After our late arrival into Bergen we decided to eat some Norwegian fish dishes at Pingvinen…read more We arrived at the right time and got seated at the back table. Service was fairly quick. Menu contained a number of Norwegian dishes of seafood, meat (including reindeer) and vegetarian. We knew ahead of time we wanted to try the plukkfisk and gratinated fish pie. The pie was the best dish for us that night. It had a nice and creamy texture along with a crunch on the crust due to the frying. It was a light dish compared to the plukkfisk. The plukkfisk was quite heavy with this fish/mashed potato mixture and while the fried bacon added some texture it could've used a little more acid for our tastes.

They have free wifi and the password is at the bottom of one of the blackboard behind the bartender. Opted for the reindeer filet and it was excellent. The reindeer was cooked to a perfect medium and seared to perfection on the outside. The flavors were excellent and this was served with a side of fried potatoes, green beans along with a bed of creamy mushroom. The vibes from the Gen Z staff were lit too. Seems like they were complaining about bf issues... Pricing may be elevated as I'm not sure if this was a tourist trap as I didn't see any locals. 495 NOK for lunch.

However, the restaurant lived up to its hype. The restaurant is romantic and loaded with European ambiance. This is the kind of place where you know you aren't in Kansas anymore. Lamb is something that I love, so I was happy to see it on the menu. It was incredibly good. Not gamy at all, wonderful cooked, flavorful, and tender. It was fantastic. My wife and I split the huge portion of excellent potatoes au gratin that came with my lamb. It was creamy and tasty. Norwegians LOVE potatoes, so some sort of potato dish is a requirement, I think. My wife had a vegetarian hamburger that came with fries and veggies. She said that it lacked flavor, but it looked good. The fries were excellent.

I mean, I did, which is why after a day of traveling to Bergen from Oslo, I desperately needed sustenance and Bryggeloftet & Stuene was on my list and near my hotel. I walked in on a Tuesday night and no, I was denied. The place was packed, but the friendly hostess took my name down for a reservation for the following day. So that's what to do here. Make a reservation if you can't get in because everyone wants to eat here. The following day during my reserved time, it was a much more satisfying experience since I ate here! The restaurant is located just across the pier and along Bryggen, and inside, it's decorated with old paintings and photos of Bergen and Norway with classic, wood furnishings all around. It takes you back to Bergen's former days, which is the charm of this place. Staff could not have been friendlier. Bryggeloftet & Stuene has traditional, Norwegian food. I ordered the wolffish, which was in season, and the fish came with veggies and a side of potatoes to however you want them made. And this is when I learned that the area prepares potatoes dauphinoise, which is like au gratin and was sooo delicious. My dish comprised of fresh wolffish in a lemon, dill sauce, fresh vegetables and of course, with the side of dauphinoise potatoes. But this is the kind of restaurant that no matter what you order, everything will be delicious here. Ya gotta eat at Bryggeloftet & Stuene when in Bergen.

In fact I think our server was the owner, and he let us know that his wife was the cook (after we complimented our meals). Prices are very reasonable and there is a nice selection of fish and meat dishes. My husband and I shared the pork belly taco (appetizer) and the fish and chips plate. Our friend ordered the last available flank steak. Everything came out timely and was delicious! There was enough food to go around and no one left hungry. I'm really glad that our friend stumbled upon this restaurant. It was not crowded and had a lovely evening atmosphere for our last evening in town. It was walkable from our Airbnb and in a cute neighborhood. I would definitely recommend this place to others.

A few helpful hints: Ask the bartender for a menu, take a seat and then head back up to the bar to place your order. They have a pitcher of water at the end of the bar with glasses so no need to add an extra expense for bottled water. Remember on Sunday a bar or restaurant is the only spot you will get alcohol so don't think you can grab some beer at the Kiwi or Rema and drink at home/hotel. I got the herring with lingonberries which sounded weird to me but after the first bite I was sold!! I cleaned the whole plate with ease because it was so good. The prices are affordable compared to other spots in Norway so assure you go downstairs because the menu and prices are different.

And for this reason, we ended up at the lovely Baroniet Rosendal Cafe on a recent weekend trip. On the lush grounds of Baroniet Rosendal, a historic estate and manor situated in Kvinnherad in Hordaland county, Norway dating back to the 1660's. There is a small entrance fee to the grounds and gardens that will allow you access to the cafe, it is worth it. We did not opt to tour the estate, but it is a very nice site from the outside, regardless. We found ourselves enjoying gorgeous plates of salmon, sausage, salads and a bottle of rosé along with many other revelers. There is a converted greenhouse with dining tables as well as indoor at the cafe and a covered middle. The cover comes in handy as Norway is known for its vast amount of rain showers, and even though it was raining during our lunch it was wonderful none the less. The service was friendly and efficient. You order and pay at the counter and then your hot meals are brought to your table. The menu is short, but robust and very high quality. My salmon plate was delicious and filling. The crowd is mainly tourists in hiking/touring gear, so the setting is very casual. However, you can dine in style with white tablecloths and proper stemware and plateware from which to enjoy your meal. Truly beautiful and remote setting. If you are in the area, it's a must.

Great decor - semi minimal but warm and cozy. I dig it. The goods: After eating random Icelandic cuisine for a few days, I was really looking for something light. I order the chicken salad and it was delicious! The greens were fresh, the check was tender, and the whole damn thing was full of flavour. The dressing was similar to a Caesar dressing, which appealed to me less but it was good nonetheless. I got some raspberry juice and that was a lovely treat. Great little spot to check out if you're in Bergen. Service: OK. Price point: All I know is that shit is expensive in Norway. Especially if, like me, you're coming from Canada. Our dollar generally sucks! That said, this didn't break the bank (I don't think... ).

The meatballs were tender, flavorful and the plum compote complimented the rich flavor of the lamb. If you find yourself in Norway and want to taste traditional foods, lutefisk and rakfisk are a couple to try. The lutefisk, cod preserved in lye that has been rehydrated, was delicious though much saltier than I've ever had. The rakfisk which is fermented trout, was tasty, creamy and well complimented by the onion and sour cream. The decor is gorgeous and the dining area was comfortable.
