*UPDATE* After writing the review below and a more trips to…read moreKampachi, we realized we only had these issues when we had one specific waitress. It got to the point that we would call ahead of time and ask if she was working, and if so, we'd go somewhere else. After a few more weeks it seemed like she was no longer employeed there and since then we haven't had any issues with the food or service. Kampachi is definitely are favorite restaurant in the Thibodaux/Houma area. *ORIGINAL* We've been to Kampachi a few times and enjoyed the food although with a simple improvement, the food could be really really good. My problem comes in the service. Once the food is prepared, it sits at the sushi counter until the waitress finally notices it's ready and decides to bring it to the table. There doesn't seem to be anyone expediting or letting the waitstaff know the order is ready. It's not unusual for our crab salad, rolls and fried foods to sit, slowly dying, on the sushi counter for over 10 minutes while our waitress meanders around the restaurant. If the restaurant is busy, I could understand, but at times we were 1 of 3 couples in the entire place and our food just sat there. Getting a timely drink refill is also rare, even when we can see our waitress standing around doing nothing. With a simple improvement in service, they can become the best sushi place in the area.

Fed 4 people with apps, soups, salads and specialty rolls. all sub a Benjamin. And we had togo boxes! They give fried wontons and sauce when you sit. Went through them faster than EL Taco shop chips and salsa. They were definitely a huge hit with everyone. We had a Bento Box that was filled with yummy tempura veggies and the specialty rolls were delicious. I had the Cowboy roll and they added masago (sp) and crunchies to it for me. The server overheard us talking about being her birthday and the owner brought out a plate of sweet treats for desert. Definitely worth coming back!

Fish and other raw food is kept at room temperature which isn't always a welcoming notion. This was my fifth visit. Four of five visits had screaming infants and children's YouTube videos blaring in the background. NOT a restaurant for peace and quiet. When ordering a roll, I was offered the choice of soy or seaweed wrap. I opted for soy and my roll arrived a couple minutes later. The sushi itself wasn't bad, but again the bombardment of an infant screaming and YouTube programming really detracted from the experience. I'm uncertain as to why some parents believe their three month old would benefit from a raw fish experience. Unfortunately come time to pay, I noticed a little extra than advertised on my bill - an up charge for soy paper. Now small amounts aren't normally a big concern - provided the customer is notified of an upcharge fee when ordering. Not only was I not told, but it's not mentioned anywhere on the menu. When I inquired about it, my server was kind enough to take it off the bill. However, he then proceeded to argue that "generally people just should know that it costs more" and "nobody really says anything". Look - it's a matter of principle. The cost of doing business is what it is. But TELL people you're going to charge them extra. DON'T sneak it on to the bill and assume everyone knows. That's a shady nickel-and-diming tactic that will eventually get noticed. And don't try to defend it when you're caught red handed.

My brother tagged along, and upon arriving, it was not very busy for what was a Tuesday night. Our waitress was kind but rushed us just a little bit. I ordered a Hawaiian roll and vegetable fried rice. The Hawaiian role was great, but I wish the pieces were smaller (and maybe they could provide 12 smaller pieces instead of 10 big ones). It's still my favorite roll on the menu regardless, and I order it basically every time I go. The vegetable fried rice, on the other hand, is the best I've ever had! That's literally no exaggeration. Living in Dallas, the only fried rice that comes close is from Hibiki (which is amazing) and even then their fried rice is not quite as good as Ichiban. Who knew small-town fried rice would be hittin? To end off the meal, we had mochi ice cream (which my brother wanted). Although I don't eat that often, I did enjoy it as an infrequent dessert. To go off topic, the food is actually pretty cheap. If I remember correctly, my fried rice was less than $12 which is amazing because the portion size is a meal and was leftovers for me in my case! Overall, this is a place I will definitely return to when I go back to Louisiana! Ichiban has been a favorite of mine (and my mom's) growing up, and I'm so glad to see that their food still has the same delicious taste from 2010 when I lived there. If you are ever in the area, please check it out!
