Some things have worked better than others, some have been more expensive, I've tried cheap things, I've tried combination products but I still don't have the perfect skin. At the moment I'm using something called Quinoderm which is effectively just bleach in a lotion form to zap any blemishes. It actually burns my skin when I put it on and I think if I continue to use it as much as I am, I'll end up looking like Michael Jackson. That's why I've recently realised that I need to be a bit kinder to my skin (even though it isn't very kind to me). I've been so determined to get rid of my horrible blemishes that I'd put anything on my skin to make them go away regardless of how much bleach/alcohol is in it, I just want to see immediate results! That's why I've recently started trying out products from Neal's Yard Remedies. Everything here is natural so you can rest assured that it will work in harmony with your skin and won't cause damage to it. The cleaners, toners and anti-blemish treatments are very gentle and soft and unlike my Quinoderm, don't burn your skin. When I went in and explained my spot problem to a friendly staff member here I was pointed in the direction of the Mahonia facial cleanser and witch hazel water. The cleanser is great as it is fragrance free and very gentle so even if I get some in my eyes it doesn't hurt at all. Although the effects haven't been as immediate as my bleach filled anti-blemish buddy I am gradually noticing a difference and I'm hoping that the results will be longer lasting! It's very reassuring to know that I'm putting chemical free products on my face and for something that's natural the prices aren't too ridiculous either.

The well groomed receptionist and beauticians weren't as aloof as those in other salon despite and my waxer chatted to me all the way through as though we were old friends. The treatment itself was fantastic as the woman explained they use hot wax that they rip off rather than using cloth strips. This makes for a cleaner, easier and (marginally) less painful wax that lasted longer than others I have had. This is a more expensive place than I would usually go but worth it as it was a top quality job. They do give a student discount but I would say this is a place for the people of Edinburgh who have more disposable income than the average student. My plan is to ask for Zen gift vouchers at Christmas and head back for the pomegranate facial!

This was done in a really relaxed manner and I felt able to admit the cardinal sin - I use face wipes!!! Eek! I popped myself into the facial room, it was just heavenly. Beautiful décor throughout and the bed was extremely comfortable and heated, just bliss! The facial itself was amazing. Jo used a variety of products and techniques during the facial which left my skin feeling so fresh and soft. These included facial massage, lymphatic drainage and use of pressure point techniques which helps in reducing wrinkles and improves blood circulation. Bringing the facial to a close I received a lovely head massage. A few days after the treatment my skin was glowing and I decided to contacted Jo to request a product box. She devised a personalised prescription for my individual skin needs. This included products for an AM and PM regime, to help maintain and improve my current skin. She provided a detailed description of how to use each product; when and how much. I feel I have now turned a corner in my skin care regime and that's all thanks to Jo. I really trust her professional judgement on what products to use, and I now have the confidence (with her guidance) to deviate from the traditional high street brands. When it came to the facial itself we had a discussion about my skin, my main areas of concern, and what products she might use... As the facials are completely bespoke for each individual, there is an option for all products used to be natural - this is particularly useful for those who are trying to avoid all chemicals, for example, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, for those with particularly sensitive skin, or for those with particular health reasons. The facial itself was pure bliss, just over one hour of facial massage, pressure point work, lymphatic drainage and head massage. I didn't want it to end but was looking forward to seeing what the results would be, as I have recently been finding my skin very dehydrated, and have noticed my fine lines around my eyes have been much more visible. There was a little confusion as I hadn't specifically wanted either the 3pm or 3:20pm slot, I just booked them both for myself and my friend, however despite it making more sense for my friend to go in the first slot, they wouldn't change our times around. Although they do have electronic beds to adjust the height, which I gather for shorter people than me (5ft 10) this would come in useful, plus it is heated. Although I did ask half way through for the heat to be turned off as I felt like I was being cooked...but that's just me and heat! The massage itself was good, she did as I asked and didn't shy away from the painful parts (no pain no gain)! A complementary facial had been included which was basic but relaxing. I advised her of my sensitive skin so she used the sensitive lotions, which still stung slightly, but I've had worse! Arriving back at reception my masseuse, Natalie, had left a postcard advising me to get more massages to help with the problem areas, which was sweet, and giving me another excuse to get more :) Based on my experiences alone I would recommend them, however my friend who was with me didn't have such a good time. She didn't have a heated bed, which was a shame since she is the heat lover, and her masseuse didn't follow her instructions and performed a relaxing massage rather than one that tackled the knots. Overall, I'd probably go back if I was in the area or couldn't get into a more local one. It's handy as it is in Silverburn, up the stairs to the left of Yo-Sushi/Debenhams, if you are there for some shopping too, and the premises is very modern and stylish. Price wise, it was £32 for half an hour of massage, with the complementary facial. It's a little on the pricer side, I guess due to it's location.

I went to the wax bar straight afterwards because I wanted to cry at my nails. They gave me an appointment for the sat morning although I think they got me in after I showed them my nails. They were a joke. I felt sorry for them also as it's not nice having to put some one else's work right. They had no problems with this and just wanted to put them right for me. Sat morning and the service, the treatment was first class here in the wax bar. The girls were lovely and I think they were all pleased including me with the end result. They are now beautiful for a exciting and beautiful day on Monday. I could not be more thrilled with my nails. And this time I have shellac on my nails instead of nail Polish and a clear top coat that just came off with nail Polish. I am so so pleased I choose the wax bar and have to say they have gained a happy customer and I most certainly will go back.
