Yummy drinks we got from the drink bar in the back! Horchata and passion fruit agua Fresca ~$5 for both
Christina D.

If you've lived around BR for a while, the ideal market on Sherwood has been a staple for a minute, but this one on Burbank has opened up in the last year or so. It's relatively closer to me so I've been here twice before. The first time was to pick up some tres leches dessert, which was so good! My most recent visit, which prompted this review was last weekend! I was a little overwhelmed stepping in because I'm not too familiar with Mexican ingredients/supermarkets but I easily found myself drawn in by all the pretty colors and liveliness. I got all the ingredients to make Birria tacos and they came out amazing and I had no trouble at all finding what I needed. The assistant manager at the drink bar was so friendly and offered us samples, which definitely got me hooked on the passion fruit drink. Overall, the ingredients to make about 20 Birria tacos (with plenty of leftover chilies, tortillas and cheese) was only $55! That's a steal IMO, I'll definitely be back.

Chicken stew and plantains!

We all know some of the best ethnic foods are not in the upscale side of town. I was given a very friendly welcome back and my husband was greeted like a friend as well. They have a great drink selection, so I encourage you to try something new. We were served the refried black beans and chips. I don't know what they do to these beans and I don't wanna know. Just keep'em coming!! My husband ordered a huge plate with all different meats, fried plantains and veggie salad. The steak and pork were beyond tender, and that flavor... wowww! It was like Honduran nachos, fried plantains covered in pico and aioli. Im sold! My dinner was equally delicious, more than I could eat. For two drinks, 2 huge dinners it was only $30, I'm sorry but no fancy restaurant can pull off that level of quality food, the amount of food for that price. Whether you're getting take out or dining in you'll feel welcomed. I can't wait to go back and try other items!

I wasn't looking for anything specific to eat but this place called to me so I whipped into the parking lot and headed in! This is such a homey type of place that puts a lot of pride and joy in their food and showing off Latin culture. Los Alvarez Exxpress Latin Food is a local mom and pop spot on the corner of Gardere and Burbank next to the S&P Food Store/Chevron gas station. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect going in but what I got was a lot of warmth and comfort. This is a place for Latin locals to relax and get a bit of familiarity and good food. I dined in and ordered the Granadas Catrachas. Catrachas are traditionally known as Honduran tostadas. Los Alvarez puts their spin on it by using Granada flour to create a puff pocket and stuff it with meat, rice and cheese and serve it with encurtido (Honduran pickled vegetables). I ordered one with chicken and one with beef. The serving was huge and absolutely delicious! I was only able to eat one. That, on top of the chips and salsa and black bean dip had me full for the rest of the day! Everyone that works there is friendly and for a second you don't feel like you're in Baton Rouge. This is a magical place.

They've shared the space with other food trucks, which has usually found business when next door Dorothy's (#1) has an influx of cars in the adjacent lot. It may pass itself off as a taco truck, but like many of the Latin businesses in the city, it's really a Honduran one. My first time coming here was a tough one. It was late afternoon and their platters had sold out for the day but they had still had number of meats (chorizo, barbacoa, chicharron) available for tacos. The subsequent result was an unmemorable output of tacos that I wouldn't care to get again. No salsas, limes, and additional condiments could save the meal. As always, shoot for their Honduran specialties. However, their platos tipicos plates are the real true sell. The early morning / lunch crowds will enjoy their carne asada plate, which is often paired with their rice and beans with a little cabbage salad topped with chimol. If not, the baleadas are usually a safe bet. I prefer mine "con todo" with eggs, meat, chicken, sausage, cheese, beans, and crema. There is no set schedule that I've been able to find in the last few years. They will appear and sometimes not be there at all. Social media has been sparse and like many trucks, the prices aren't listed on the menu. The service has been lukewarm at best and I would recommend going the takeout / eat in car route since the outdoor seating provided is limited and not weather proof. ___________ (#1) https://www.yelp.com/biz/dorothys-soul-food-kitchen-baton-rouge My photos: https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/antojitos-express-baton-rouge?userid=ysCBsXWPB-LAiewVS3jZfQ

I did suggest that many people enjoy margaritas at other competitors- he plans to include them very soon. I also suggested they might consider adding tres leches, or other common Mexican desserts. Sometimes people in the Seattle area will go have coffee and dessert- why not in Baton Rouge? Dulce Le Leche or Tres Leches would sell well... in my opinion. Hubby and I came for dinner on Friday, June 16,2017. We came because of the positive Yelp reviews . We were not disappointed in the menu, and the cook made queso sauce just for my husband , even though it was not on the menu. I ordered the tamales that came with arroz ( rice ) and delicious home made white beans that were perfectly seasoned. These beans were very good , and not the usual refried beans... Hubby ordered and enjoyed the Carne Asada dinner... his came with a roasted green chili pepper, tomatoes, lettuce , beans , rice and tortillas. He very much enjoyed his meal. You can ask for the imported Mexican Coca Cola .. it is slightly less sweet than American Coke.( in my opinion) We also tried the guacamole , the salsa and the chips... all yummy! This is a small grocery store in the front , with many Goya brand products etc. also , snack foods , soft drinks etc. This is not your usual Tex- Mex fare, and even though the only t v shows are in Espanol, if you enjoy authentic Mexican food at a great price , you will have to come to La Mexicana to see for yourself. I usually judge a Mexican restaurant by their guacamole- this is yummy and has pieces of onion , small pieces of tomato and is seasoned nicely . It isn't blended... but I'm sure it's made using a mortar and pestle( the best way to make fresh guacamole). My husband and I exited with smiles on our faces ... this is good food ! Muy Bien Amigos y amigas! I only wish we had discovered this place before now.

I stumbled upon this hidden gem while Yelping for a new lunch spot…read more El Magey succeeds at something that many buffet restaurants struggle with - the food tastes like it was prepared for a restaurant rather than simply produced for a steam table. Everything appeared and tasted like it was freshly prepared by staff who know how to cook. The enormous food selection this day included 2 soups, white and yellow queso's, a Mexican stew, pork tamales, chimichangas, chicken and pork fajitas, enchiladas, flautas, quesadillas, a taco bar, plantains, salads, fruit and several desserts including sopapillas. My favorite selection had to be the pork carnitas. They were seasoned, juicy and overall delicious. In my opinion, the overall variety is actually one of the establishments greatest strengths. Chips and salsa are free and house-made flour tortillas are available upon request. They even offer you a free cup of ice cream when bringing the check. Located on Siegen Lane, it offers a broad selection of Mexican and Latin American dishes, with the buffet supplemented by an à-la-carte menu. The restaurant currently lists hours beginning at 10:30 a.m., making it a particularly practical lunch destination. Next time you are craving great food with variety and at a reasonable price, I'd recommend giving El Magey a try! Stay safe out there and eat good food!! That said, there are several red meat options on the buffet --more beef than pork--which was a delightful surprise. Another surprise was that it was still have beef tongue as an option. Of course, you have your normal and customary south of the border offerings such as tacos, enchiladas, tamales , chilli releno (??) and stuff to make fajitas. There are 3-4 soups of differing varieties which I think are worth sampling all, especially on colder days and multiple dessert options which are good any season. The ambiance is of a working class place with good ol home food which all should enjoy and like and designed to make you feel good--I certainly felt good and comfortable. The workers were attentive to our table as well as to the buffet line to make sure we had all we wanted and that the trays on the serving line remained full. Bueno!
