My Tailor

My Tailor

(4 reviews)

Crouch End

My zipper on my winter jacket had broken and I needed a tailor to fix it. Alas, there was no…read morereviews on either Yelp or any of the other local review websites that could tell me where I should go...and so I asked the clerk in the local charity store, if she knew of any good tailors around here: and she did! And this is how I got introduce to my new tailor! Funny, that they are actually called "My Tailor"...and I really felt right at home and at ease with them when I entered the store. I loved seeing all the colourful fabric rolls; I loved watching the busy seamstress sewing on the machine in the window; and I also enjoyed watching the tailor take measurements of another customer. When it was my turn, I quickly explained my situation and the tailor promised me to have it done by the next day (for £20). I thus came back the next day and indeed was very happy with the result - they had chosen a zipper that matched the fabric of my jacket and all the seams were very tidy (as far as my eye could tell). I will definitely be back when I need something else to be tailored! Good job!

As a generally enthusiastic person I never leave one star reviews. But My Tailors in Crouch End is…read morea rare breed and did such an terrible alternation job. Just don't go there! I took an evening gown and a shorter cocktail dress to be shortened. The evening dress had two layers, and the very visible underskirt came back looking like a person in a blindfold cut it with kiddy scissors. Which is exactly what happened. There was no finishing. It had literally just been cut with scissors, and not even in a measured way, just jagged and uneven. I should have known. When I put the dress on initially so the shop could tailor it to the correct length, the seamstress started cutting straight away with scissors before I could utter the words 'how much will this cost?'. Snip snip snip. Little did I realise that snipping would also be the final finish too. I would have expected pinning and measuring from other seamstresses, and any delicate cutting to be carried out whilst not wearing it. The results can be seen in the pic. The other dress also wasn't right either. They bright inner lining was too long and peaked out, but I should be pleased that it had actually been sewed though. My Tailor did fix the shorter dress so the lining did no longer peak out. However although they did 'smooth out' the finish of the longer dress, they did not sew it. It was just cut by scissors, and frayed (despite them telling me it wouldn't) straight away on the first wear. When trying to get money back I was told this was "excellent service" and they only returned £12 of the £50 paid in total. A good place to go if you want a half arsed job and clothes coming back reeking of cigarettes. Do yourself a favour, use somewhere else.

Archway

Resurrection boutique is a very charming vintage shop. It's…read morecomprised of two small rooms filled with mainly pre-eighties fashion (all in excellent condition, though), and a little bit of contemporary fashion (again in great condition, and mostly from higher end brands). I have seen some male clothing there, but with the racks and racks of lovely vintage dresses, the main focus definitely seems to be ladies clothing. The owners are obviously very picky about the quality and origin of the items that they choose, so the prices are on the higher end, too. I like that the store carries a good mixture of flamboyant clearly very vintage designs and designs which can be smoothly translated into current era even if you are not an outright vintage style lover. As the Archway location is tucked away from the busiest shopping streets, I find that the turnaround of the items is not as quick as in some more central stores, but still, new items are added quite often. Although I have never tried it, I must give a shoutout to the tailoring service offered here as well, as I chatted to a customer who used it (and saw her try her garment in progress out), and it seems that this tailoring is very popular in the area. The owner won a Debenhams Golden Star Award for wedding fitting and alterations, so you should not have to worry about giving her even the more delicate items. The store is nicely organized and the owner is very welcoming. I like coming back to this store and encourage you to try it out.

This place was recommended by someone on a local neighbourhood board for tailoring, so I took in a…read morecouple of pieces of clothing that needed something more complicated than just a neckline change or a hem alteration. The lady who does the work certainly acted as if she knew exactly what to do and was an expert. She lectured me about the fabrics I had brought in as if I didn't know what crepe was, commented freely on her opinion if the labels of the items, corrected me if she felt I had spoken incorrectly about what I wanted. I was taken aback, but thought that if she did a good job, I would be prepared to put up with a superior attitude (which the other tailors I've used never had). Well, she got everything wrong. I had to bring back three skirts because she didn't listen to what I had asked for and had measured wrong to boot - they hung off me. And then, when I went to pick them up, she wasn't there. Her teenage son was the only person in the store and though polite, he was very awkward in finding the clothes, told me to come back despite my having had a text to say the items were ready... I insisted as it wasn't convenient for me to come back and we quickly found them. But really, this shouldn't happen! The biggest case of someone talking a great game (and being brusque and rude to the client while doing so) but being absolutely crappy at their job I've ever come across. I am back to the lovely lady from Sam's Dry-cleaning down the Holloway Road, who had to fix her mistakes (because yes, after two tries the skirts still weren't right). In short - avoid!!!
