I've been waiting to write this review for a while. As a loving Yelper, I had to wait until Yelp launched in Italy....more importantly, I had to wait until there was a listing for Il Vecchio Dado!
This charming little restaurant changed my life and perception of food in Italy!
It's located on the main canal in Pisa. I stumbled upon this restaurant as I was walking towards the main cathedral and the leaning tower.
The restaurant has been in business for a number of years, and obviously has changed hands several times. Rumor has it that many, many moons ago, Casanova himself dined here.
The food is fantastic. I ate here twice on my trip. The first time, I had a simple gnocchi dish, the the little gnocchi's were pillowy perfect! The second time, I had a frutta di mare pizza. Basically, the pizza had everything from the sea on it...sooo good.
The pizza had clams (in the shell), shrimp, lump crab meat, fresh fish chunks and scallops. it wasn't the Domino's style of pizza. You had to eat the toppings first. Then the crust.
If you ever find yourself in Pisa, PLEASE try this restaurant. It's a gem. read more
