Avoid this IHOP. I came in with my 4 hungry children expecting a quick, simple breakfast. Instead, we waited over an HOUR for basic eggs and pancakes while being served by Ayana. When I politely asked Ayana for an update on our food after waiting over an hour, her response was shocking: "What do you want me to do, go in the back and help cook? You're making me feel bad. This is not my fault." Wow. At no point was I blaming her personally. I simply wanted to know why my children had been sitting hungry for over an hour. Rather than showing empathy or professionalism, she became defensive and acted as though I was the problem for asking a reasonable question. What makes it even worse is that the restaurant was practically empty. There was no packed dining room, no line out the door, and no obvious reason for such an extreme delay. The kitchen clearly wasn't overwhelmed with customers, which made the wait even more frustrating and difficult to understand. When the food finally arrived, I asked to speak with the manager, Paul. He admitted that nobody should have to wait an hour for their meal and assured me I would receive a discount. After all that, the "discount" on a $66 bill was a laughable $5. If management truly believed the service was unacceptable, that discount certainly didn't reflect it. The entire establishment was poorly managed. The internet was also out so our order had to be repeated 3 times! We could hear employees yelling at each other from the kitchen and even threatening to beat each other up. Hearing staff argue and make threats while trying to eat with children is completely inappropriate and speaks volumes about the environment behind the scenes. The food was mediocre, the service was unprofessional, management offered little more than lip service, and the overall experience was one of the worst I've had. An hour wait for eggs and pancakes in an almost empty restaurant, a defensive response when asking about the delay, employees threatening each other in the kitchen, and a token $5 discount on a $66 bill. Came last night, oh wait we are not from the area..... and we are staying near by. While driving by the other day on Sunday my hubby noticed this restaurant is open 24hrs according to the sign outside. Keep in mind on line it states closed at 10:00pm Ok So yesterday we came in at 9:30pm and we were asked to leave because it was closed already lol. Ummm oooookkkk. Soo witch one is it??? However, this is a restaurant, and the expectation is that there is food here. We were seated promptly and put our order in quickly. An hour and 15 minutes later, we were finally served. I seriously wish there was a zero star. My family and I went in for breakfast. There was only a few people in this restaurant. It took about an hour and a half before we finally just walked out. We asked the waitress what was taking so long And she said she would check. She went back to the kitchen and said that they are cleaning and cooking at the same time. We continued to wait. We watched other tables get served that came in after we did. So the wait continued. And our waitress did not check on us or give us an update. We finally got up and told them we had to leave, we were starving. My best advice to you is don't go to this restaurant in Carlsbad, New Mexico. I believe they need to have a real good look at the management there. Another interesting caveat is the waitress was telling the people at the next table. I Hop was crowded and very short staffed they even put a sign on the front door stating there short staffed so please be patient. But Melody the manager and her staff held it down. Good ihop food. We visited this ihop on a Sunday night, after we found out the chilis had almost an hour wait. We hesitated to try this ihop, due to reading negative yelp reviews. The place only had ~4 or 5 other tables of customers. We were seated right away. They were out of the Kraft Mac & cheese my child wanted to order from the kids menu, but he ended up liking the happy face pancakes with a side of scrambled eggs, one piece of bacon and one piece of sausage. Adults ordered omelets. My husband realized they forgot to give him the sour cream and salsa that was supposed to come with his southwest omelet, but said it tasted good without it. Our food overall was good, with no major problems. The food arrived ~20 minutes after we ordered it. We would go to this ihop again next time we are in Carlsbad. read more

The smell, sight and sounds all chimed to the same tunes as early as I could remember with a bit of that festive, fall cinnamon and pumpkin kick. I've always liked the varied flavors of syrup but I could have sworn the pancakes were larger back in the day. The service was pleasant and I didn't have to wait much at all for my food, refills or service in general. BELIEVE the bad reviews! Our visit started out bad and went downhill from there. The hostess went to seat a single person and then disappeared for 5 minutes. When it was our turn, Kyler seated us in an area where there was no server. A couple that came in after us was seated across the aisle and they had to tell their waitress that WE still haven't been served so their waitress yells out, "Emma!" and goes to look for her. The neighboring waitress comes back a few minutes later and tells us that Emma is working a big party in back and "will be right here." Still no Emma. Meanwhile, Kyler comes back and offers to get us coffee. At least we have coffee. Then Robert comes over and tries to take our order, by hand, on a piece of printer paper, with a pencil. 2 minutes later Emma shows up and asks to take our order.... Then we wait. And wait. And wait. Emma stops by every 20 minutes or so and asks if she can get us anything. I tell her, "just our food." After 90 minutes go by, Emma repeats her mantra again, I reply again and she says she'll go check with the kitchen. Emma never returns. We leave $5 for the coffee and walk out. Robert and Kyler are leaning on the podium at the front and I tell them, "90 minutes and no food???" They just shrug like this is normal for this restaurant. If I had to guess, the restaurant has no manager and definitely no leadership. It's almost as if a handful of kids pooled their babysitter money and decided to start a restaurant without having any idea how to run a restaurant. I should have read the reviews before eating here. We were staying next-door, and, of course the hotel was serving children's food. We stopped at IHOP on the way to the Carlsbad cavern. The waitress was wonderful and working her butt off serving the entire restaurant by herself. We could hear the Cook shouting at her and he sounded like kind of a jerk. The food looked OK, though, the pancakes were barely warm The worst part of the meal was the digestive catastrophe that followed. It didn't hit me until I was about a quarter of the way through the Carlsbad caverns, which is supposed to take 45 minutes. I took my daughter and We emerged two hours later, as I had to stop frequently to pray for sweet death. It was in the 60s inside the caverns, however I sweated profusely the entire time. Several people asked me if I was OK. I wasn't. Two hours later I stumble to the surface. My parents had been preparing to send out a search party. All I really needed was a bathroom. There is a wonderful place called the Pecos River Grill just down the street. For the sake of your intestinal health please go there.
