Five Guys - Meadowhall now has a Five Guys!!!

Meadowhall has a Five Guys! I have been lamenting over some of the places I liked in Manchester,…read moreso this discovery was very welcome. In fact, the first time we saw the Five Guys, they were still training staff, so it was closed. However, now when I say to Mr. Snarky, "Can we go to Meadowhall?" He is quite happy to make the trek as long as he gets Five Guys for lunch. While the set up is a bit nicer than some... with a logical flow of traffic from placing your order to getting drinks at the end, it is a bit smaller. By smaller I mean, not much room to wait for your order and not as much in the seating area. Although the one part that doesn't quite flow is where they chose to place the area that you pick up milkshakes. It is between the tills and where you pick up orders and it seemed to be confusing everyone... not to mention causing a bit of a traffic jam in the flow of people moving from placing their orders to waiting for them. Because this is a bit smaller with fewer seats, we managed to grab seats across from Five Guys on some bar stools, but finding seating on a weekend at lunchtime is like finding a needle in a haystack. I know that's not really Five Guys' fault though. You do have to listen closely for your order number as it can be quite difficult to hear with the loud music and the noise from the food court. Food was good as always, although the burgers were a bit on the sloppy side... but then again they had only been open for two weeks by the time we went.

I've been to Frankie & Benny's in Doncaster a couple of times and it has been great, so myself and my friend Ana went for lunch here. Initially when we arrived it was pretty busy, so we were given a device which was to beep when there was a table available for the two of us - a great idea in my opinion instead of turning people away, and we went for a drink in Coal bar (about 30 metres away). We took advantage of the lunch offer and got a starter to share, two mains and a dessert to share, all of which came to about £10, but we also had drinks and milkshakes which brought the bill to £13.50 each. That was very reasonable, we had to leave half of the dessert because I was stuffed to the brim! Great food - I had an amazing burger for mains, we shared garlic doughballs for starters and chocolate brownie with cream and ice cream for dessert. Also, as you know I like to mention staff, well done to the incredible waiter Arron (I assume this was his name as someone at the bar called him it) who served us quickly and with a smile, you definitely deserved our praise and tip! 5 star experience F&B's!

It wasn't busy, perhaps one third full and they had a pleasant, unpushy lady at the entrance tempting in passing trade. Once inside we waited at the desk for several minutes until we were scooped up by a passing waiter and offered a choice of seating (inside\outside) Service was slow but I did feel sorry for our waitress as there were obviously few staff on duty. I chose a steak wrap with fries and son chose fish fingers with fries. My steak wrap (tender strips of prime steak with red onion and peppers smothered in sauce) held a goodly amount of fat and sauce and a few bits of onion, lean meat and peppers. I'm told the fish fingers were nice. For desert we both chose fruit salad (because we care about out bodies) but there was good news and bad news. Good news the fruit was fresh. Bad news we knew this because there were still bits of pineapple skin in there. My son was a little put out because the menu assured him that he would get three fruits he likes and so he didn't mind giving away his kiwi but when his dish arrived there had been major substitutions made. We had opted for special deal meals but the price was still too high for the quality of food. As to portion size well, they wouldn't amuse a real New Yorker!

I hate to write bad reviews, but I can't let this pass…read more Coal bar has a nice atmosphere and friendly waitresses, but I was steeply ripped off. Myself and my friend Ana visited the bar while we were waiting for a table at Frankie & Benny's. We ordered a couple of drinks at the bar (my whisky and her rose wine) and I paid for it as we sat on the stools. I was shocked when I got the receipt - around £9 for two small drinks?! Upon further investigation, I had been charged for some kind of champagne for Ana's rose, which was £5.30 a glass without being told it was more expensive than the other wine that was advertised! The bartender then tried almost to pressure us into getting another drink when the device was clearly flashing (there was a great big F&B logo on it) by thrusting menus and cocktail menus at us. I can't speak for the food since we didn't eat there, but we definitely will not be returning.

The overall setting and interior is much nicer here than at giraffe, and you can really snuggle here and have a nice dinner experience. We were given the option of where to be seated by our waiter and plonked ourselves on a sofa ahhh!. After analysing the menu we chose a platter to share - fried whitebait, calamari and spicy pork meatballs - all of which were very nice and came with a selection of dips, however the meatballs were abit on the cold side though. I chose the mixed grill for my mains - rump steak, chicken and pork medallion - as I wanted abit of everything - and it came with chips and some salad. I opted for the additional Bearnaise and crushed chilli sauce, as I hadn't had it before and it sound appealing. I was extremely disappointed with my main, as all of my meats were overcooked - steak was medium (I asked for medium rare), chicken was stringy, although the pork was manageable. I couldn't taste the chilli in my sauce, and it was just creamy and nothing else. Bland bland bland bland bland bland. And bland. All in all, a nice place to eat, good service, but below par food. I was disappointed really, and I probably won't be going again. I find with these restaurant chains that they are only affordable and they lack real quality that independent restaurants have.
