Everyone loves a good pampering now and then, and you could do a lot worse than Frenchy's. In fact, I'd say you'd struggle to find better. They offer such a huge range of different treatments (as in, 28 different types of waxing alone) that you are immediately reassured that they know what they're doing and have plenty of experience. Which, in my book, is fairly important if I'm going to let them start smearing hot wax all over various parts of me. Their manicures make great presents. I buy them for friends for birthdays etc because they're good enough value from my present-buying point of view (£18 for the classic manicure, up to £32 for the luxury) but they're luxurious enough to make your friends think you spent a lot more than you did! Also, they use Jessica polishes so you know it's not all going to flake off after a day. But it's their massages that are the best thing about Frenchy's. I'm a massage junkie, so I have plenty of other places to compare this to, and their Indian Head Massage is probably the best I've ever had in my life. They do your scalp, neck, shoulders and face, and by the end you feel like you just slept for 20 years and then had a facial. You have to go and try it for yourself.

Frenchy's Beauty Boutique is a lovely little local beauty treatment store in the centre of the Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh. Frenchy's offer a wide range of beauty treatments, which although they can be on the pricey side sometimes, they are great value for what you receive. They offer an extensive range of waxing treatments which start at £10 (for eyebrows) and go up to £47 (full leg and Brazilian). Frenchy's Beauty Boutique also do manicures and pedicures, which start at £18 for a classic manicure, and £24 for the luxury one. I come here quite frequently for a manicure as the service I received was excellent and my nails look amazing for up to two weeks after the treatment. Eyelash and eyebrow tinting is available which starts at £7, and a spray tan is also on offer, costing £25. Frenchy's also offers a range of different massage's which include a whole body massage, an Indian Head massage and a pregnancy massage. The massage prices start at £25 for a back, neck and shoulders massage and go up to £60 for a total body care treatment which includes full body exfoliation and cellulite busting cream - it has something for everyone. The staff in Frenchy's are incredibly friendly and are prepared to stay late in the shop for you to get a treatment done. They are open Monday to Saturday, but treatments can be performed on a Sunday if an appointment is made before hand. Frenchy's is a great beauty place to go to de-stress yourself after a long day at work.

The manicure was great but it's not usually my thing. They do gelllish manicures here, which are beautiful and long-lasting but a real pain to remove since I found it takes a lot of time and effort to remove it yourself. I really liked their eyebrow threading which is only £6 - the cheapest I've seen in Edinburgh and they do a good job! I'd give the manicure and eyebrow threading four stars, but the massage was a two-star since it wasn't very good and I think they are completely overpriced (£55 for 60 minutes). Overall, the place is clean and comfortable and well-presented, and the staff are friendly enough. I'd definitely recommend the eyebrow threading!

But this was the worst massage I've had, out of about 40. It was my first in the UK and I am wondering if the gentleness is a part of the people here, but I need some force put into those knots you discover, not a gentle glossing over them. I did not relax much because I was lying there thinking how dissatisfied I was, and in the end my skin was oily and no more relaxed than when I entered. I was really nice and didn't say anything to her, and tipped because Americans do that, and she wasn't even pleased at the tip. Which was a bit more of a waste of money.

Unfortunately as a recent graduate it was a little out of my price range and too frivolous for someone on a budget. For me however, a leg wax prior to holiday time is a must. Given the unpleasantness of the treatment it was (almost) a pleasant experience. In a calm, clean, quiet salon I was lead to a warmly lit waiting room and offered a drink. The well groomed receptionist and beauticians weren't as aloof as those in other salon despite and my waxer chatted to me all the way through as though we were old friends. The treatment itself was fantastic as the woman explained they use hot wax that they rip off rather than using cloth strips. This makes for a cleaner, easier and (marginally) less painful wax that lasted longer than others I have had. This is a more expensive place than I would usually go but worth it as it was a top quality job. They do give a student discount but I would say this is a place for the people of Edinburgh who have more disposable income than the average student. My plan is to ask for Zen gift vouchers at Christmas and head back for the pomegranate facial!

When i moved to…read moreEdinburgh i was in need of a beauticians initially for my eyebrows to be done and theres quite a few salons in Bruntsfield/Morningside but Zen stood out because of there tasteful appearance and professional reception service. I first booked in for HD Brows which by the way is so worth it. But now i regularly have a sports massage , myriad facial and my hd eyebrows done. It is a bit more expensive than what i usually pay but the service of the receptionist, the beauticians doing the treatment are of such high standard. I now use their products on my face and it is a big difference on my skin. They do block bookings which can save you a bit of money in the long run, student discount and vouchers to purchase. I would definetly recommend this salon if your looking for a real pampering session, they also have branches over in Hanover street and Teviot Place.

SBL is owned and operated by Iram - who is great! So great in fact, I go about twice a month! (Iram used to work for a very popular/well known West End beauty boutique but decided to open her own business.) I regularly get my eyebrows threaded, manicures (shellac), and waxing done by Iram. For waxing (especially intimate waxing) - Iram is the best. She is so quick, makes it pain free, and is a perfectionist. She is also really keen to help you get into a routine to prevent any ingrown hairs and provides really good info on what to do at home and between treatments. My shallac manicures last at least two weeks and they rarely chip. (I usually get bored with the colour and get my manicure removed because my nails grow quickly!) I have been getting my eyebrows threaded for about 10 years and am super picky. Iram knows what is good for your face and adjusts the threading treatment appropriately. Iram also specialises in other beauty treatments, such as: eyelash extensions, eyelash tinting, make up application and spray on tans. One of things I really like is that SBL is text you receive a text a day before your treatment, which is a great reminder. I highly recommend Iram! (Just hope she doesn't get too busy now!)

For my friend and I, the name of this salon is synonymous with pain; she got her nosed pierced here…read morewhile I was a little more masochistic and opted for a bikini wax. Putting the pain aside, this place is a class act! Firstly it is strictly a ladies salon and plainly says so on their flyer, so absolutely NO men, though I'm not sure where she stands on anyone in between. At first, the lady who attended to us (I suspect she's the owner as well) had a very "don't mess with me" air about her, but she's actually very open to doing what the customer actually wants; a memo I believe many hair salons haven't received. For example, she made a sugar wax especially for my appointment, and was kind enough to tolerate our antics (holding hands, moral support etc) Located on Nicolson street, Mode is extremely easy to find, and apart from ear and nose piercings, as well as any waxing or threading, she's primarily a hair salon, and seemed to be quite an expert at colouring. The salon is made to look quite modern, as many do, but it also extremely clean. Good experience all round.

When I entered, the girl at the desk wasn't overly…read morefriendly and told me to sit down to wait for my appointment and, as soon as I sat down, said they were ready for me. A bit odd. She washed my hair nicely, although the water could have been a bit warmer and nicer. When I sat down with the woman for the actual haircut (I'm reluctant to call her a real stylist), I said I wanted a little trim of about an inch or an inch and a half and shower her how much to cut off so that it would still be below my shoulders. She seemed to cut and cut, and then be called away for the phone or the front desk, and then she came back and cut some more. When she had finally finished and changed to drying my hair, it felt like she was going to pull my hair out since she was brushing my hair (and scalp!) so hard. In the end, my hair was much above my shoulders and cut English-style so it was longer in the back but just below my chin in the front. Not exactly what I was hoping for, and the experience wasn't the best as there as almost zero chatting during the whole hour (yes it took a whole hour!) I was there. Luckily I had bought this haircut as a KGB deal, but I won't be back and I wouldn't recommend others spend £40 on a haircut here (their normal price).

This morning I called to book a BIAB nail application and a pedicure, just like the photo I sent …read more They said, "Sure, we can do that." The lady spent about an hour on my nails, but she didn't clean my cuticles properly. I asked her to make them look clean, but she barely touched them. She applied two layers of clear base and then two layers of a nude milky shade -- which looked nothing like what I had asked for. The result: bulky gel around the cuticles, uneven application, and one nail that wasn't even shaped round. When I pointed out that one nail looked off, she said, "Your finger isn't even." Her command of English was poor, which made it hard to explain what I wanted. I skipped pedicure cause I expected it will be a disaster. Since I had to rush to another appointment, I left but later called back to complain. I explained that I was unhappy with the result and that this wasn't BIAB. The man I spoke to told me to come back so they could redo it. When I returned, I explained again that the nails were bulky, uneven, and nothing like what I had asked for. They didn't seem to understand me, and he said, "She did a good job. I can remove it if you like, but we don't do BIAB color." I was shocked -- why didn't they tell me that in the morning before taking the booking? In the end, he removed the top layer, told me to wash my hands, gave me back my money, and left me with cracked, unfinished layers still on my nails. They weren't cleaned, smooth, or wearable. Overall: a complete waste of time, unprofessional, misleading, and the worst nail experience I've ever had.
