Let me start this review by saying that it will have nothing to do with the cafe. You don't go to a freaking furniture store for the meatballs, and I always make sure I eat beforehand, as these ventures can never seem to take less than 2 hours.
I have been to roughly 4 different IKEAs, but this was the first in the NYC area. I took the free shuttle (Sats. and Suns.) and was delighted at the short commute - roughly 30 minutes! Free transport + savings of 5% = Best idea ever, right? Wrong. Really, really wrong. I may have saved about $100, but I lost my sanity, and for about a 20-minute window, my will to live.
If you know anything about IKEA's on a weekend, they are packed. This one, however, was average. I had several questions about the beds I was buying, cabinets, and tables, but whenever I needed someone, no one (and yes, I mean no one on the Showroom floor for 3 1/2 hours) was around. The only help was one person at each department's help counter, with about 8-13 people waiting in line, requiring at least 5-10 minutes each. Scoop out my eyeballs with a spoon!!! That line is not going to happen for my 1 minute clarification question. In every single IKEA I have been to, and during every single visit, there are yellow shirts everywhere to help... minimal wait time.
After my 3 1/2 hour decision making process, I finally have all items gathered, ready to put in an order for about 13 large items I could not carry. Mind you, this entire time I heard about 25 announcements saying something a long the lines of, "Can't fit it all in your vehicle? No worries! We can ship it! Just visit the Home Delivery Desk!" "Super... I'll get anything I can grab now..." Dish scrubbers, shower liners, etc. etc. With a HUGE load of tiny and large things alike, I check out and head to the Home Delivery desk to pay my $69 fee, as advertised. After waiting 50 MINUTES in line to service 4 people in front of me, I get to the counter and find out that "some of my items" cannot be shipped. WHAT? I take the subway. Are you freaking kidding me? I asked why, as in, "Why don't you people just put small items in a box and put an itemized list on the outside of the package like any real company?" I was told that the barcodes must always be accessible.
SO, as if the 50 minute wait, and false advertising of shipment of items, I was told there will be an EXTRA $40 fee since I cannot pull mattresses out of a bin myself. Seriously? When I explained to the woman (who, by the way, abandoned the line for 20 of those 50 minutes to work out a discrepancy and left us stranded) that Raj told me that I was not even able to pull the mattresses because they were "up in the air" (like on a plane?), she said I still had to pay the fee. I tried again, saying, "I'm not ALLOWED to get it. It's not available for me to bring to you. I still have to pay the fee?" Her response was, "Well ma'am, if you want to go pull these items out and bring them back, you won't be charged the fee." SERIOUSLY? What the *bleep*?! Am I to climb a ladder to fetch the two queen sized beds from the air, maybe shoot a quail for lunch since it's now been 5 hours since I walked in the door? I realized I was speaking to someone who must be speaking some odd, deranged form of English... so I just shut up and paid. Instead of yelling. Loudly.
Customer Service: 1 star, and that solely goes to Raj down near the As-is section, who was the only willing and available help. Policies were unclear.
Convenience: 2 stars, free shuttle, no help in any section and difficult to understand bedding systems as a first-time buyer; Many items say "See sales associate for location details" but the sign doesn't understand that they are all dead, and the remaining worker is helping all 1200 occupants at this time.
Loveable items: 4 stars. I just love the items at IKEA. Very functional, clever, and thought-out. Thus, why i return.
I asked some stock man if this place was short staffed. "No. Not that I know of." NEVER AGAIN. Good luck, and best wishes. Pray for me as I spend 70+ hours putting together my furniture. read more
