo came to the rescue! In the Groove Events... I can't say enough good things about Mike! He is awesome. I first met Mike at my friend's 40th birthday, he was the DJ. Throughout the evening good music flowed, and Mike's enthusiasiam got everyone out dancing. That's always a good sign! As a wedding planner, I got his information. One year later, Mike brought all of his equipment and a great attitude to spin at my son's Elementary School Sock Hop. He was just as professional at this event. On time and prepared for anything! I'm still impressed that he considered there may have been Justin Bieber requests and he downloaded his hits, just in case. He played a wonderful mix of old and new hits, scratching out parts of songs that may not have been appropriate for the kiddos (even though they are played on the radio), and he took requests all night long. My husband and I got married in October 2011 - it was a big wedding with about 300 people, and our over-arching goal (aside from getting married) was to have a really fun party afterwards - we didn't want people to leave right after dinner. We were stressed that people wouldn't dance, especially since we have such a diversity of friends with different musical tastes. But somehow Mike made that the party of our lives - people did not stop dancing all night. We were literally kicked out of our venue at midnight, and the dance floor was still packed - we have millions of photos to prove it. I worked with Mike as I helped my sister plan her wedding. After reading reviews and getting quotes from Mike and other respected DJs, we decided to book In The Groove Events. Of all the DJs I spoke with, Mike was obviously the most knowledgable, flexible, and enthusiastic. I knew that the music would be in good hands. On the day of the wedding, Mike arrived early and was so friendly--also, his equipment is top-notch! He played music for appetizers and dinner and then easily transitioned into dancing for the reception. The reason to hire In The Groove Events vs. using an iPod is that Mike does a fantastic job of reading the crowd and playing music to keep all different types of people on the floor. People danced ALL NIGHT long! In fact, there were boo's when it was time for the music to end! :) After the reception, I heard guests approaching Mike and thanking him for the great music! DJ Pablo (Paul) was an awesome DJ. Our wedding was fairly small (~40 people). Despite being a mostly younger crowd (late 20s and early 30s), I was worried the dance floor would peter out after while. However, once the dancing started (~8pm), the dance floor was never empty until we had to leave (10pm). DJ Pablo knew our crowd and we got many compliments on the music selection. While we didn't do an extensive search, I think it would be hard to beat the price and get the same value. Our package was as half of some of the prices we were quoted! We felt like we were scamming him. We got some basic lighting, and it did add some atmosphere to the dance floor. He does pitch different packages (lighting, aerial drone shots, video), but he does listen if you say no. A minor point is that we seemed to have some communication confusion in the planning stages, but that was easily ironed out before the wedding, and occurred with some of our other vendors as well since there our many little details to remember. read more

Several months ago I was planning my wedding at Valentines in Portland, and Theronious Chunk was an obvious choice for the event's selector. I had seen him host many of my favorite nights downtown and was familiar with his DEEP collection of funk and soul grooves. When we initially discussed this booking, he carefully considered the wishes of my wife and I regarding the mood and pace of the sound selection that night, and then delivered far beyond our expectations. The day of the wedding he arrived early, completing his setup and sound check before the flowers or catering had arrived. Later, our guests were treated to an impeccable selection of sounds, progressing from warm soul and seminal r&b to the chunkiest and rarest funk anyone could imagine. I judge the success of a party event by how the dance floor looks. I chose Mike Smith as the DJ for the Miracle House Guild's 12th Annual fundraising auction for Seattle Children's Hospital's Uncompensated Care Program. After 11 years of putting on a very formal sit-down dinner event, we decided to change this year's event to more of a cocktail theme at The Palace Ballroom. With this change, we decided to have a DJ and dance floor. We were nervous about how our guests would take to the change...it all went way better than expected and one of the reasons was Mike! I gave him carte blanche with the music; I expected him to be able to read the crowd and figure out what would make them happy. Boy did he do that! Mike DJ'ed three events for us at our annual film festival (NFFTY, National FIlm Festival for Talented Youth). He played at our Opening Night screening at Cinerama, our Opening Night Gala at MOHAI, and our Closing Night party at The Cornish Playhouse. Not only was he so fun to work with, but he had a great gauge for our crowd and knew how to build the energy from the time people entered the events up until it was time to start closing down for the night. In The Groove did a wedding for a close friend of mine in Portland and I just had to give them a shout out, even though I didn't work with them directly. I can't tell you how many cheesy wedding DJs I've come across, which made this a very pleasant surprise. Impeccible music selection, professional demeanor, and everyone had a great time - even amid a group of admitted music snobs. I was at Herban Feast in Sodo Park for an event Seattle Magazine was putting on. it was a hawaiian themed party and a DJ from In The Groove was playing indie funk hits and was really rocking the party. I was really impressed on how the sound could fill such a large venue and still sounded fantastic! I walked up to him while they were doing giveaways for the party to ask him his name and if he did weddings because I would love to use him for mine this summer. Mike, was very personable and upbeat I could see why he has such great energy when DJing.
