Salted anchovies and trofie al pesto
Alice W.

You know what is the perfect complement to the beauty and charm of Cinque Terre? The food! Cinque Terre is known for a few staples: seafood (especially anchovies), pesto, focaccia, and farinata. My friend and I decided that we must sample some of the local specialities while we were in Cinque Terre. At Vernazza, we saw Il Baretto and decided to try it. Only later did I find out it was featured in my Rick Steves' Italy guidebook. Even better! We ordered a plate of salted anchovies, or accuighe as it is called here, and trofie al pesto to share. If you've had anchovies in the States and hate it, try them fresh here! It makes all the difference. The anchovies were very, very good. I could instantly tell they were fresh and caught that day instead of the cured-in salted ones I've had in the U.S. Cinque Terre is also the birthplace of pesto. Pesto on trofie is delicious! Trofie is a Ligurian pasta made with flour and water but no eggs and rolled into little squiggly shapes. It's best served with pesto. Definitely try trofie because it's nearly impossible to get outside of the Cinque Terre/Liguria region. And it is absolutely fantastic! We met someone who was born in nearby La Spezia here and he loves this restaurant, so we knew we hit jackpot. Great little spot in Vernazza. We sat outside and people watched. Service was great too.

Pippo a Vernazza - trofie & pesto, pasta al sugo di orata

Pippo a Vernazza

This is a popular spot in Vernazza for pasta! We arrived around 12:40 pm and there was a small line…read moreto order. We ended up getting our food at 1:05 pm, so the wait wasn't too much. There's a couple of tables outside the restaurant, but it can be hard to snag a table since a lot of people are waiting around. We were able to sit at a bench nearby, but for the most part, people were just standing around and eating. The pesto pasta is their most popular order, it's includes the local Ligurian pasta: trofie, distinguished by its thin and twisted shape. The trofie & pesto was delicious and comforting, as a pesto enjoyer. The other pasta dish we got was the pasta al sugo di orata, a tomato sauce pasta with seafood. This dish was also delicious and I enjoyed the topping additions. Portions were fantastic and the price was very fair. Pippo a Vernazza is a no frills spot, but you can expect some good pasta, I would definitely check them out them if you're in the mood for pasta.

We had their popular dishes of the pesto trofie and red sauce pasta with cod. Both pastas were delicious and very affordable with quick service. We enjoyed the pastas and the Aperol Spritz on their cute patio. This dinning experience was exactly what I was hoping for! A heads up is this restaurant is on the less busy side of town so it was slightly harder to find but well worth the walk.
