So after blowing away the cobwebs on a chilly walk along the byways of Saddleworth, soaking in the views of the valleys and reservoirs, we completed the loop and were back at The Rams Head Inn for a much-needed Sunday feast. With two nippers in tow we opted for the side seating area away from the main dining room, which meant we were nicely self-contained and also fellow diners didn't have to endure 'toddler carnage'! You can select from their main menu here, as well as their bar menu. Not wanting to pass up on the chance to try a full meal I decided on wild boar & apple terrine for starter and lamb shank for mains - both were terrific; there was a generous portion of terrine and the lamb sloughed off the bone thanks to its cooking for 24 hours. If I see lemon meringue on any menu I'm compelled to order it and so it was done. Gorgeous it was too, more so with lashings of cream (I was telling myself I needed to replenish all those calories lost climbing over walls and ascending gravelled tracks...). For lighter dishes the bar menu certainly had some tempting options; ones I'll try when we come back again. Luckily a friend recently recommended the Rams Head which has a nice moderate 3 mile walk that starts from from the back of the pub- win win! Anyway, enough of that exercise malarkey and onto the food! The Rams Head offers both a main menu for their dining room and a more casual lounge menu which was can be taken in their snug type room, complete with cosy wood burning stove. As we planned on our walk afterwards (and the winter sun was getting lower in the sky) we opted for the lounge menu which has an array of hot and cold sandwiches and 'something different' items such as game terrine and locally reared pork pies. Not being able to choose, my husband and I decided to order a hot beef and gravy sandwich and a slow roasted pork with stuffing, apple sauce and gravy sandwich to share. It's all pretty casual and so you order at the bar at which point my husband was persuaded to order a portion of the homemade chips as well. This turned out to be a brilliant decision as they were some of the best chips I've had in ages! When the sandwiches arrived they came in enormous white rolls with an equally good amount of filling and two little jugs of gravy for dipping and were absolutely delicious. You could tell the meat was really good quality (the menu advises on provenance) and the gravy that came with it was proper homemade gravy, as it should be. I can't comment on the boozy side of things as we opted for a cuppa each. This actually came served in a pot with Yorkshire's finest loose leaf and a generous pot of milk- always a bug bear of mine when they scrimp on the milk. They also have an onsite shop called The Pantry which sells locally raised meat, cheese and posh tea/biscuits etc, along with what looked to be a good selection of wine. The Pantry has a small number of tables if you prefer a cafe environment to eat in. This for me is a perfect country pub and I shall be returning here asap to try out the full menu. We used a voucher from the Vouchercloud iPhone app to get a good deal on the price (buy 1 burger, get second for £1). 2 burgers, upgraded with extra bacon, a side of chips and two cranberry juices came in at just under £20. We went for the limited edition Greek burger (lamb, feta cheese and tzatziki) and it was amazing, probably one of the most tastiest burgers i've ever had! Similar process, look at the menu, saunter up to the register, place your order, get your drinks, and saunter back to your table... without spilling your drinks. I ordered the Avocado and Bacon Burger and a side of chips. It didn't take too long before I received my order. The food looked good... the burger was ok. It was messy, but with none of the satisfaction that a good messy burger brings. The avocado looked a bit old, some dark brown bits that were not hidden by all of the mashing and tasted a bit old too. The bacon was more fatty bits than meaty bits and when you bite into a burger, it comes straight out of the bun, pulling the mashed avocado and other toppings out onto the plate and you are left with the entire piece of bacon dangling out of your mouth. The chips were a bit on the soggy side. It isn't the worst meal I have ever had, but it didn't quite hit the spot, just refueled me to go do more shopping.

The staff were hit and miss with some indifference (waiting for a an age for the bill and one of the main courses), some a bit scary (seemed angry when we asked for cutlery) and a bit of being friendly. They seemed to realise we were not that happy and as we finished up our own birthday surprise for the two birthday boys they brought out a cake with a candle which was kind. It doesn't make up for the fact that the food was simply not good. My pizza was dry and cheeseless - well nearly and others were rather tasteless. The starters were OK but just don't bother with a main.

I mainly came in to use the toilet and possibly get a drink before heading onto the tram, with services running quite infrequently in a wasted opportunity for what is actually a decent tram network - but that's a different story. The toilets were well hidden, the only toilet was a disabled toilet but the entrance through a heavy door with a slight bump and turning didn't appear to be too disabled friendly. The toilets were disgusting too - they not only smelled bad but it was blocked and by the looks of things it appeared to have been that way for a while. There were no staff on the shop floor, unlike some branches which seem to be moving forward in terms of technology they did appear to have more of a manned till here to order and pay, but that seemed to be poorly mismanaged and it felt like at an airport where everyone hounded the desk after a cancelled flight for example. There wasn't a great deal of seating - pretty much a typical McDonald's, a mess in terms of how the store looked and the service too. 1*

It is very busy due to its location but it handles this situation quite well, as there always seems to be seating available on either floor. For a McDonalds, it is decent. Including the 3 amuse bouche and palette cleanser, there was not a weak dish. Innovative and perfectly balanced. Fusion between Nordic and Asian styles works amazingly well with the freshest ingredients enhanced by Koji, Ponzu and XO sauces amongst others. Good selection of wines. Service was knowledgeable, unassuming, polite and friendly. Chef Luke French is a genius and already a star who can stand shoulder to shoulder alongside Rogan, Blumenthal, Robuchon, Gagnaire and Ducasse. I'll be surprised if Sheffield doesn't have a Michelin starred restaurant by this time next year...Can't wait to go back!
