Took 3 classes with Carlos. I never drove before so I was pretty anxious but he reassured me that it was nothing to panic over. He's super amicable, great at direction, and he made me feel really calm about driving. Based on my skills, he made me drive on the highway for our first lesson and i found it wasn't so scary after all! Great judge of skill. For my road test, Milton took me but one of his students accidentally took his insurance papers when she took back her permit (she was super rude on the phone and I felt so bad for him!) But he called another instructor to take the test with me and Hugo was awesome. Super funny dude. Everyone here is great from my experience. This is the worse driving school. All they care about is money and they're liars. Don't waste your time or money. I don't recommend them at all. The first time I did a driving lesson, they paired me with someone who does not speak English at all and they knew I did not speak Spanish. I recently made another appointment at 6pm for the same thing. They gave me an appointment for the next day, so once I got home which is 3 blocks away, I called multiple times at 6:30pm to reschedule because I felt sick immediately and no one picked up. I woke up and called multiple times at 9:00am and no one picked up. I called a different number and they told me to call the office and I told them no one was picking up. So they said they will tell them to call me. Once I reached them, the first lie they told me was they were calling me because they saw a missed call from me which is a lie, someone else told them to call me. I told them that I wanted to change the date for the next day because I was sick and in the hospital and they told me that I needed to call 24hrs ago and I told them that I made an appointment less than 24hrs ago and I call 30mins after I made an appointment and no one picked up and they said that they would have to charge me $50 for a late fee and no matter what. Then they said they close at 7pm and I told them I called before that and they said I did not call them because they were there and I got the call log to prove it. So I paid $90 for the service and now I have to pay $50 for a late fee, which is $140 down the drain. I asked for an accommodation and they did not want to. This is the worst experience I ever had. Unfortunately my experience with this school has not been pleasant. Right after I moved to the area I decided to invest into taking some driving lessons to improve my driving after many years of city living and not having to drive. I called in February to inquire about taking some driving lessons and was told that I can only pay for lessons in cash to the driver, $70/lesson. When I asked if I could pay with a credit card, the lady on the phone said that I needed to come in and pay for a package in their store front if I wanted to pay with a card. Fast forward to a few months later, I came in to their store front today and was told that it was impossible that I was ever quoted $70 and that their current rate is $85/lesson and they don't currently take students with a New York driving license. I don't mind paying the school's asking rate but I think there are nicer and more honest ways to treat people. So rude and disrespectful. read more

I would give this place 4 stars, perhaps even 5, but it started off rocky. We called in a couple weeks ago and the lady on the phone said they'd get back with us at the latest in a week. They took longer than expected. My first lesson was terrible to say the least. This one woman, who I've been given information that she's been working there for 15 years (surprised she's had the job for this long), was completely useless and wasted your time. 90% of the time she was on her phone and constantly pressed the brake pedal violently when the light turned yellow. Keep in mind that sometimes I was 10-15 feet away from the stoplight. I'm no expert in driving, but this is unideal to say the least. We also lost 20 minutes of our lesson after she told me to park so she "could talk to her daughter"??!?! So if the owners of the school are reading this, you're stuck with two decisions: fire her or give her an orientation once over to stop wasting both our time and more importantly our money. However, my 2nd lesson was excellent. Carlos was an excellent instructor and made the time pass by really fast. He's the only reason im not giving this place a lower rating. He taught parallel parking really well, told me how and when to stop, k turns, etc. Excellent instructor, I already recommended him to more of my friends. read more

Do not recommend. I went here a while ago but the lady I was with didn't bother to even teach. She had her foot on her passenger brake almost all the time. We went around doing her personal business and didn't bother to even teach me to park. Absolutely horrible place. I gave them another chance when I went for the motorcycle license and again a complete disappointment. The guy gave me scooter and told me to practice around the cones while he went into a truck and began to teach that person Instead. I was left alone for 2 hours and since I wanted to learn I just did the practice around the cones and taught myself. Don't waste your money more importantly don't waste your time. read more

My son had a great experience with Ideal. Yes, you have to go to the office to arrange the lessons and paperwork. That takes a little patience. They are busy and you just have to go through the process. The lessons do cost money, but they are completely worth the investment. All 3 of the instructors my son had were awesome and each taught him something useful. He took 7 lessons and they brought him to his driving test in Lodi. He passed the first time! This could not have happened without Ideal. Make sure your paperwork is in order - especially on the day you/your child goes to Lodi. Highly recommended. read more

Ideal Union City Location: I've never dealt with such an unorganized set of people in my life. I do NOT recommend using Ideal Driving School at all. The schedulers suck, they tell you one time, then call you the day of your lesson and change the time. My one class I had, the instructor was late, and on top of that, he fell asleep while he was giving me the lesson, and he barely spoke English. My husband recommended me to this school as he has a great experience with Hugo. I asked for Hugo and they told me he wasn't available. Today, I was scheduled for a 5pm class, they called to confirm 4pm. They are HORRIBLE! I cancelled my class and will go somewhere else. Do not waste your time or money on this school. read more

Short: This was my first experience driving, and I would never come to this place again. Long: I found the process of booking an appointment simple. I arrived at the place, paid for two hours of instruction, they would pick me up at my home that afternoon. I was picked up right on time. In the drivers seat was a student and in the passenger seat was the instructor. The instructor, whose name I didn't catch (older hispanic lady), informed me that the student was going to be dropped off and then we could begin. I thought to myself, I hope I am going to be compensated for this time! The student drove up the street to Kennedy Blvd., and the instructor told me to get in the drivers seat. I got in the drivers seat, the student went to the back seat. The instructor told me how to adjust my mirrors, how to signal, etc. I told her I've never driven before! I thought my first time driving would be relaxed, in a nice parking lot -- not on Kennedy Blvd. at 4 pm! If you unfamiliar with the North Bergen area, this is rush hour! Nevertheless, she told me to drive, and I did. I was extremely nervous, I had to get a feel for the gas and brake, turning, all on a busy road! The instructor had me drop off the other student. I feel like this is unprofessional, she should have dropped the student off beforehand instead of having me do it. But the MOST unprofessional part? She had me drive in someone's driveway, went to their house, to use the bathroom. I had assumed this house was hers so I just waited for her to finish doing her business. A man pulls up behind me, and yells at me for parking in his driveway, and tells me he's sick of "you people (referring to the driving school)" parking in his driveway. I told him I had no idea, I was just following my instructor. He goes back in his car, waiting for me to pull over. I've never pulled over/reversed in my life so I just sat there and waited for my instructor to finish using the bathroom. She finally appears, the guy starts yelling at her, she comes in the car and quickly tells me to reverse. I had like 3 people watching me do this, obviously upset I was parked in their drive way. I had so much anxiety, mind you this was all within the FIRST 20 MINUTES of me driving for the first time ever! After that, the ride was much more calming. I didn't really find her to be a good instructor overall -- she did give me some good tips, but at the same time I also feel like she just threw me in a car and said "drive." Also, although I am hispanic, I barely know any Spanish. I told her 3 times I don't know any Spanish, and she kept telling me things in Spanish... it's very hard to receive instruction when you have no idea what the person is saying. She also made me stop at a Popeyes to give some guy money. Why? I am paying $35 an hour and I was barely compensated for running HER errands. Anyways, that was my experience. The IDEAL driving school company is a company that does not act correctly. I went to get my CDL for a large school bus, you have to understand that not all companies offer this service. I would give this place zero stars if I could. Sadly, I didn't read the yelp reviews before scheduling my class here. Else I would have known better. First of all, you will have a bloody hard time getting some on the phone to book your appointment. I told them i was new to driving and would like a patient instructor. What they sent me, was a joke. This lady was so rude! The worst 2 hours of my life. I couldn't believe I was paying to be tortured this way! She kept shouting at me for hitting the break to hard, and not driving too fast. Cut me some slack here lady, it is my first time behind the wheel! And then she would make me stop to go pee, and she would be on the phone yapping away. Like that was any help! But I realised it was better if she was on the phone, because then she wouldn't yell at me. HAH! And if I asked her something, I was "talking back" to her. I was so happy to get done with those two hours. She wasnt interested in teaching. She would get out of the car and go talk to other instructors that we came across while practicing parking. Do not use this driving school. They are rude on the phone. Booked a one hour lesson for driving test and told Charlie I would meet the driver at the DMV when driving test was finished. The student told driver twice that parent would be meeting at the DMV. Teacher left dmv with student and drove back home (30 minutes + traffic). I waisted my morning driving to dmv and back and all Ideal driving school could say was you owe a balance. Paid balance on the phone and asked the owner to call me today. NO return phone call. The teacher also detoured home to pick up a new driver with my teenager in the car on the way home from. the DMV - this new driver got in the driving seat and drove my teenager home. Not exactly a safe idea for my teen to be in the backseat with a new driver learning how to drive. All this for $130. Lots of other driving schools in town - don't use Ideal. read more

One of the teachers really needs to be fired- her name is STEPHANIE. We were in the highway, there were no cars so I went to change the lane and she PRESSED THE BREAKS IN THE HIGHWAY JUST BECAUSE SHE DID NOT GIVE ME "PERMISSION". When I asked what her name is near the end of the lesson SHE GAVE ME A FAKE NAME! I took the 3 lesson package with this school. I had two teachers, Carlos and another I cannot remember his name, both were amazing. And on my last lesson I had this person (STEPHANIE), she first of all came in 30 minutes late. I told her in the beginning I wanted more highway practice. But out of the 1 hour 45 minutes I drove only about 20 to 30 minutes in the highway. She tells me fifteen minutes into our lesson to NOT CHANGE LANE WITHOUT HER PERMISSION! WTF. I already have a New York State license! She kept on breaking and taking my wheels so constantly. She wouldn't talk or explain my mistake, she would just break even though I'm already breaking. I know I'm not the problem because I drove all on my own and beautifully with the other instructors. But she kept on breaking in unnecessary situations. After the highway we were in local street and she tells me to change to the right lane. I do but it clearly states that this lane is for turning only and we were going straight. Cars start to honk and she try's to put the fault on me. I tell her "you told me to do so" as it was clear if I didn't do her wishes she would press the break, but she yells out she didn't make me do anything -WHY ARE YOU A TEACHER AND YELLING!? On top of that, when the lesson time ended we didn't make it to my house and she tell me to sit in the back and that now SHE HAS TO PICK 3 STUDENTS BEFORE SHE CAN DROP ME HOME. SHE DID NOT TELL ME THIS BEFORE. We could've easily made it to my house but she chose to make me drive near the student's she needs to pick up. I told her I have work after this and I'll be late SHE SAYS IT's NOT HER PROBLEM. This place is beyond horrible!! Waste of money and time honestly, there beyond unprofessional. I spent $420! On a "package " for 6 hours. When I had my first lesson I was told that each lessons was cut to only 1 hour and 45 minutes, my second lesson I got a women which was beyond unprofessional she was on her phone yapping away and barley instructing she then proceeded to make me drive her to get pizza as to she was hungry... my third day she picked me up with another student and made me drive to leave them at their house then proceeded to tell me to drive to the car wash I was confused as to why we were going to the car wash because it was my time to learn to drive what she was paid to do. We spent about 20 mins there THEN we went on to my driving so not only did they take 15 mins from my lesson on top of that they took 20 unbelievable. Every time I would be driving .. she continued to keep pressing the breaks on her side to the point where I would be stuck at a green like because she wouldint be looking at the road and she had her foot on the break. Wasted a week of my life. They promised they would show up in a week, we set the date. They cancelled, didn't t offer a make up lesson, I had to chase THEM around by phone. At one point some random instructor called me to tell me I should call the office to figure out what was going on. They took absolutely no responsibility. Even when I asked them to refund me they took zero action, I just got handed from one person to the next, put on hold, sometimes no one even answered they just pick up and you hear them, chatting in the background. This is all because I wanted to try one lesson before buying the whole $500 package. They literally kept telling me that they had to prioritize those people. That is why I agreed to wait a week in the first place and that is why they canceled my first lesson the day of. read more

I calculate around 25 or more minutes wasted in her talking and peeing... Second class she come 15 minutes late with another student driving, she say to drive to the school office to drop him. when we arrive she say park the car lets go in the office so u make a 3rd appointment. when the secretary finish with the other before me we talked when could it be the date but i was busy the days available I said I'll call next week, then I turn to the "teacher" and said this 25 minutes don't count in my 2 hours right? she said of course shes teaching me how to make an appointment.............. really... well she told me drive into route 3 and go to a town to drop some Avons products and chat with her client. when we come back she say get under the tunnel heading to Lincoln tunnel, at 5 pm eve I know there is traffic, well we spent 30 minutes jammed moving a inch per inch. The owner is more detailed in teaching drivers but other instructors are not as attentive or insightful or experienced at all. The one star is for him, if you able to schedule him as an instructor instead of the new ones. One instructor had only gotten his license 3 mo. ago. Upon taking my CDL exam for school bus I did not pass because I was never informed by instructor certain procedures by my instructor! Also many times during practice I was the only one on the bus while the instructors socialized. I was not the only many other students from this school did not pass their trucking licenses either! Getting all the hours of instruction you paid for is also extremely difficult once you have already paid. Speaking with the office assistant was not pleasant as she was not willing to schedule my final hour of instruction explaining that I had none left although I had a whole hour left! She failed to teach my sister anything or help her out or give her heads up on how the test is and what she should know. My sister knows how to drive but a little heads up would be also good too. I had one class with one of the instructors and ended up so stressed that almost gave up on driving. Required all my patience and strength to stay calmed and not lose my composure. This instructor (let's pretend I don't remember the name) he was rude, had no issues making comments about how "stupid" was my neighbor because he was walking his dog in what it looked like pajama pants. Asked me to drive slowly next to people riding their bikes and BARKED at them!!!. Made remarks about my accent and some other behavior that I'm pretty sure is not acceptable or at least expected when you pay to be taught. When we picked up the next student he would slap her hand to correct how she hold the steering wheel and I guess that because she was young she never said a word. When it comes to parking, the only time I had the opportunity to practice parking was in front of his office and he was basically in control of the car the whole time. He never gave any pointers on how to do it or what keep in mind to do it properly. This is the first time that I make a review, not because I want this person to lose his job, but because I think that the first thing a company must offer is educated and polite instructors. When I saw the comments of teachers eating in the car I was like ok that a little too extreme and BS but when I took my 2 hours lesson that's exactly what happened. My problems were as follow: #1 She shows up 15 MNS late. # 2 as a FIRST TIME DRIVER as soon as I pulled up she was on the phone. So her being 15 MNS late +7 MNS picking up food+ 10 MNS early lesson my "2 hours" was more like 1 1/2hours. I didn't get her name but she's horrible! read more

Surprised at the reviews. I started at ideal 03/2022 and got my license 04/07/22. The instructors always picked me up on time and I got my full hours I paid for (Saturday's mind you.) I had no issues and felt comfortable driving with the two women I had. The drop off/pickup is great learning experience since it lets you navigate locally. Some people have 0 driving experience and should practice in a lot before going to a driving school. Driving school is per session and if you have 0 experience you're going to be spending a lot of time and money to learn how to drive down the street. I always had my phone calls answered and enjoyed that I got my moneys worth, at the end I just wanted my license and some practice in my community. I purchased a 6 hour package plus road test. I haven't practiced driving in years and it was easy to do this because I was driving when I lived in Cali. Overall enjoyed my experience and would do it all over again. read more

My daughter was just kept waiting almost a half hour for her first driving lesson before it occurred to the teacher, Maria, to call her to say she was stuck at the DMV. The lesson was rescheduled for an hour later. Trouble is, the person going in Maria's place, Oscar, was 25 minutes late for my son's driving lesson a few days ago. When I tried to call Ideal to find out why my daughter's driving teacher still hadn't showed, I was put on hold multiple times for very long holds before getting a chance to even tell them why I was calling.
