I live on the border of NY and NC, but normally when I needed hair care I went to Manhattan. I decided it needed something local so I closed my eyes and my finger landed on Raymond's salon. Wow! I never get lucky. The color was terrific. I was on the fence about a cut and he talked me out of it, explaining that too many stylists are scissor Happy. He cleaned it up a little, it looked great and it saved money. Not for nothing, but this guy is hilarious and his energy? I wish he'd bottle it. read more

So surprised to see such positive reviews--I would give zero stars if possible. I had the worst haircut of my life by Raymond! I have curly hair and asked for some layers to help improve the shape but keep the length. I waited 40 minutes and when he finally got to me, he started cutting haphazardly, grabbing handfuls of hair and chopping them off, saying "This is dead, this dead, this is dead" as he did it. I am not exaggerating when I say I lost 5 inches of hair, and even worse, the right side was about 2 inches shorter than the left when he was finished. Was he having a bad day? Who knows?! I would never go back and it has taken me a year to be able to trust anyone with my hair after this horrible experience. read more

Raymond is the best! He's an artist, and he is hilarious! I see him anytime I'm in town to visit family.

I just wanted to say this guy is really good! Great location, right in the heart of New Canaan, and I got a great haircut and highlight for a reasonable price. I wouldn't hesitate to give him a try! read more

Raymond is the best! Never had a hair stylist who cared so much about the work he created. He works with you and even teaches you styling tips! Highly recommend his services if you want a fantastic cut and amazing conversation. read more

have been getting my haircut by Raymond for over 10 years now. His haircuts are amazing because of how they grow back so beautifully. 10/10 recommend if you're in the area and looking for someone who really understands the art of the haircut. read more

When former hair stylist of 30 years retired, I despaired of finding a stylist that could cut & style short hair. It took many months of trying hair stylists recommended by other people before finding Raymond! He is a ninja when it comes to short hair cuts. Another review said that Raymond's hair cuts are a work of art! I couldn't agree more. I'll remain loyal to Raymond until he retires, which I hope is a very long time from now! I highly recommend Raymond for both his hair cuts and wonderful hair coloring. read more

Raymond gives a 5-star haircut each time. Even if you think it may be too short when you walk out, it always grows in well. My whole family has gone to this guy for 30+ years and we're huge fans. read more

I have been getting my hair cut by Raymond for nearly ten years. Raymond knows just what to do every time he cuts my hair. Every haircut is a work of art. He takes his time and always works carefully and thoroughly. What is also significant is that Raymond cuts hair with pure joy and enthusiasm, as if every haircut is the first haircut. I will always stay loyal to Raymond, and highly recommend him for anyone. My husband and my children also go to him, and he does a great job with them as well. read more

I moved out of New Canaan area, and tried a few hair dressers closer to my new home. But nobody is as good as Raymond at Image Design Group. He is creative, has great attention to detail, and keeps me laughing while cutting my hair. Thanks, Raymond! read more

Raymond is the absolute best. High quality cut, great conversation, and amazing flexibility. Highly recommend!

The reason for the one star is because Raymond unfortunately broke the first Golden Rule of hairstyling: Listen to the client. Started off well, with a consult on my very long layered hair, showing him photos of what I wanted and him agreeing my hair would do well with that cut. Next, we agreed that he'd take off 2" in length. Perfect. That's exactly what my hair needed. I won't be able to tell you if the haircut is a good one for another year because when I left, my hair was 7" shorter than when I arrived. Yes, 7 inches. From waist- length hair when I walked in, I now have pieces above my shoulders. It was a sneaky method of cutting so you don't exactly know what he's doing until it's too late. It's going to be a verrry long year waiting for my hair to grow back. Hopefully the cut will grow in well as others have remarked. God knows I'll be giving it lots of time. read more

As usual, Raymond is amazing. And Alex, his tried and true employee, is always a pleasure. Raymond's been "sculpting" my hair for 20+ years (and sometimes filming it for his YouTube vids, w my permission, of course) and I continue to get compliments well after the cut has grown out months later. Raymond is my first (and last!) hair designer to use the dry method of cutting. Why has no one else done this? Makes perfect sense and he's refined it into an art form, and instructional method that should be the foundation of every hairdressing academy. He deserves the Pulitzer Prize for Hair Design/Instruction. read more

Another great haircut from Ray. Always takes his time and is very particular about his work! Truly a hair artist! His haircuts last a long time as well. You won't be disappointed. read more

Raymond is a master of his craft and really takes the time to make sure what you want is what you get. And if you're not sure he'll find a way to make you look and feel more confident then you were walking in. A great conversationalist and always funny, I've been going here for years now and will continue to do so! The best of the best I wouldn't want anyone else to cut my hair read more

I desperately needed a consult to figure out what to do with my post-chemo grow out. Ray was very gracious in his comments and he went on to cut and style my hair. I am so grateful and I have received so many compliments. Thank you for helping me move forward in this new season of my life. read more

I am Chinese, so my hair tends to be thick, straight, and more coarse which can make it difficult for many hairdressers to cut especially to my exact liking. Raymond is the only person I trust to touch my hair!! He knows exactly how to cut and style my hair, and always does it perfectly according to my requests. I walk out of his salon happy and confident every single time! He's also absolutely hilarious and always goes the extra mile for his clients! Could not recommend more!! read more

Ray is the best! He is a true artist and extremely knowledgeable and skilled in his craft. He has been cutting my hair since 2018 and he always does a wonderful job! read more

My mom, sister and I have been going to Raymond to get our hair cut (and later colored :) ) since 1996! He always understands and delivers on exactly what I am looking to do. I trust him completely, more than any other hairdresser I have ever been to. He is always very accommodating, very generous with his time. 100% recommend Raymond and his staff at Image Design Group! read more

I've been bringing my son to Ray for a few years now and he always looks fabulous when we leave. I recently decided to treat myself to a cut from Ray. I definitely felt like I needed a change but more importantly, a vision. He did not disappoint. He provided me with a wide ranging discussion of what he would do and why. He told me how to maintain my hair and I left feeling put together. I have to learn some new skills and make some new habits but the effort will pay off. I'll be working on color issues next. He's very outspoken about all sorts of things and often hilarious, and he's really an artist with hair. read more

New to town last fall and looking for a haircut, the Yelp reviews convinced me to try Raymond. He transformed my hair style from mushroom-like to fabulously buoyant. Still the same age (in my 80's) from the time I walked in the door to when I walked out, I went from dowdy to divine in one hour. I agree with other reviewers - it's Raymond for life for me. He is an artist with his scissors, brain and mouth going a mile-a-minute, and he doesn't charge for the entertainment. And the cut lasts longer - and better - than any I have ever had. Worth every penny (err, dollar) spent. Highly recommended! read more

I'm glad to have found this hidden gem in New Canaan. Ray is a master of the craft with a whimsical personality that makes the whole experience wonderful. I made an appointment for a cut and got booked for the next day. The whole experience was on pointed starting with a massage-like wash (Ray does a wet cut), a good recommendation on style, then a very elaborate session of Ray doing the scissor dance with my hair. The cherry on the top was the witty chat with Ray. And my hair looks great of course.:) read more

WOW! This place is fantastic. My friend recommended Ray Fung and I am so happy I took her advice. This is the best haircut I have had in years. My hair looks exactly how I would have wanted it to if i knew how to put it into words. There is movement and style and everything you could ask for in a good design. Ray is friendly and makes you feel at home in his salon. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a refreshing new hair design or a spruced up old cut. The man works miracles! read more

I have been getting my hair cut by Raymond at IDG for almost 20 years now - he is seriously the BEST hairdresser alive! His unique technique is the only thing that works for my hair (which is sometimes curly, sometimes wavy, sometimes straight). I love my long hair, and one of his haircuts can last me through almost an entire year! (I usually only have to go for 1 haircut every 10 months!) He and his staff are always welcoming and entertaining, and it's always a pleasure going to IDG for my haircuts! read more

Went in August 2013. Very easy to contact Raymond Fung,I just texted him. I told him what I wanted and he was very open to it and gave me a range of price for what I was asking. He scheduled a time that was good for both us. I even brought my friend to get her hair done there as well. He was very nice and approchable. Very talented and skillful, he obviously knows how to cut hair and color!! He gave me slight highlights and I'm very happy with them. They look very natural. ALSO he gave me a student discount, and gave me a shampoo bottle for free!! Will probably go back read more

This man is a riot and beyond intelligent when it comes to hair. He is hysterical and makes everyone feel good about themselves, truly. I told him just a trim, and he did take off more than I would have thought I liked, but it was actually so amazing and he was so right about what complimented my hair structure and my face structure. Highly recommend. read more

Another incredible haircut experience with Ray to shed the disaster that became my hair from pandemic. After being cooped up with dead ends and lifeless curls (and a stint of pandemic stress-induced hair loss) for months, I'm feeling confident and ready to let the world see me again. Ray is so skilled at cutting hair you end up with exactly what you were hoping for and beyond what you could have asked. Perfect length and layers every time and I always learn a new thing or two about how to maintain and style my hair. I've been traveling into New Canaan from NYC to see Ray for 7 or 8 years now and wouldn't trust another soul to cut my hair. The salon is always clean, they are following COVID protocols, and services are all very reasonably priced. Visiting is always such a relaxing and lovely experience and I get to walk out with supermodel hair every time! read more

AMAZING! I started going to this place about a year ago and I'm so happy I did. Raymond is amazing! His passion for his craft makes me completely trust him with every cut he makes. He thinks of his job as more of an art form than a way of paying the bills and if you pay attention to him it is very apparent. I would compare it to watching a sculptor carefully perfecting their masterpiece. Every person I have recommended him to has become a regular at his salon and therefore if your still reading this, book an appointment you won't regret it! read more

I have been going to raymond for over 10 years now and have always had an amazing experience. His style allows your hair to grow back in a stylish way and looks beautiful and healthy. Highly recommend to anyone looking for anything to do with hair - cut, styling, coloring...etc. read more

I am so excited and happy with the cut I received from Raymond yesterday. I have very thick hair which is difficult to cut and a challenge for many - but not Raymond! He listened to what I wanted to do and delivered. He was able to layer my hair and thin it out and the result is spectacular. I was his last appointment of the day and he was able to spend the time he needed to make it look perfect. I really appreciate his efforts and was impressed that he didn't try to rush the process. He's a true artist and perfectionist and I couldn't be happier or recommend him more highly! Thank you Raymond!! read more

I absolutely LOVE this hair salon. This salon has been around since 1994 (if I remember correctly) and I've been a client ever since. Owned and run by a lovely couple, Raymond and Michaeline. You always feel like you are in good hands the moment you walk in the door. Raymond is quite the character and will keep you entertained the whole time he is cutting, coloring and styling your hair in the best way possible while Michaeline always keeps it real and will give you exactly what you want with a few finishing touches you will love. They have been such a pleasure to return to over the years. I grew up in New Canaan but now live in New York City and I STILL come back to them when I need my hair cut and colored. They are always up to date on the newest hair trends and styles. Raymond has a number of hair design books which have been published for hair salons around the world. I'm surprised they have not been reviewed yet but I'm also a little afraid to give my secret away! Anyway, def recommend this salon to anyone who wants a high end cut, coloring, or styling! read more

This place is a true dump. He's been in that location for 20 years and it looks like everything came from the Salvation Army. Raymond is a madman, a nonstop talker or rather ranter and he claims he hates doing color. Do not trust him with coloring your hair. Another major point is that they use lousy products in that salon. You won't get a gloss and your hair won't come out shiny and flowing. He's not cheap and you'd be wiser to go in the city to have your hair done by a top-flight pro. read more

Seriously.. after recently moving from CA to CT and not finding anything decent salon that even looked appealing enough to venture in with too high price for my blood.. I found Raymond from Yelp.. I absolutely loved it. He is pricey but worth it.. I shelled out 60% more on my hair than I ever did in Cali but I think he cut my hair much better and made me look better than even my regular stylist in CA that I had been going for years. Another interesting thing I found was that in Cali... usually after about a week or couple of washes, my hair would become dull and the same as if I hadn't had a cut in ages... requiring me to go back every 6-8 weeks.. if I didn't go.. I would begint to look like a fritzy haired zombie... Well.. not with Raymond.. I went there towards end of Feb and this is end of May and my hair still looks Fabulous!.. I am going to go back next week to get my hair colored and get a trim. His price is more reasonable than other pricey joints in this area so technically, it's worth it anyway.. but the fact that he makes you look good, your hair feel wonderful, and you don't have to shell out big bucks earlier with others.. he is so worth it.. Go there and let him have fun with your hair.. You won't be sorry!!.. Thanks. read more

Raymond is the best, I have been going to him for years and regret not reviewing him earlier. It is hard to find a hairstylist that will keep your hair looking fresh while making you laugh. He knows what he is doing and makes sure that you have fun with your hair, even after you leave his studio. I do not go to any other stylist and trust him enough that I allow him to have fun with my hair. He is the best, I highly recommend him if you are in the area. read more

I wholeheartedly agree with other people's comments about how Raymond's haircuts "bloom." It's the reason why I've been going to him for too many years to count and why I'd never go anywhere else! read more

Raymond Fung (owner) is absolutely the best! I have been going to Raymond for almost 10 years now, and will continue going as long as I can! Raymond colors and cuts my hair. Costly but worth every penny. Raymond is a true artist that takes his time to do the right thing and explain everything. He's also a big ham and a great relater. Staff is good, also. I've never had baliage look so good! read more

Raymond gives the best haircut I've ever had. Highly recommend.

As a first timer at this salon, I am SO grateful for a fabulous single process and haircut. I called one day to inquire about a future appointment thinking I'd never get in during such a busy holiday season but Raymond happened to answer the phone on a day he was closed and invited me in on the spot! Wow, when does that ever happen? For a working mom juggling many other commitments this was a true gift! He is, in his own words, "an eccentric creative," and his work style is different from any other I've experienced. I am always open to new ideas and I ask stylists for their suggestions so I like to think I am an easy customer, however, if they make my color any hint of orange, I will not be a happy customer! So far so good--no orange. I told Raymond that of course we all look fabulous when we walk out the door but the true test is when we "try this at home" and look very different. I also told him that if I cannot "do this at home" and have a hard time with my new style that I'll be back for a redo and he agreed. I'll keep you posted! Happy holidays everyone! read more
