The reason for the one star is because Raymond unfortunately broke the first Golden Rule of hairstyling: Listen to the client. Started off well, with a consult on my very long layered hair, showing him photos of what I wanted and him agreeing my hair would do well with that cut. Next, we agreed that he'd take off 2" in length. Perfect. That's exactly what my hair needed. I won't be able to tell you if the haircut is a good one for another year because when I left, my hair was 7" shorter than when I arrived. Yes, 7 inches. From waist- length hair when I walked in, I now have pieces above my shoulders. It was a sneaky method of cutting so you don't exactly know what he's doing until it's too late. It's going to be a verrry long year waiting for my hair to grow back. Hopefully the cut will grow in well as others have remarked. God knows I'll be giving it lots of time. read more

I'm glad to have found this hidden gem in New Canaan. Ray is a master of the craft with a whimsical personality that makes the whole experience wonderful. I made an appointment for a cut and got booked for the next day. The whole experience was on pointed starting with a massage-like wash (Ray does a wet cut), a good recommendation on style, then a very elaborate session of Ray doing the scissor dance with my hair. Another incredible haircut experience with Ray to shed the disaster that became my hair from pandemic. After being cooped up with dead ends and lifeless curls (and a stint of pandemic stress-induced hair loss) for months, I'm feeling confident and ready to let the world see me again. Went in August 2013. Very easy to contact Raymond Fung,I just texted him. I told him what I wanted and he was very open to it and gave me a range of price for what I was asking. He scheduled a time that was good for both us. I even brought my friend to get her hair done there as well. He was very nice and approchable. As a first timer at this salon, I am SO grateful for a fabulous single process and haircut. I called one day to inquire about a future appointment thinking I'd never get in during such a busy holiday season but Raymond happened to answer the phone on a day he was closed and invited me in on the spot! Wow, when does that ever happen? For a working mom juggling many other commitments this was a true gift! He is, in his own words, "an eccentric creative," and his work style is different from any other I've experienced. I am always open to new ideas and I ask stylists for their suggestions so I like to think I am an easy customer, however, if they make my color any hint of orange, I will not be a happy customer! So far so good--no orange. I told Raymond that of course we all look fabulous when we walk out the door but the true test is when we "try this at home" and look very different. I absolutely LOVE this hair salon. This salon has been around since 1994 (if I remember correctly) and I've been a client ever since. Owned and run by a lovely couple, Raymond and Michaeline. You always feel like you are in good hands the moment you walk in the door. Raymond is quite the character and will keep you entertained the whole time he is cutting, coloring and styling your hair in the best way possible while Michaeline always keeps it real and will give you exactly what you want with a few finishing touches you will love. They have been such a pleasure to return to over the years. I grew up in New Canaan but now live in New York City and I STILL come back to them when I need my hair cut and colored. They are always up to date on the newest hair trends and styles. Raymond has a number of hair design books which have been published for hair salons around the world. I'm surprised they have not been reviewed yet but I'm also a little afraid to give my secret away! Raymond is a madman, a nonstop talker or rather ranter and he claims he hates doing color. Do not trust him with coloring your hair. Another major point is that they use lousy products in that salon. You won't get a gloss and your hair won't come out shiny and flowing. He's not cheap and you'd be wiser to go in the city to have your hair done by a top-flight pro. read more

Seriously.. after recently moving from CA to CT and not finding anything decent salon that even looked appealing enough to venture in with too high price for my blood.. I found Raymond from Yelp.. I absolutely loved it. He is pricey but worth it.. I shelled out 60% more on my hair than I ever did in Cali but I think he cut my hair much better and made me look better than even my regular stylist in CA that I had been going for years. Another interesting thing I found was that in Cali... usually after about a week or couple of washes, my hair would become dull and the same as if I hadn't had a cut in ages... requiring me to go back every 6-8 weeks.. if I didn't go.. I would begint to look like a fritzy haired zombie... Well.. not with Raymond.. I went there towards end of Feb and this is end of May and my hair still looks Fabulous!.. I am going to go back next week to get my hair colored and get a trim. His price is more reasonable than other pricey joints in this area so technically, it's worth it anyway.. but the fact that he makes you look good, your hair feel wonderful, and you don't have to shell out big bucks earlier with others.. he is so worth it..
