It does get to be a bit of a squeeze in there at times though. On their walls are their chalked up specials and paintings for sale borrowed from the People's Gallery across the road. This cafe is perfect for traditional English breakfast and lunches like paninis, baked potatoes, soups with specials like lasagne and chilli con carne all under £5. They also provide a takeaway service which is pretty popular at lunchtimes.

We couldn't have lucked out on a better day, the sun was out in full force, and the trains were relatively peaceful (at first) considering it was Bank Holiday weekend. I'd read ahead and found out that they do a bit of grub, but if you're in the business of a massive lunch don't count on it. We spotted they had a number of hand made pies on offer, but besides mushy peas, nothing else comes with. I'd hoped for chips, but no joy! The service at the bar is sound enough, not overly friendly I'd say (perhaps as we were obviously not local and known) but certainly was friendly enough. I had the Moonraker Mild by Empire Brewing, which was decent and well kept, and set me up well enough alongside the pie. They come out really quickly, which is perfect if you're hungry, and have lashings of gravy and peas - a solid sturdy choice, tasty, but not amazing. However, at something like a fiver ish for both, who's complaining? Not me. There's a bit of a 'garden' out the back, more of a concrete area to drink and smoke, but the conservatory leading there is a gorgeous room. It's an oddly laid out bar, but I love the rustic décor and odd bits of railway signage you get in these places. I guess, with any station bar, there's an air of transience about it - it's hard to get a homely feel when you know a lot of custom will come and go - but you can't fault the bar for it really. It's a fine place to sup a pint, and I recommend it on the trail. At this point it was buzzing but not busy, so perhaps around 3pm is the ideal time for an initial pint!

The toppings were dry and just thrown onto the potato, the cheese tasted funny and the potato didn't even taste hot all the way through, the side salad which was "garnished" had no flavour. I also found the staff to be rude and unhelpful, I watched a waitress clean a table and just say "You done?" - Incredibly informal and rather rude for dealing with paying customers at high-end prices, has she even heard of an auxiliary verb? When I asked about gluten-free options, the only man who was working replied "not much", he seemed to be trying to get away as soon as possible without trying to deliver me something safe to eat. High-end prices for low-quality food and sub-par service, a real let-down. It also left my friend feeling rather ill after eating the same meal as me, luckily I didn't end up eating more than a few bites of mine before heading into Ashton Moss.

Instead the walls are filled with black and white photos of a bygone Levenshulme and interspersed with African masks and wooden ornaments. The tables don't quite match but they're clean and well tended by friendly staff. Along one side of the room there's a breakfast bar with modern, shiny stools. It's strange how they don't clash with the old fashioned glass fridge over in the corner but somehow it all seems to work. Even the flowers are a quirky mixture of those long curly stems and carnations. Pop in for a slap up weekend breakfast or a quick lunch. The food is good, the portions generous and the prices fair.
