Back home, I had extraction facials (when they squeeze all the gunk out of your face) on a monthly basis, but I've had difficulty finding a salon that does them here in Edinburgh. Enter Edinburgh Beauty Quarter - I booked myself in immediately for a weekday afternoon.
The decor and atmosphere was pleasant, clean and professional (definitely on the "girly" side though) - relaxing music, nice smell and good vibes all around. The receptionist was very friendly as well.
However, I was less pleased with the actual service.
My appointment started 20 minutes late. I understand that things can run over, but an apology (or at the very least an acknowledgement) would've been nice. Instead the cosmetician acted like noting had happened.
The cosmetician was very eager to tell me that this wasn't just any old extraction facial, it was a "dermalogica" one. I'd already filled out a form while I was waiting (about skin conditions and such). When the facial finally started after 20 minutes in the waiting room, I had to sit through another several minutes of questions about what products I use, what brands, etc.
Then came the dermalogica "face mapping" where the cosmetician looked at 14 zones of my face and identified problem areas. To be honest, it wasn't anything I didn't already know by looking in the mirror. I was told several times that this was because the facial was customized, no two facials are the same, everyone's skin is different, etc. etc.
After that entire ordeal, the actual facial finally began. Despite all the fancy talk of each facial being unique, it wasn't different from the dozens of other facials I've had: they prep your face, squeeze the gunk out, put on some stuff to make it feel better, and you're done.
The only way in which it was different was that the actual extraction (i.e. the reason I was there) was not nearly as thorough as it usually is. This part took 10 minutes at most (and that's quite a generous estimate) whereas it usually takes at least double that amount of time. Unfortunately, that wasn't because my skin had magically cleared up. After the facial, I could clearly see at least a dozen congested pores that would usually be taken care of but were left untouched. Very sloppy work. I also wasn't too fond of the steamer that occasionally squirted boiling water onto me.
At the end, I had to sit through more than 5 minutes of a sales pitch - I'm used to cosmeticians trying to get you to buy a product, but here I was literally told to sit down and had no choice but to listen to the entire presentation. And while I'm used to the products being expensive, some of them were upwards of £40, which is just ridiculous.
In the end, I left 30 minutes later than I should've - which is ironic considering they spent less time cleaning my pores than any other salon I've ever been at. The entire thing felt like a ploy to get you to buy dermalogica products, and as though the actual extraction was just a minor detail on the side.
I won't be returning. read more
