As we prepared for the drive back to Mendon my wife's cousin recommended stopping at the "Chevron Station" just east of the town of Bear Lake as you enter the quaint hamlet. He said their hand-scooped fresh fruit shakes are incredible. Maybe. As we exited Bear Lake the Chevron station is truly the LAST business on the left (or the first if you're just coming into town). Shake (pun intended) your franchise/national chain notions and ideas of shakes. NO soft-serve here. Hand-scooped ice cream, vanilla of course, with the flavor of your choice added. Fruits are fresh local grow, malt (!) is available on request. One size only, sir. We ordered a chocolate malt (I could not resist the memories of my youth in the '50s when every shake was hand-scooped), a raspberry shake, and a strawberry shake. Thank goodness we also bought a couple bottles of water. These ice cold creamy milk/egg/sugar/vanilla/flavors-added concoctions were to die for. Certainly the best I have enjoyed since Farrell's Old Fashioned crashed following a short revival. If you are in Bear Lake, DO visit the "Shake Place inside the Chevron Station". Legit delicious pizza, charming outdoor seating and even open on Sundays! It's worth the drive across the border from Utah to Idaho for a pie. There are several standard pizza places in Garden City and Glady's is heads and shoulders over any other pizza. My only complaint is that it's becoming so popular that they need to hire more help! They placed a giant advertising sign out in the middle of the yellow striped area of the parking lot that is for wheelchair loading and unloading. Also for ALL customers to have a clutter free entrance and exit to the store. When my hubby moved the sign onto the sidewalk up next to the building. The night manager ran out and tried to put it back!! Hubby said "that's against the law. You can't put anything there." Red haired manager - "Corporate told us to put it there!" Every other Maverik I've been to lately has the same sign. But always up against the building near the chopped fire wood or the bagged ice freezer. This is the only store who thought corporate told them to violate ADA laws, then had the nerve to yell at a customer trying to help them be more compliant with laws. Having this walkway clear provides easy access to their building for EVERY customer. I mean who wants to trip over a giant sign trying to get in or out the front door? Want something better to do with your time than running out and trying to put giant signs back into spots where it's against the law? Try wiping down your sticky counters.
