My family ritually…read moretakes over half the small space for brunch and a 'natter' and the staff are very accommodating with prams and walking sticks and extra people. One half of the small building (by the river as the name suggests, but not overlooking it) is their kitchen, the rest light and airy with about six or seven round tables perfect for families and groups. It does get to be a bit of a squeeze in there at times though. On their walls are their chalked up specials and paintings for sale borrowed from the People's Gallery across the road. This cafe is perfect for traditional English breakfast and lunches like paninis, baked potatoes, soups with specials like lasagne and chilli con carne all under £5. They also provide a takeaway service which is pretty popular at lunchtimes.

It is nice to come here if you are waiting for the next train and want something warm to eat. Or even just a good old gossip with your mate. Either way they are accommodating. They help local businesses too by providing takeouts. The place is small but then again it is not meant to be a massive cafe. It is small and quaint to fit in with the town. The river Tame flows right next to it. It is pretty and has photos of the local areas on the walls.

Run by Manchester City Council's Markets New Smithfield…read moreMarket is the largest wholesale market in the North West of England occupying a 35 acre site just 2.5 miles from Manchester City Centre (in Openshaw). Want cheap Fruit, Veg & Meats. Well here at New Smithfield Market is where you want to go. If you buy your fruit or veg from a greengrocer or meat/fish from a Butcher/Fish Monger then beat them to the punch and buy it from here before they do. Yes most local companies will normally buy from here. Most of the action is based in C/D Hallway and the Fish Market. It does look like it is still stuck in 70's and could do with a rejuvenation (unfortunately the market lost a £30m grant to redevelop it due to the cuts)

Its difficult to comment on Manchester Markets as a whole as they cover such a large area of the…read morecity and sell so many different things. From handmade jewellery to homemade soup, the Manchester Markets have so much to offer if you know where (and when) to look. My top three are the Food Market, The Plant and Flower Market and the Fashion Market (for full details and all of the other markets check out the Manchester Markets website). The farmer's Market is easy to stumble across as it is held bi-weekly in Piccadilly Gardens. There is a mix of locally sourced and continental produce for you to try (I tend to make my way along the cheese stand and take advantage of their free testers). I'd highly recommend the Savin Hill Farm butchers stall which sells fresh meats from their traditional, ethical farm. There is a lovely little soup stand which always has something warm and tasty, and definitely pop over to Trevor Duerden's fine fudges for a treat (their gift boxes also make great presents). The Food Market is held twice monthly, on the second and fourth weekend (Friday and Saturday) of each month between 10am and 6pm. The Flower and Plant Market often accompanies the Food Market and has some really interesting things on offer for anyone green fingered. From a fresh cut bouquet of roses to an ancient Bonsai Tree, there is something here for nearly everyone. The market is held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, opening between 10am and 6pm. The Fashion Market is held on Tib Street (just off Piccadilly) every Saturday. The stalls comprise of local shops and boutiques (like Rags to Bitches) as well as independent designers and jewellers. There is always something new to look at here, and plenty of bargains on offer if you're willing to haggle. I'd recommend deciding how much money you want to spend in a day and not taking any more with you or it will disappear before your eyes. Not as cheap as more traditional markets (such as the Longsight Market), Tib Street's Fashion Market is focused on quality over quantity and is worth every penny.

The outside seating area seemed to be never cleaned, through the time I was there and when I passed again, over an hour later, they had never cleaned any of the outside tables as the cups stacked up, along with multiple people smoking which caused an unpleasant smell and continued to make a mess of a table, despite being located in the outdoor area of a shopping centre, and many families and young children passing, the staff didn't seem willing to do anything about it - Ridiculous! The inside wasn't much of an improvement. This Costa Coffee branch seemed to sum up every hospitality venue I visited during my day in Ashton, staff not seeming to care and an overall poor beverage and experience. A real shame gave this is the only chain coffee-shop I spotted in the town centre.

Although it has brought with it some tough competition with other Coffee bars which are all situated a few steps from each other. So in this case I think it would have been a bit better if maybe it was located somewhere else. But the coffee is good and strong too which is my ideal coffee. They do cakes, sandwiches and other stuff. So all in all, it is a good cafe.

The guy who runs this place (chef?) looked dirty and unkept in a black t-shirt and dirty trousers his son? who also works there was unbelievably dumb when I asked him directions to Stockport, well dumb or purposely unhelpfull, I dont know. To be honest the establishment is in a very run down area and maybe the patrons are used to cheap frozen and tinned food, but i certainly will not be returning, not even for a Mighty Bad Breakfast.
